The solo race is amazingly easy to win, it's certainly no harder than the Floater courses for the Summer event. Sprint on the Straight aways, jump when you get to a corner to stop moving, turn in the new direction and rinse/repeat.

I used to struggle with it... until I learned the wonders of jumping (thanks to a vorlon inside my head).

Ya he is the best. But it's Q Junior that runs the Winter Wonderland.

A bit mixed, but overall positive.

I wish there was more ice skating options or content. It can be just fun driving your rounds across the frozen lake.

I like the ice skating and acrobatics/making figures on the ice. While i'm there i might as well get rid of some borg snowmen and pick up the event ship.

Never cared for the ice race.

The best way to earn the ship for the Winter Event, and I all I get is disqualifications, attacks by wandering that make me fall or I avoid all that and not reach the finish line in time to win. I'll pass.
  • echattyechatty Member Posts: 5,918 Arc User
I've never done the race for the ship, don't want or need it. But I do have a lot of fun with the other stuff there is to do, mostly battling snowmen in some form or another. I really enjoy that. Looking forward to the new game with the Snowconians too. Will have to dust off my snowball shooters and turrets and mortars.

I don't even do F&F either. I just go to relax and have a good time on the ice, stuff my face and stuff snowmen.
Now a LTS and loving it.

    It returns. Wonderful.
DPS-Bronze, DPS-Silver, DPS-Gold, etc. are FAKE! They were created by an outvoted minority who destroyed the original DPS channels!

Tactical Team sucked, once upon a time. I got it buffed. Don't think for a minute that Cryptic ignores forum feedback.

Huh - when i start race i'm untargetable by anything - players, NPCs, snowborgs or whatever....
Of course - i first learned to roll on corners, then setup special key for rolling.

Now the only problem i got with race is when someone tries to cut before me in queue, and the game bugs and disqualifies me (cause it can teleport that someone on start line, when it already count me in race and i'm out of track...)

The rewards are great (the ships of course are the best).

Last year was problem with bugs, but that was propably cause it was itroduction of account unlock on ships, and the devs have gone on Holidays already when it was spotted.

This year looks promising - new ship (propably), the bugs fixed last year (they should be!), some new games and activities.

No way i will miss it!

    Edit:

Now the only thing missing (for now) is new ship info and stats...

I would also add that priorities on the dev team do seem to have changed some as a result of the new EP. Back then part of what caused so much anger was that gamebreaking bugs were not acknowledged or not fixed at all until patch day if they were going to be but things that would HURT the player got an emergency maintenance to implement.

I do see improvement in that area under Steve Ricossa, so I think that even if something goes wrong, we are likely to see a faster response that is more appropriate in tone.

Those will most likely be released later today or tomorrow.

It's a T6 Sleigher Class Science Dreadnought Freighter.

It comes equipped with a red matter charged secondary deflector that glows red and grants immunity to confuse or placate effects. :)

Tomorrow it seems, today we've got the other rewards.

BTW, the tac captain kit module appears to be missing.

One Punch Man is pretty good too. This guy...

I have never seen jumping to affect sliding on ice. I tested a few times. Didn't notice anything useful, so I stopped.
Also doing a roll slows you down (since you completely stop for a moment), and I've caught up to people who do that in both races (PvP and PvE), not effective.
I just learned to time when a course correction starts to take effect and time my turns that way.
I'm not saying I'm good, far from it, I just found learning the powersliding timing is much more effective for me than the other two means.
As someone else said, I use frosted boots a lot, so I've had a lot of time to practice. I even use the boots during the race (I don't remember if it had a noticeable effect, but it hasn't hurt either).

sorry, not this time. when each winter event is like the previous without any changes, except only retexturing, modified models; I'm not interested and I lost interest for this kind of event. And the race is just a pain in the behind; + the other stuff seems really useless.

maybe next year (if I still play at STO), if the event is really improved, with new stuff; I mean really new stuff, not again the same objects retextured.

I've actually concluded they harm more than help. If you're careful you can use the edges of the track where you have normal traction for part of the race, but not if you have the boots active.

Frosted boots+power sliding,+roll piece of cake. Shooter mode I almost forgot, shooter mode.

I think it is a klink shell of some description, being flown in reverse... a bit like the Nandi is suspiciously like the Intrepid shell flying in reverse.

I use the walk button to slow down just before tight corners. For those corners, it usually winds up being faster than power-sliding. There's a few corners that don't really have the margin for error for a power slide, or else I never found the correct racing line to survive 'em.

Timing a jump for _landing_ after the ledge (PVP) does two things. First, it keeps you from getting bounced off the track. There's an imperfection at the bottom if you're taking a middle-right racing line that can fling you to the right. Second, the uphill tick at the bottom can stall/slow you. A well-timed second jump at the bottom will keep you from slowing on landing.
Also doing a roll slows you down (since you completely stop for a moment), and I've caught up to people who do that in both races (PvP and PvE), not effective.

Rolling is situational and/or for emergencies. It's a chance to keep you the course when you TRIBBLE up, or when there's a corner you can't otherwise cope with. It's slower than not TRIBBLE up, but much faster than falling off the track. :)

I'm not saying I'm good, far from it, I just found learning the powersliding timing is much more effective for me than the other two means.

Powersliding is a good skill to have, but I've found some corners aren't worth powersliding on. You can beat it with situational walking.
As someone else said, I use frosted boots a lot, so I've had a lot of time to practice. I even use the boots during the race (I don't remember if it had a noticeable effect, but it hasn't hurt either).

Some people do well with the boots, and if you're comfy with them, great. :) For others (like me) it hurts far more than it helps. I need the maneuverability of being able to slow down. The straightaways aren't long enough to make up the time lost being unable to turn effectively.

*grin* I love the boots on the pond, though. :)
