Been very excited for the new Carrier. I love fighters. And if I can't fly one during normal missions I shall carry them! Just tough coming up with a name. But I finally got one. My great grandfather designed a carrier that went on to be called the U.S.S. Hornet. It'd be pretty cool if my characters in Star Trek captained a virtual ship of the same name....

U.S.S. Nibelung or U.S.S. Rhine Maiden
But I' will be going with one of those.
But it doesn't look like a nuclear wessel to me...

Since my original's current Odyssey is called the U.S.S. Admiral Ushakov, I'm going to try and stick with a Russian warship name. If I can squeeze it in, I'm gonna call my the U.S.S. Admiral Kuznetsov.
If not, I'll go with U.S.S. Admiral Lazarev.

can you tell us the way to alameda?! *insert russian dialect*^^
It can't be a RP sort of thing, because it'd be extremely controversial (not to mention wholly disrespectful) for countless people to design a ship, build it, then at the commissioning ceremony have the captain announce that they have pulled political strings to force the renaming of the ship to something that gives them more personal pleasure. That wouldn't go well at all.
In my case its a tribute to an old ship thats no longer in service, My buddy Joe, if he played STO (Maybe he does, haven't heard from him in years though) would more than likely name his ships after the ones he served on in the Navy (I know he served on both the Texas and the Ingersol). So in a sense there might be a little RP involved and/or respect for service.

I pretty much name my ships after things I love. I once had my ships named after the 12 Colonies from BSG. And right now I have a theme going where my ships are named after the ES's/ships from Xenosaga III
It just gives me a lil nostalgic feeling, also some names are just aesthetically pleasing.

Not really, no. Sisko contributed heavily to the development of that class of ship, so it's understandable the fallout was minimal. This was a much different situation from what I'm talking about, namely a situation where the newly assigned captain (who was not crucial to the design and development of the new ship and did not earn the respect from the people involved in its construction due to their contributions to the project) decides to rename the ship on-the-fly, purely for personal reasons.
There are other famous carriers like
USS Yorktown
USS Lexington
USS Saratoga
to mention a few you could even name it
USS Nimitz
which is a famous carrier in the navy current day if it hasnt been retired
Im torn between these two
USS Lexington
USS Nimitz
According to lore (at least at one point dont know if its still canon) Pike had the vessel he was assigned to command renamed the Enterprise.... imagine if he hadn't
Considering:
- USS Mount Olympus (highest peak in the Olympic range, and of course home of Zeus)
- USS Mount Rainier (highest peak in the Cascade range)
- USS Kalakala (first streamlined ferry, sadly scrapped earlier this year: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7007/6785994569_fffddaa3c1_b.jpg)
...and my favorite so far:
- USS Salish Sea (the larger network of waterways of which Puget Sound is a part)
Hehe, that reminds me of the names I gave two space stations in my DragonStar campaign. Tahoma and Verdana.
A player picked up on my theme* and suggested at some point that the characters should meed at the Rockwell café.
*) font names, not northwestern theme.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

The ship was initially meant to be named 'Yorktown' but was renamed at the last minute because of the launch of the United States revolutionary new warship the Enterprise class Nuclear Powered aircraft carrier and her predesesor from World War II. The first and only of her class she innovated technologies that transformed navies across the world.
So you could always name your new carrier Yorktown and be smugly content that only the biggest trekkies will get the reference.
First of all, I did not rename that ship, I got it with that name - at least in my headcanon. And why? Because I like it. I consider names that "feel right" for me very important for my enjoyment in a game. And after all, it appears in big letters on your login screen.
Also, people who care about names make Space a little more diverse, because even with all the variations on the same topic ("Enterpr1se" anyone?) there is more different names around than just with the standard names. "Captain, we got an emergency call from the USS Cherokee" - "Dang, that's the 17th Cherokee today")
(One thing I'd advise though: do not name a ship artificially after one of the names you may get by the game. Kind of funny bugs - nothing really worrying though - may appear if you commission another ship which then happens to accidentally get the same name.)
So U.S.S. Infinity is from Halo, What's November from?
Sounds fitting.
Maybe that's a different Hornet? U.S.S. Hornet (CV-8) sank after the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands in 1942 after being torpedoed twice, scuttled and then torpedoed again by the Japanese. She took a total of 16 torpedoes and 400 5 inch rounds before finally sinking with a loss of 140 of her crew over the course of the battle.
Somebody likes their German stories.
Thanks. And nice.
Cool.
Maybe it's a personal preference? Or from an rp standpoint, perhaps the Captain liked the ship and the name and made an effort to take command of it when he got the chance.
Fine idea.
Makes sense.
