Utopia Planitia Report #3

With the warped and scarred plating stripped away and the aft assembly exposed to space, Defiant’s rear hull was little more than a skeleton of beams and plasma conduits.

From a distance it looked like delicate wires wrapped into the approximate shape of the ship, like a holiday ornament.

So Kurland survived the war. And now we have an explanation as to the Exocomp "pets" in game: there are both sentient and non-sentient varieties.

The response came almost instantly: “Kurland here. We felt that on the bridge. What’s going on back there? We still don’t have external sensors.”

First thing that popped out when reading this.

Whetu is proving herself to be all kinds of crazy awesome. Lovely physics based solution, Newton would be proud.

It's a testament to Kurland's unique voice that I heard him clear as a bell reading this.

Normally these blogs explain new features in the ship, in this case though, it beautifully illustrated the aftermath of the war. And these two get all the "best" assignments. You would think that solving the Hestia's EPS problems would have gotten them out of the salvage work. Then again they are EPS specialists and this is an EPS problem. Call in the best.

In my head canon I have three sentient ones on my engineering crew. Don't play them in tridimensional chess, it's all they do in their off duty time.

I swear those two get into all sorts of shenanigans. Wonder what other ship captains would say at seeing that?

So I assume this means that the Defiant will be a Valiant Class next time we see it.

The nose of the Defiant can be launched as a weapon? Is that cannon? :P
Also, I wonder how Jeremy (Kirland's VA) feels that his char is a meme in the game.

True to her name, the Defiant is... causing all sorts of trouble for the people trying to repair her

"Kurland here." -- NUFF SAID XXD

I had no idea that the "nose cone" could be launched and used as a weapon O.O That thing truly is one large torpedo with a crew.

Credit goes for Whetu for the creative solution  Though if I were in her boots, I wouldn't have cared who doesn't like it, and have shut everything down until all the patch-work is done. May take longer, but a whole lot safer.

Saving the link, adding it to my collection. Can't wait to see more!

actually it does explain it for the Valiant, its obvious the nose cone with the torpedoes is a reference to the Quantum Warheads console.

The torpedo warhead detail comes from the DS9 Technical Manual, according to Memory Alpha:
The notched forward hull containing the vessel's navigational deflector and main sensors was a detachable single-use last-resort missile. This missile was equipped with a small impulse engine and a magazine with six torpedo warheads. These torpedo warheads were part of the ship's auto-destruct system and under more normal circumstances could be fired from the forward launcher. Any torpedo warheads left in the magazine would become the missile's warhead upon the missile's separation from the rest of the ship. If no torpedo warheads remained, then the missile would have to rely on kinetic energy alone. The ship would be unable to travel at high warp speeds without the missile since the latter contained the ship's navigational deflector.

Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

I'd like to point out that this is why the console was originally the "Photon Warhead Module". It was initially referring to this piece of technology. Shame that Cryptic caved to pressure to make it Quantum. Now the reference is slightly less apparent.

One thing I'm not following - the hull section that had been damaged had been preventing the EPS conduit being blown, so when it was removed, that caused the explosion?

Poor Kurland, poor Defiant. Ripped itself to pieces and now they're having to shoot other pieces at those pieces.

It depends on what your line for canon is. The DS9 tech manual on page 123 is where it's first mentioned. I consider that canon unless proven otherwise. The MSD doesn't really show it, which makes sense as it's a cross section and not something one would want someone who takes over the ship to be able to see on a general diagram.

But regardless it's not something that was established on screen, but it isn't something that Cryptic just pulled out of their TRIBBLE either. Like the Valiant's design and the Hegh'ta Bird of Prey it's something that was produced on DS9 but never realized on screen.

It's nice to see these kind of stories from the fed side but i also like to see stories from the kdf and romulan sides too.

Good read. It's incredibly difficult to work in zero gravity. All the techniques that are used in a gravity environment just don't happen. You get a good idea why just replacing components on the Hubbell can make you fill your EV suit with sweat - without the EPS conduits rupturing, of course. BTW - It was agreeable to see that Elyos was not vaporized.

The Post-War Era and Utopia Planitia Reports are written by a completely different department. The people who write these are not the ones responsible for coding the game.

Or they could add them as interactable NPCs to ESD (or to Utopia Planitia during Anniversary event). You could briefly chat to them to get a lore accolade, which would add the contents of these blogs to your accolades (like the Path to 2409 and New Romulus ones).

Hell, they could even get Trendy (assuming she's the one writing these) to voice Whetu:p

They seriously need to start making these available somewhere in-game. Maybe Memory Alpha.

They really should be permanent NPCs stationed around Mars as an accessible point for Fed-side players. Even if they just reuse the shipyard assets from the KDF raid on Mars in one of the missions, it would be fine. The main purpose would just be to show off newly released ships as well as tease some upcoming ships; both in Dev-written logs and in the actual space facilities (even if it's just an old model standing in).

For example; some Dev-writing over progress of the "big plans" for the Odyssey as a series of logs that are updated every other Thursday or so, with one Odyssey sitting in one of the larger shipyard bays.

They should just make the First Contact day Utopia Planitia map accessable all year long, via shuttle from ESD, and display new C-store ships there too.

MEGA WOW! That was one heck of a story rendition. We need to see this one in action in the next cut screen episode! GREAT story!

    Kurland here!

A pleasure to read, and as other mentioned, would be great to have these in game, perhaps that can be read on a pad in a certain designated location. Would also be great to see some more stories on the Rom and KDF side of things, as with Empress Sela which left me hanging here as to what she will do next.
