I honestly think that twerps and tools that do this should be charged with domestic terrorism, might scare a few of the kids away from this behaviour

Which hacker group is claiming responsibility and why are they attacking? I know most hacker groups attack because of censorship...censorship is a big no no and a lot of hacker groups will bring a server down over it, however...until we know which hacker group it is, there is no way of knowing.

This is most likely some guy that got banned from Neverwinter.

I managed to get my Fed Delta Recruit through the Iconian War despite all the DC's, lag, and whatever TRIBBLE this purported TRIBBLE has pulled.

I hope PWE sics the real feds on him!

Hopefully, this will be fixed soon. Tried to change characters and *WHAM!* everything ground to a halt.

Well... Twitter might have his IP as well so there is that. Besides, he posted pics of his shenanigans from his own computer.

Silly people thinking they're smarter than the script kiddy. If you look at the line of his screen shot, it says "reply from 208.95.185.222". In other words, it's the reply from the cryptic server. oi vay.

I think NeverGodz is actually Cryptic Tech Support. Everything got so stable, they needed to drum up some business, so they have a guy in their server closet flipping the on-off switch to the PDU.

Well, i think we need an event to make up for all our down time today, something like a replay of old series, it would be nice to be able to get some of those old rewards on new toons. Just to get some specialization points or upgrade things. A series a week until they are all done should do

Or better yet the return of OMEGA particals, just cuz i'm out now and need some more stuff upgraded

Are you joking or being serious? I did a google search and it seems that IP address is from Los Gatos, CA. - Cryptic Studios.

    http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/208.95.185.222

    https://db-ip.com/all/208.95.185

    http://eu-domains.ovh/208/95/185/208.95.185.61.html

    http://www.ipgeek.net/208.95.185

Everything seems to point that IP address at Cryptic.

After doing some googling it seems some people are upset about this http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/neverwinter/#/discussion/1203585/astral-diamond-changes/p1
    Leadership
As you may remember, we recently disabled the ability to use the Leadership profession on Gateway. This was due to an extreme number of bots generating far too much AD, and creating havoc with the AD economy. By disabling the profession on Gateway, we were able to reduce this artificially inflated number. Unfortunately, botters found a way around this fix. As we looked into the data, and as we analyzed what we could do to fix this exploit, we came to the conclusion that the way to stop the botters was to remove AD from the Leadership profession. There will still be a few sources in there, but nothing that botters can use to continue breaking the economy. In some cases, AD was replaced with extra XP, but by and large, AD was straight- up removed from the profession. We know this will be frustrating for those who were not exploiting, but the downside of leaving AD in the profession was too severe. Once this work is done, Leadership will be re-enabled on Gateway. Remember, we want players to receive Astral Diamonds for the time they spend actively playing the game, so (beyond the exploit) it didn't really make sense to have something that runs in the background as a major source of this currency.

I'm guessing the people who were botting this to exploit Neverwinter are retaliating for it.

So it is Cryptic's fault........for trying to prevent the Neverwinter economy from collapsing and shutting down something that was being heavily exploited.

Is this something that is legally actionable? That is to say, can Cryptic take effective action against this guy? It seems that his own posts with the time posted for when he is starting his attacks ought to count as some sort of evidence, since I'm reasonably sure that computer geeks can match up the timing.
  • rattler2rattler2 Member, Star Trek Online Moderator Posts: 58,521 Community Moderator
While I am not a lawyer, I would believe that it would be as Cryptic is a business, and the purpose of a DDoS is to block services from being usable via flooding the target. Essentially the perp was disrupting a busness and prevented said business from functioning and making money.

So... shot version... we could be looking at maybe Criminal Mischief at least if Cryptic wants to press charges.

Hopefully, Cryptic and their ever eager legal team, take that...individual to court (or at least tan his hide in the modern version of a woodshed!)

I am familiar with networks, programming, and some legal matters. First, the IP address that keeps getting reposted over and over is ( 208.95.185.222) Cryptic Studios. I seriously doubt the individual is dumb enough to post anything that will give you his name and address. Twitter will have an IP but that IP could trace back to a wifi station, coffee shop, Mc Donalds, or even a library. At best guess you would have his home city.

    As for Cryptic's/PWE options, I am unaware of their business model. After the attacks are ended, they can pay lawyers to acquire Twitters records at large cost. This price can vary greatly on several factors;
    1. How long the attorneys want to work hourly and get paid.
    2. How long Twitter's attorneys block their attorneys and want to get paid hourly doing that.
    3. How much Twitter is willing to settle on the price for a list that might contain his actual ISP address.
    4. Here is the kicker... Now you start back at step 1 with his ISP.
    5. If you find him can you sue him and get your money back? Heck no.

The servers where I worked got TRIBBLE years ago, Dow Chemical is a major chemical manufacturer. There was no effort made by the company to launch an investigation to find the hacker(s). There was a formal report made to the feds and as far as I know, no one was every investigated or even asked questions. This is a game company with the HQ based in China. Unless they send the Tongs after this guy he won't be touched.

This attack came because some TRIBBLE at "Never Enter" got the bright idea to mess with the player's fun. Another TRIBBLE got irate and started a denial of service attack. This TRIBBLE is going to bed without playing his Star Trek because of the first two schmucks.

    End of story.
