New Dawn - Terrans and Tholians

Tier 6 Ships

This is pretty much an inevitability. Which vessels do you think they will add to a lockbox or something? I've heard a lot of people ask for the Tholian Tarantula which could end up being a Tier 6. It would be interesting if they added a new class of ship as well, something about the size of the Recluse. Seems like the Tarantula would be too big.

I'd like to see the Terrans do this as well. It makes sense that the Terrans would steal plans from the Federation and make duplicates, but it seems like they would also design their own ships and try to outdo the Federation. Of course if they want to give us a Tier 6 Terran ship, then I would love to see a Tier 6 Mirror Odyssey. Of course I've been wanting to see a Tier 6 Tactical Odyssey for a while anyway.

Terran Forces

Hopefully the Terran's ground forces get an upgrade this time around. They're not particularly interesting to fight on the ground now, IMO. They're just mirror copies of regular Starfleet characters. Perhaps they should get their own unique uniforms instead of having different colored Starfleet uniforms. I know they're supposed to be the opposite of Prime Starfleet, but their history has been heavily changed after Kirk's meeting. They shouldn't be 100% the same as Starfleet and like the above idea of giving them unique ship classes, they should update other aspects of the Terrans. They had their own version of MACO in "In A Mirror Darkly" so it would be neat to see that here as well. And they should look more unique than just having the same armor we have now with a darker paint scheme.

Reputation System

Apparently we're getting a new Rep and we already have a Tholian Rep, so it's possible it's a Mirror Rep. Perhaps if the Terrans have their own MACO faction, then maybe that armor would be attainable through the Rep? While it would be MACO in design it would differ from Prime MACO since theirs is designed to combat the Borg. Terran MACO could be more well rounded to combat different types of enemies. This is of course if the Rep is based on the Terrans. There is also a mysterious race involved in this storyline so the Rep could involve them instead.

I'd like to see a Terran version of a Jupiter Class vessel as the boss of a Mirror STF. I suppose it will have to be named 'ISS Zeus'.

Mirror forces want to construct a beachhead in our universe, and they bring along the trusty Command and Control Dreadnaught from which their task force command leads the assault. The players must progressively defeat the picket scouts, the rapid response teams, the line of defense, and finally the command group.

    First Wave: Breach the Perimeter

Centaur class scouts are scattered about. They attempt to flee once combat begins, and any who do escape return with Steamrunner Escorts to press the attack. Preventing any Centaurs from escaping the initial assault should be a priority because they also warn the Mirror Task Force, which leads to a stiffer resistance in the Second Wave.

When all 20 Centaurs have been eliminated, the Second Wave begins, even if there are Steamrunners still in battle.

    Second Wave: Rapid Response Wings

Various Tier II and III Science and Cruiser ships begin the combat in this segment of the attack, with the arrival of some hard-hitting Escorts as soon as the players are fully engaged. In this wave, Cruisers, Support Cruisers, and Heavy Cruisers form the backbone of the attack, with Science Vessels and Research Science Vessels bolstering their attacks or sowing confusion among the player fleet. After the attack begins a wave of Escorts and Heavy Escorts joins in to make its first attack run.

In the variant of this wave, for each First Wave ship which escaped to warn the fleet, an Exploration Cruiser and a Reconnaissance Science Vessel support the initial attack, with a Tactical Escort included among the Escort wing.

The Second Wave is on a timer which is intended to show the amount of time required for the Mirror Task Force to form its battle line. Beating the timer results in an average mission difficulty in the third Wave, while failing to beat it means the Task Force had time to gather its strength. Note: if one or more Centaurs escaped, this timer is reduced by 5% for each warning the Mirror Task Force received.

Third Wave: The Line of Battle

Now we see the Task Force bring out it's big guns in an attempt to eliminate the player fleet. Waves of Tier III and IV ships screen for the Tier V heavy ships which form the core of this wave. This is an all-out brawl. Since there is a large selection of ships available at this range there should be a randomness as to what appears, with carriers and cruisers, escorts and science ships mixed in a grab-bag of mayhem and destruction.

If the Second Wave Timer expires, this wave is ready to attack, and will do so even with Second Wave ships still on the map. If the players defeat the Second Wave before the timer expires, then the final ships will trickle into the battle as it progresses. There should be a direct correlation between the timer and the arrival of the Third Wave ships, such that if the players only required 50% of the timer to complete the Second Wave, they begin the Third Wave facing 50% of the Mirror Task Force assigned to Third Wave, and as the timer continues, the extra ships enter until at the end of the Second Wave timer, 100% of the Third Wave ships are present on the battlefield. (Note that the escape of one or more Centaurs from the First Wave will affect the speed at which Third Wave ships are ready to deploy.)

The Line of Battle is deployed forward of the Reserve, and any player ship may attack the Mirror Task Force Reserve at any time during the Third Wave thus drawing them into the battle, (perhaps prematurely.) Wiser skippers will finish off the Third Wave before pressing home their attack, but it is possible that one or more of the Fourth Wave vessels will be drawn into the Third Wave battle prematurely.

    Fourth Wave: Attack The Reserve

In this wave, Tier V and VI ships attempt to form a defensive perimeter around the ISS Zeus. This wave is heavy on Carriers, with Battlecruisers to provide the big punch necessary to take down the players' ships. The Zeus itself is a formidable foe, with an astonishingly large repertoire of tricks and weapons to make any attack on it difficult at best.

Additionally, in this wave, the ISS Spock, a Fleet Reconnaissance Science Vessel, is tasked to defend the Zeus at all costs. When the defense is going badly, the ISS Spock will attempt to open a Tykken's Rift to allow the Zeus to escape back into the Mirror Universe. This is triggered when two-thirds of the Mirror Task force has been eliminated. This can be defeated by the destruction of the Spock, or by preventing the ISS Zeus from entering the Rift, either by movement control or destruction of the Zeus. At every opportunity, once triggered, the Spock will attempt to reopen a rift for the Zeus.

The Fourth Wave is on a timer as well. If the players' fleet cannot defeat the Mirror Task Force before the timer runs out, a Recall Order is given and the players' fleet retreats from the battle. This is a defeat and lesser rewards are given.

If the Zeus and the Spock successfully retreat into the Tykken's Rift and the remaining Mirror Task Force ships are defeated, the mission is considered a success.

If the ISS Spock is destroyed the reward is increased with bonus marks or perhaps a random Uncommon or Rare Mirror Universe Console drop.

If the ISS Zeus is destroyed, the reward is increased with bonus marks as well as a Mirror Universe Token used to purchase special Mirror Universe Reputation Gear.

For the ISS Zeus, Gravity Well coupled with Beam Overload is a primary attack, drawing players' ships into the maw of the Gravity Well where its multiple Dual Phaser Beam Arrays, bolstered by Beam Overload, can fire forward into the maelstrom. A secondary attack is to use Zeus's many beam arrays to Fire At Will against multiple player targets.

A final note: I have long been an advocate of dedicated point defense weapons. It just makes sense in a game with destructible weapons such as HY Torps and Fighter craft. To that end I would advocate the Jupiter Class be equipped with a ninth weapon system which is a 360 Degree Point Defense Quad Cannon or a 360 Degree Point Defense Beam Array. It's range would be limited to 3km, and it would always auto-target the nearest projectile, mine, defense platform, or small craft within that radius. With a very high rate of fire and very modest damage, only destructible objects would be at risk, but it would require volleys of HY Torps to penetrate its radius. This purely defensive weapon would not fire on anything outside its point defense radius and could not be manually targeted. A large, fat, slow-turning ship would have use of such a system, while any ship could slot it if the player decides the reduced DPS is worth the trade off for higher defense. The Jupiter Class ships would have an additional special 360 Degree Weapon Slot which would only accommodate weapons with a universal arc of fire such as turrets, [Arc] trait beams, and Point Defense weapons.

Tholians and Mirror are both awesome base factions for new ships.

The Tholians got the Tarantula which is not as big as most ppl think so it may be a lockbox or other reward sonewhere down the line.

Mirror would give them the ability to give us the mirror dread which could be made into an awesome ship especially for feds as it wouldnt have to be bound be normal starfleet rule while still looking like the fed dread from the final tng episodes.

That's a very shaky basis for thinking the Tholians will be involved. Since the panel said that the race getting the backstory is "from canon, but never before seen in STO"... they're not talking about the Tholians.

Now, perhaps they are involved in the Mirror Universe sub-plot, since there's precedence for that... but the devs made no mention of the Tholians in the panel, or any of the announcements so far.

May be correct, may not... pump the brakes on it, though, IMHO.

And who said that it will be Terran Empire plot ? Not Mirror Iconians plot ? Iconian War 2.0 :D

Maybe the Terran Empire got their backsides handed over to them by Mirror Iconians, and now we'll have refugees from the Mirror Universe incoming and Mirror Iconians chasing them. :D

About as excited as it would be to be castrated.

The Dominion War started midway through Season 5 of DS9, then ending in Season 7. Yet the Dominion started to TRIBBLE around with everyone at the end of Season 2.

We've seen the Iconians ravage a planet with a single shot? Why haven't they done that to Earth, Kronos, New Romulus etc...

Why do the "Tales of the War" make the Iconian War more engaging than the current in game missions.

Where are the Undine? Elachi? Voth? Borg? Cardassians?

Where are the Red Alerts? Battlezone? Patrols? Shuttle mission? It's been building up to this and nothing.

Why haven't we been trying to "Unite the galaxy" against a commoe foe? Like we did with the Vaadwaur. (Maybe making the war "Star Treky")

What are the other nine Iconians like?

I'm especially uninterested in the whole Mirror Universe. Looking at the number of missions we have with them already, it just seems disporportionate considering their on-screen time. I know you could probably level the same argument towards Romulans and Klingons, but at least they are prime universe... you know... the reason that draws us all into Star Trek in the first place.

I'm a little worried that Cryptic view the Mirror Universe as an escape from building prime universe content - considering it is more manageable to control and to deliver in bitesize chunks than prime universe themed content has been up to this. It would seem more achievable to build content around 'a mirror universe incursion' than to address the lack of prime content on a ground map like Vulcan or Qo'nos First City (which would only pale in comparison to the quantity of content that would be required to make these places feel like immersive environments).

We're not getting a Typhoon, guys. They've been completely removed from the Fed side, and the Terran Empire's battleships - while still using the Typhoon model - are now called "Command Cruisers". I expect the last Typhoons to die out next season.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Just because the NPC version has been removed doesn't mean a revamped, playable version isn't on the radar.

Personally, I never liked the design of the Typhoon. The Command Cruisers look like a pretty good successor to the basic design of the Typhoon. They keep the doubled up nacelles that theTyphoon has, but have a lot more detail.

That could be a possibility since the Tzenkethi system was added to the game. The Dominion attempted to ignite a war between the Federation and the Tzenkethi as well so maybe they're worth exploring.

They should be in it. It's mentioned here that "Cardassian storyarc will be revamped and provide the back story for much of the new content." If this is the case, then we will probably kill James O'Brien like we always do and then Leeta will become our enemy later on in the new content.

It could make an interesting story to explain why the Tholians are so interested in the mirror universe. Since they was messing around with it on Nukura. And they never explained what that leader was talking about on New Romulas in that underground base mission.

After the horrible fiasco they did to finish up the Iconians. I hope this turns out better.
