That Tacky Resolution...

Yeah, I'm talking about the Resolute Class (T6 Excelsior). Whoever designed it, and whoever gave that design the thumbs up needs to go back and start their Academy Training again. It's horrible. It looks like a cross between one of the new Command Cruisers and the Vesper Class (and neither of those designs are worth much in my book). Yes, I know many designs and such are based on opinion, but my opinion for your Resolute Class; it looks fugly.

What gets me more so, is that there are some lovely designs out there that could have been used for inspiration;

1) bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Post_Dominion_War_Excelsior_refit;93828
2) meshweaver.com/images/models_fpeb-schem.jpg
3) nathanzeichner.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/excel2v2.jpg
4) i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu134/katar8010/excelsiorrefit.png

But no, we get this: images-cdn.perfectworld.com/arc/6f/5d/6f5d48f50b2a63f5526adb97555116ed1436971507.gif

Any hype (or hope?) that I had has since dissipated. Don't get me started on her attributes either. Could have at least thrown in a Pilot ability.

Well, for commercial reasons they couldn't have used any of the ones you pointed out as a design, but I agree that it doesn't look as much like an Excelsior tribute as it could have. It's not the worst ship I've seen in the game from an aesthetic standpoint, but it could be better IMHO.

Simple evolution of the design from circular saucers to ovoid saucers (Sovereign) to chevron/delta saucers (Prometheus), which temporarily goes back to ovoid saucers (Ent-J), then shifts to no saucers, just delta arrow shape (29th Century Fed ships).

The photobucket Graff Spree image would have been nice as an alternative skin for a T6 Fleet variant though.

The Resolute just pulls from the Presidio class, which in and of itself was inspired by the Excelsior in design. So it should have been no surprise that the successor to the Excelsior class would have been a simplified Presidio design.

    Wow... those designs are awful..
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

It doesnt matter, they could have just picked any model and make a new one from there, that means nothing. Im pretty sure (well i can tell by myself i was a modeller time ago) they copied a lot of models from the base and they just made changes in real-time. Sometimes (in fact most of the times) is how you do it. But i agree with the op. Lately the imagination and common sense of the designers are being really really dissapointing.

BUT, and this is for the op, the models you posted are even uglier for an excelsior revamp.. so... the problem is, i dont think the op wants an Excelsior revamp, he just wants a good looking ship...

theres egg shape and "egg-shape parody"-shape saucer. this one is a parody of egg-uber-long-egg-shape saucer. its way to long to be a structural integrity improvement. from design perspective the problem is "stationary neck" with "forward dragging" saucer.

you cannot mix that. either both is vertical and stationary (dragging to center of mass) or BOTH neck and saucer have to be "stretching out" away from center of mass. mixing a nearly vertical neck with SUCH excessive long egg-shape is just visually repelling.

Well your point is invalid if we look to all the customizable new stafleet ships we have out there. Specially the command cruisers. lol.

    That's not it. :)

I love the Excelsior; I own a Fleet one, and was eagerly anticipating this one. The ones I've linked quite possibly are ugly, but I would argue (or discuss) that they're more likely to be given the refit treatment compared to the ship we've been given; which hardly even resembles an Excelsior.

Some definitely, others I think are just too similar to the Excelsior.

My biggest problem with the Vesta and Dyson variant ships was that the differences were not really big.

Compare that to the Difference between, say, the Galaxy or the Vor'Cha variants.

The models are not ugly. They are ugly if you think on em as an Excelsior revamp. Those models have nothing to do with an Excelsior..

And here i am, thinking that they are not even close to an Excelsior look lolz.

The Dyson ships dont have any "variant". So they only have 1 costume. The Vesta variant costume are exactly the same each other, the only thing that changes is the pattern and the shape of some parts by 1,2 %... lol.

I disagree, I love that first one, it looks to me like a stepping stone between the Excel and the Sovi, like the Ambi was for the Excel to Galaxy.

The first one is the only one i cant see (the images will not show up). But the other ones, are just like an assault cruiser refit or something like that. Nothing like an excelsior.

Personally... I really don't care what the Resolute looks like. If I ever got one I might kitbash her with Excelsior parts or see how she looks with only Resolute nacelles, kinda like when I took my old T2 Connie and just slapped Exalibur nacelles on her.

lol, well, if someone start saying that the first reason to buy a ship is NOT the asthetic thing.. this is bad, really bad... because all the stats are basically a copy / paste and there is nothing more cryptic can squeeze out of it. It is what it is, people just want the new shiny no matter what, it will be always the same story.. unfortunately.

None of those suggestions fit the 25th century Starfleet aesthetic... like, at all. The Resolute does.

Which makes it a better design for STO, regardless of one's opinion on whether it's prettier or not.

Yup, unfortunately what players (customers) want was never considered by cryptic since eons ago. People who flies the excelsior want an excelsior asthetic, but again cryptic just did what they want without even thinking what they were doing lol. You guys who keep saying that the asthetics fits the 25th century are right, but again that is not the point of the issue. Players who fly the excelsior dont give a sdfsdfk about the 25th century asthetics. Cryptic again never considered that. If this were a normal mmorpg cryptic will be losing money for all sides lol.

I understand perfectly fine what you said. Its you the one who dont understand the point of releasing a 25th lookalike ship. I am talking about cryptic, they should not have released an excelsior revamp with totally different asthetics, because then it is not an excelsior anymore. Why they did it?? THATS THE POINT.

When they release a new ship, it doesnt matter too much the asthetics talking about old ships. Because those ships are new and no one ever saw em before. So it doesnt matter if they look old or new or watever. But if you release revamps of old ships, it doest make any sense to change all the asthetics. The didnt do it with the neghvar, intrepid, the mogai or the Dedirex, for example. Why they do it now with the excelsior??

Technically they did. They kept the same basic silhouette while updating it to match 25th Century asthetics but maintained the ability to use the older parts. For example the Andromeda shares the same basic layout of the Galaxy, but doesn't look like a Galaxy. She's still recognizable as being related however. In a way the Resolute does the same thing, but it is more radical because we're going from 23rd Century design straight to 25th Century design, kinda like how the Excalibur is an evolution of the Connie Refit.

The Vesper class though... the less said of that abomination the better.

Without seeing what the Resolute looks like outside of static pictures... I won't completely write her off.

They changed classic nacelles for barbaric ones.. they changed the classic soucer for well, dunno how to call it. The only thing this new excelsior has in common with the classic one is the general mass of the ship. It is still slim and large, but thats all. Everything about asthetics.. i really dont know how you guys cant see it lol. Yes you can use older asthetics but if the guy dont own the old excelsior (hipotetically speaking) and he wants one, then the new excelsior is not what he wants, period. I suposse that only a player who really loves the excelsior legend will see things as they are, not as cryptic wants.
