I'm wondering if they'll patch Risa's data when the summer event goes live. I can't see them wanting to spend time on that right now when they'll just be dumping a whole mess of new programming in within half a month.
- Cryptic will keep ignoring the issue at least until the summer event starts
- Once the event launches, more people will suddenly start to report framerate issues on Risa, crying they cannot participate in the event and get their new toy
- It'll take at least several weeks for Cryptic to acknowledge the issue and maybe do something about it
- Meanwhile, THE METRICS will say players show little interest in the summer event, which Cryptic will certainly make a note of, despite the fps issue.
It may come off as rude or trolling, but honestly, considering there's been absolutely no response regarding the S10 fps issues we can safely assume this will be the case, at least for some players.
I'm not really looking forward to this. With such horrendous fps issues I cannot see myself doing more than just forcing a single character through the daily with 5fps, and getting the hell out of there. I won't even consider the hoverboard race, or anything else they'll come up with. The Favour grind was annoying as it was, but I surely won't bother with it if Cryptic won't do anything about the framerate.

Me niether. The summer event is the highlight of STO events for me and now I'm looking at complete non-participation because of the ground map framerate issues. My biggest concern right now is not whether or not this will be fixed in time for Risa (probably not going to happen) its that these framerate issues aren't widespread enough to force productive action. I've been spending time on risa testing various troubleshooting steps (in short there's nothing reasonable a user can do to fix this) and there's no indication from player behavior or chat content that the map is FUBAR. Ditto forums and reddit, S10 framerate issues are only an occasional topic (despite how they can absolutely end the usefulness of some maps, ex. new romulus command). It might be an isolated issue.
Those affected by long-term framerate issues could therefore just be a tick in the metrics adding to the general player turn-over, dropping off but while leaving a viable population. Hopefully not, hopefully there'll be a fix soon, but right now from all potential sources of info there's no indication that it'll happen.
And for cryptic, when the discussion gets to a reasonbly justifiable point of actual DOOOOM! you need to step up your responses. With no prospect of an adequately functional game in the near term I (I won't speak for anyone else here) am seriously investigating other ways of spending my game time besides total-long-shot fixes for this one MMO. There's a period where I'll still be considering STO as a worthwhile game but the longer this **** goes on the more likely it is I'll find an acceptable replacement. The clock is ticking and that's not an attempt to leverage market forces but to explain the seriousness of persistent, gameplay neutering bugs like this (since it seems like player investment is being taken for granted on framerate issues.)
Its directly undermining ALL other developments, ALL other PR. Your company may want to promote new missions and events but with EACH piece of new content there's the very serious question (as seen in the Blood of the Ancients forest section) of whether or not it'll be a chugging mess. Quite a lot doesn't (see. Delta Flight) but the uncertainty factor dampens everything. And the longer one faces that, the more prominent becomes the question "why bother?" And at a certain point frustration with performance WILL override other considerations (such as preferred gameplay, setting, features, and monetary scheme). Its just a matter of letting the pressures build.
If you can't fix it, you should be able to aknowledge the problem. Its the least the company can do. If there is no fix in the foreseeable future (as I'm begining to suspect the lack of interaction indicates), its better to know than to be endlessly strung along from patch notes to patch notes on false hope (and mounting pressure which isn't going to make the consumer-side easier to handle).

Given that I have the show FPS work around running I'll go ahead and provide some numbers for the Risa slowdown on my system
Ground map baseline ~40 FPS
Walking towards resort building on wooden walkway: ~10 FPS
Walking through resort building (around area of dance plantform) ~7-9 FPS

Walking back out through lobby (way I came in): ~8.7 FPS
Still in resort building, almost at wooden walkway (looking away from island towards liner, almost at the point where the neighboring dance platform ends): ~16 FPS (sudden jump)
On wooden walkway, near first gazebo (looking away from island, at Risan Liner): ~20 FPS

I'll be surprised if the issue will even be acknowledged by that time. Hell, at this point I won't be surprised it'll be ignored completely.
I filed a ticket in support about this problem and I did get a response back. To paraphrase "Sorry about that, known issue. Investigating."
Whether or not this gets fixed is a separate matter (still doubtful), but despite a lack of communication here there does seem to be awareness of the problem.

My buddy burstdragon wanted me to give you all a heads up, as he and I have this problem too.
"I worked with a couple of prominent members of the STO community to try and diagnose the problem, and see if it could be solved externally, and if so, I would have given the info to linksword to post to the forums.
Unfortunately, the external attempts all failed to resolve the problem. So what I've done is linked this thread to Salamiinferno and Borticus on Twitter, and will link it again on Monday. Hopefully, with the EP's attention on it, we'll see some kind of response to this.
Believe me, I want it fixed too. It's really annoying, and having experienced it first hand during testing on TRIBBLE, I really want to see it fixed, since it kills any enthusiasm for playing.
I honestly haven't noticed any serious fps drops since I started playing again in the past week. Haven't been down on Risa, though, but for me the game runs unbelievably smooth everywhere I've been, way beyond what I had gotten used at in the past. The visual quality of some objects is however no longer up to snuff, but I can't tell if it's related to the better framerate or not, since the game doesn't load my GPU to a point where it should make a difference.
AMD FX-8350 in MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard
Asus Geforce GTX 960 overclocked
16 GB DDR3 - Kingston HyperX Genesis
Bloom is off, all sliders on max, most dropdowns on High (because I can't tell the difference between Max and High, except for unstable framerate with everything on Max).
Also worth noting that Cryptic has stated several times that the game isn't optimized to run with every graphic setting maxed out, because the majority of players aren't capable of playing the game with those settings. And since they're a PWE company they're forced to cater to only care about the majority.

I keep testing Risa to see if I can find anything that might help and it looks like areas of high density foliage and small objects cause me the greatest lag and now I'm wondering if maybe there's a spawning/rendering error that's causing a duplication of all the objects in some of these maps.

Thoughts on that?
The vegetation there (but it should be said not on all maps, for example the Dyson Battlezone Park is fine) does seem to be the issue but I'd hesitate to actually diagnose the problem (because with code there doesn't have to be a physical, in game-world problem such as object duplication. Something could just be running mad in the system that handles textures, rendering, shading, or something else completely [animation? Some of that veg does "wave" gently]) Similarly it might not actually be the vegetation but something in the same area (such as perhaps a particular ground texture or a particular way the shadowing interacts in that area.) There's a lot you could speculate on but at no point (short of finding a fix on our end) could we hand that speculation over to cryptic and say "well there's your problem!"
That's basically cryptics job, and with summer PR started it would be very, very, very nice if we could get some word here about whether or not this bug is likely going to be quashed in time (since whatever the answer at least then its not going to be as much of a launch day shock and frothing rage afterwards.)

And with this week's update just unlocking the new episode we're down (next week) to the last update prior to the summer event (with the incoming PR being severely undercut by the [as now] likely prospect that this won't be will be fixed in time.)
Great job! I know there's a certain amount of sympathy one should have for people with difficult jobs in technical areas but this could certainly have been handled better.

I just wish they would tell us something, like what they suspect is the problem, then we could go into the game and try to troubleshoot in what way we can.
As it stands, I bet the forums will light up with flaming rage come event day, and players go down and find they get 1-5 FPS.

Well, perhaps they'll extend the duration of the event if they can't fix the issue in a timely manner. We've seen them do it when there have been server crashes. We can only hope.

1. Thanks for the update!
2. Well its good to know from another source they're getting right on it.
3. Getting right on it NOW doesn't bode well for next Thursday (though of course I could be reading too much into incidental word choice.)
As a note, I can confirm one more problem map on my end: the ground componet of "city at the edge of never" (ie. the ruins.) No vegetation but its an exterior level part of the FED revamp. To summarize all like it, New Romulus, and Risa are very and invariantly choppy. Somewhat choppy are the Outskirts and Park of the dyson ground battlezone, ESD (it seems like the vegetation in the central area), Kobali Prime, and allied sphere space (when looking east) and as a point of comaprison to sphere allied space, the dyson space battlezone is flawless ATM. The only affected PVE so far I've found is the Herald Sphere (slight framerate issues irrespective of graphics setting with the central energy nexus spanning the gateways during the final stage.)

Checked the current Holodeck build as well as the new Tribble build. Still no change - the performance is terrible. Risa runs like TRIBBLE even on the absolute minimum settings, despite the fact it looks like something from 1996.
Guess we'll have to wait for the event to start. Perhaps then more people will start to report the issue.
As it is, I can't see myself doing anything on Risa, other than perhaps the daily for the ship. And no, I won't spend Lobi on the event currencies... don't count on it Cryptic.

Indeed, technically its out of our hands (except where new details emerge. Speaking of, new baffling framerate drop found in Qo'Nos orbit during the first Fel'Khr episode, particularly around first few groups of enemies.) However lets just say that until its fixed its not time to let cryptic off the hook (as technical fixes are sometimes a very, very long time coming. Not often, but we're not in the clear yet PARTICULARLY for the summer event.)

Errrr... please explain to me how exactly a copy of someone's character could help with resolving an FPS issue?
Possibly by removing all player-side variables not to do with hardware?
I'm not going to start criticizing their methods (except for support telling me one thing and the devs saying another, my ticket from a couple weeks back stated that this issue was already being investigated) because quite frankly I and I don't think many people here have the experience necessary to do so. I'm just going to say that without a fix in this week's patch notes the summer event is now a bust. A fix may be incoming but the lasting impression this year is going to be of bitter disappointment, not of fun. Fun may eventually happen but its now officially the second banana.

I honestly wonder if there will be many more reports of this in a few hours, once people start beaming down to Risa.
Probably, its easy to miss if you're not leveling or not a Romulan. I seriously doubt though there's going to be a Dooooooom! chanting mob but given lets say that there's going to be more people testing this glitch we might get enough new reporters for a more proactive dialog with Cryptic. Its not going to help technically but maybe we'll see a timeframe.

Well, I can confirm Risa is unplayable for me on my default settings, which I've been playing the game on for several years now, and is BARELY playable on absolute minimum graphics settings, running at around 10 fps.
Well, I can confirm Risa is unplayable for me on my default settings, which I've been playing the game on for several years now, and is BARELY playable on absolute minimum graphics settings, running at around 10 fps.
*sigh*
Sigh indeed, and in the interest of data gathering I sullied myself by turning zone chat on. Its being mentioned by a few people there too (not by all, confirming this glitch only affects a certain section of the population that's still sizable enough for affected players not to be a complete rarity.)
So in summary.
-Risa [among several other maps] is definitely not playable for a section of the population.
-This issue was reported many weeks in advance through multiple channels (so no excuses from cryptic about only now getting on the problem.)
-It needs to be fixed by next week at the very latest. No "well let's be understanding about the difficulty of game design." If the Summer event isn't going to be a massive, game undermining, bust for affected players this absolutely needs to be resolved in the very near future (at least on Risa).
And for those just joining us:
-The framerate issues only affect a select few ground maps (ex. FED revamp outdoor environments, New Romulus Command, Risa)
-These just started in Season 10
-Not everyone is affected.
-There's not a damn that thing we've found that you can do on your end to fix it.
-Its on cryptic.
If you want to help the best thing you could probably do is to post GPU and CPU specs.
Ex. AMD Phenom II x6 1045T, ATI Radeon 260x (and Nvdia GTX 460)

Guess we'll have to wait for the event to start. Perhaps then more people will start to report the issue.
As it is, I can't see myself doing anything on Risa, other than perhaps the daily for the ship. And no, I won't spend Lobi on the event currencies... don't count on it Cryptic.
Well, you might want to check the above messages. As it stands, we've been given info directly from STO staff stating that they're looking into it. Reporting the issue is no longer of concern, but getting it fixed.
