Too Many Free Ships?

I don't think there are too many free ships and imho, changing the currency isn't really a big deal either. But, like many of the above posters, retiring the past ships is a stupid idea UNLESS they are coming back as T6, which I would be ok with.

Now on the PR and good business sense on the retirement of ships if they are not coming back as T6. How about go with this is the last year of being able to get the Cruiser, and Corvette along with the changing of the currency. That would be the fairest way to do it. This would get people to log in for one last chance to get the ship, Cryptic get people running the daily for the new currency and keeping with the f***ing metrics and players can get the ship.

Things like ship slots are a plague, they straight make no sense. If someone wants to buy a new ship, let them buy a freaking new ship, not charge them even more money in order to be able to use something he/she had bought!
I need to get to him. I can't just leave him out there alone. - Sometimes you've got to makes sacrifices, Lara. You can't save everyone. - I know about sacrifices. - No, you know about loss. Sacrifice is a choice you make. Loss is a choice made for you. - I can't choose to let him die, Roth.

What i don't understand is why people are saying the "free" ships are no good because 'T6'. There are players out there still flying Excel's, Obelisk's and Atrox's at end game. Heck I've even seen some flying Connies! Simply because they want to fly that ship.

Of course they aren'tT6 ships, they were never mean to be! Some of them are though very good T5/U ships.

I really wanted the RLC for my Rom Delta Recruit, because frankly, it's the only decent "assault cruiser" available to Roms. It's actually a darn good ship to fly. The closet alternative is the Mirror Mogai, but that doesn't get a -U option.

Retiring the the event currency each year? Fine, i can live with that.
Retiring the old event ships? NO WAY!

If not in the Zen/Lobi store, how about the GPL store? Few people bother playing Dabo to get GPL because there really isn't that much that's worth buying, but what if there were retired event ships for sale there? The Dabo table at Drozana would be packed to the rafters!

What's keeping me from using my own actual money to buy ships from the store?

    T6 and T5U are.

I used to buy the three pack (back when the set consoles sucked and weren't worth the slot) when I wanted just one of the ships because eventually I'd probably have a captain for the other two.

Now that ships expire, purchases for the possible future make much less sense.

The upgrade only works on one variant not the entire class.

That's why I don't buy ships any more.

I don't have confidence in them being around long enough to be worth it.

Plus now I have to make sure I like not only the look of the ship but the spec of the ship, usually site unseen.
This is my Risian Corvette. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

on principle I would agree with this however there is a apparent limit to the number of ships you can have access to due to software reasons, this is why if you want new ships you must delete ones you can like old ones you never use or one you can claim back at a later time, its just a pity they don't make all ships reclaimable this would alleviate some of the problems with owning too many ships.

they would still sell ship slots for players who like to have quick access to a large choice but it would help out players a lot who cant afford ship slots or those that have reached the limit.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Let's face it, the free ships were always an incentive for you to buy extra ship slots and/or a means to give you a 'free' console, that you then need 3 other C-Store ships for to form a complete set with. And you know what?! I got no problem with that.

What I *do* have a problem with, however, is having run out of ships slots -- from being a loyal customer, you know -- and now no longer having a way to add new ships, ever, or be forced to discharge an old one.

Tl;dr: there's not too many free ships in this game, but too few ships slots to purchase.

Simple solution. Allow you to discharge and reclaim ships.... They can't possibly lose that much money on people who buy ships twice because they are out of slots....

you can already discharge and reclaim c-store ships for free, its only non c-store ships you cant reclaim.
and they loose no money from them in most cases as they are mostly free ships.
you have no need to buy c-store ships more then once.

    Can't reclaim fleet ships though.

Anyway, what other reason could there be to reduce the number of free ships besides thinking there are too many of them?

I have no idea why they stop you being able to get old event ships just as I have no idea why they implemented the feature in the first place.

I thought it would be as it was intended the first year or as it is for the anniversary ships, if you did not get it then you would never get it.

its like that with every other game I have played that offered free items from time to time.

So before everyone complained the game was Pay to Win and now there are too many free ships?

    What?
I have literally seen it all now.

You guys are seriously talented in your ability to find literally anything to cry and moan about.

Being so ridiculously angry at anything and everything is just as dumb and as blinded as accepting anything the developers do...

Nah, read less into it. I read the pondering of if we have too many free ships, or questioning if the devs think we have too many free ships. Even though this is an MMO not everything is ******** and moaning / personal attack / someone speaking for everyone. (Yeh surprise surprise)

Meh those "free" ships are a liability. I don't want them on my bloody team in an STF.

Not wanting to/not having a good idea for a three-piece set bonus for a full range of Risian consoles? Wanting to start the whole thing (set of 3 event ships) over at T6? Wanting to come up with a whole new system for the future, instead of "have to come up with a new ship & console every winter/summer"?

Just random possibilities, I've got no real dog in this race. Sure, I've got lots of alts, many of whom have several of the holiday ships. But I don't really care about grabbing the Risa ships on my alts who don't have them. /shrug

Who'd want an escort that can tow all the nanite spheres quite some distance away from the transformer or just about any ship (with Romulan rep T5) away from rescue ships anyways?

I really don't have a horse in this race as I don't care all that much about the Risian ships -- I gave up about a 1/3rd of the way through on last summers event for the ship.

But what I see is the issue is how the dev team handles their public relations and communications. I suppose there is a logic or reason why they put out blogs with information piecemeal. However if they had one single blog post that details the phase out of the pearls, what is in the Summer 15 event, what ship(s) you get, how you get them, etc.... a lot of the rage would not be there.

Based on what we know there is certainly reason to be upset. But honestly without knowing any details I don't think all the rage is frankly founded or worth it for a video game. It can go a lot of ways from something really generous -- say a three-pack of Risian ships all at T6 incl the consoles or a kick in the nuts.

i don't think that there are too many free ships. the problem is the price of the new ships, and also reward ships put in the lobi store.

currently i use the free dyson destroyer (upgraded), and i like it, but how i could buy the advanced destroyer from the lobi store? i don't open enough boxes ( 0 to 1 each month)

i would buy a upgrade token for having the dyson T5-u upgraded to advanced, but never i'm going to open x boxes for having 600 lobi

+ there is a lack of diversity in the new ships. they have all the same stats, just the skins are differents.

if they want to sell more ships, the prices must be lowered and they must offer more diversity. Each faction should have a real gameplay difference.

personally i don't plan to buy new ships. i bought

    - Matha raptor + 1 fleet module: 3500 zen
    - Faeht warbird + 3 fleet modules : 4500 zen

it is enough for me for a long long time. With the old prices, i was able to buy more ships, not only because the real cash needed was less important; but also psychologically. i can't put a lot of money in virtual things. this is why i'm not interested by star citizen, the prices of the ships are totally insane.

Regarding pricing.. I feel theres a missed opportunity there. If they dropped the old t5's by 500z when t6 came out i feel like more people would be inclined to bag then abd then get an FsM and upgrade token. Instead the new stuff just got jacked up 500z to 3k. But i also am not griping.. Ive gotten t5 ships since t6 happened hust feels like they would have made out on the deal. Regarding everybodys apparent "need" to upgrade.. I have an intel qib and the dauntless but honestly theres so much if the same coming out like the command and pilot ships that i just kind of lost interest. The presidio im considering but beyond that there was first of all too much too fast, and second besides the options for a few different abilities, the ships thekselves dont stand out to me like OMG thats awesome i have to have it.. Theyre ok and by no means horrible, just not so much different that i feel theres any MAJOR benefit.

Ill likely continue to use the boats i have for the foreseeable future because theres no gamebreaking NEED to adopt these the pilot or command abilities.

A purpose of events like the anniversary, Christmas and Summer events is to have fun and give free stuff (even though they dont but if they want people to play you have to give free stuff as an incentive to enjoy their content).

There is not nearly enough free ships. If they wanted more ship sales in the store they would encourage people to play by dropping XP gates and fixing the mess they made of the XP grind. Then reduce the prices of T6 ships to sane amounts so people might be interested in buying them.

Everything is too expensive in this game and the return on investment is not worth it.

Its just mismanagement and all Cryptic does is look at numbers and think thats a good measure to break game features and make the game into a huge grindfest that really isnt that fun.

They have done some good things like the Sector Space revamp. But I have no desire to pay $30 for a dang ship. Im sure most of the ship purchases are impulse buys anyways and wont keep those people playing.

I am willing to buy ships. Just not at inflated prices. Having event ships doesnt affect my desire to buy ships anyways. I will buy a ship if i like it or it serves a purpose. I dont care about Pilot ships or Command ships (command ships are not the aesthetics I want to fly in so I probably will never buy them because I think they are ugly which is my opinion). If they put things in like a T6 BoP which i will buy. And more Romulan ships. I have a ton of ships on the fed side what I want to spend my money on is the other factions. Which since the number gods tell them no one plays those factions (without trying to understand why) it will take forever to get any ships on the KDF and Romulan side of things.

There will just be a horrible glut of ships I am not interested in at the price they are sold for on the Fed side for now.

That all being said... there isnt enough Free Ships in the game. There is a lot of grinding.

Retiring the Risan ships because we don't spend enough money on the game? Know what I've spent on this game? I'm not even a gold member, and I've bought:

    Atrox (My favorite fed ship)
Bortasque command cruiser (favorite klink ship)
    The Intrepid Pack
    The Galaxy Pack
    the T6 Galaxy
    The vulcan D'kyr
    the Kar'fi carrier
    A scimitar
    and a Hapax warbird

As well as enough keys and boxes to obtain a Narcine. That was the last time I ever opened boxes for a ship. I will never do it again. By the time I was through and I ended up selling keys to get it off the exchange I spend $140.

Do not tell me you're taking away the Risan ships because it dissuades players from buying ships. I may not be the norm, but I'm not alone either. You're not balancing anything out here, you're removing any incentive to bother with the summer event.

People have varying opinions on them...but I still believe that if they sported Fed skins, one would see a Hell of a lot more of them around.

Though to be honest, the only one I haven't seen much of is the Plesh Brek...either in game or on the forums talking about how awesome it is. Chel Grett, Sarr Theln, Corvette, and Luxury Cruiser all have folks out there that picture them as their ship of choice.

The Samsar is probably the most common ship I see flying around as well.

Raiders have been an Epic Failure in STO. Kazon Heavy Raider? Stopped seeing those a week after the lockbox with it came out. Aquarius? They're as common as seeing someone fly a KDF Guramba these days. The Breen Plesh Brek is the top of the line Raider, IMO but nobody flies it.

Raiders do not have the means to be more self sustaining in a fight compared to even an Escort so they're never going to win a DPS race. Take it down a few notches in popularity.

Raiders are flimsy compared to even Escorts. Take it down a notch in popularity.

Raiders are meant for Hit & Run attacks. That playstyle has not been generally en vogue in STO for almost a handful of years. It runs counter to the popular forms of flying and fighting in STO these days, and counter to what improves your DPS, if that's your thing.

And now we have Pilot Ships. They lack the built in Raider Flanking but have many other things to compensate. But if you have Intel Flanking, then that's fine enough.

The only ones that still fly Raiders is the KDF, and that is only due to the Birds of Prey.

Raiders have just been a complete failure outside of the KDF and the Pilot Ships just killed them off.

In PvE missions, not the queues, raiders without a cloak take way too long to get behind the mob that spawned 15k away from you and is pointed at you and will point at you if you get close to 10km away.

I tried the Breen raider before I purchased a T5 B'Rel. Night and day difference on ease of opening up with flanking between the two. I don't know why, other than masochism, you'd want a non-cloaking raider.

Me too, but apparently geko and salamiinferno figure that they need to lower the number of free ships available because there are too many.

I dont think its a good idea, I'm not sure it will drive people to buy more ships.

one important factor in this that has been omitted from the thread, once an event ship is earned it will be automatically unlocked for every character on your account and can be claimed for free by going to the c-store, this includes all past and future event ships.
I guessing this includes anniversary ships also.

so the only players this will effect are new ones and players that didn't bother getting the ships before so obviously did not want them in the first place.

this will also benefit players with limited ship slots who will now be able to dismiss and reclaim event ships at will.

with this knowledge in mind I really cant see why anyone is complaining.
We will be making every event ship you’ve ever earned and every event ship moving forward total account unlocks. As soon as one character on your account owns a ship, every single other character on your account that exists now or you will ever create will have immediate access to any event ship you’ve earned. There will be no need for your alts to play the event mission, no hoops to fly through other than picking up the ship from a store. Hopefully taking this extra step will address any lingering concerns you have with the overall change. Thanks for reading this far, and I look forward to seeing you on Risa soon!

It is unlocked at the lower cost of 40 pearls. But not free, and if the pearls are done away with the other toons will not be able to get it anyway.
