His original proposition: speak up for freedom of being (based on race, political stance, culture etc.)

I just felt I had to point out however being from a country that leans socialist. Stating Marxism and Socialism as the precursors to Stalins verison of Communism... is like Saying Democracy and the Republic was the precursor of Fascism. What most people think of as "communism" is a heavily bastardize idea of what Marx envisioned. Many European countries and countries like my own Canada are examples of peaceful democratic socialists govs, much more in line with the least extreme ideas of Marx.
