You'd think Cryptic would be pro-active about tracking them down and life-time banning them.
I mean, that's some thousands of dollars or more worth of bad publicity, letting them sit around on Vulcan like that.
You're serious aren't you?
Please explain in detail (without the insane hyperbole) how the presence of two characters in Star Trek Online with names you personally don't like could possibly be worth thousands of dollars of bad publicity.
I think that those two Spocks are in very poor taste.
Yes, they're based on a fictional character but unless they were made before the passing of Leonard Nimoy then it follows that they were made because of that tragic fact.
No matter who the person, death is always a tragedy. Not for the person, but for the ones left behind, be they family, friends, fans, whatever. I was brought up to show respect for those that have passed and the people affected by it. Obviously the person who made those Spocks was either raised without ethics, needs to get a rise from others to validate themselves, were raised by trash or has no moral compass. In any of those cases, they have my pity.

The names are irrelevant; the Ghost Spock model was creepy, if not outright offensive in many (non-Western) cultures. The mourning for Leonard Nimoy is/was a global phenomenon; no doubt many former players re-installed just to log in to visit Vulcan, and many newer players may have made this their first experience in STO.
Letting these characters idle there all weekend, and for all I know they're still there, is where it becomes bad publicity.
You're telling me not one of the devs had the sense to address it? Because that's the most obvious conclusion; they just don't care enough to do anything about it.
Which is more bad publicity.
Personally, I visited Vulcan expecting amplifier spam; what I got instead was something morbid.
Of all the nonsense that went on this weekend, this is one issue I think Cryptic shouldn't have struggled with.
And yes, their non-response is tantamount to an endorsement. We're not discussing a critical game system, requiring a high degree of scrutiny before making any change. A response would have been as simple as putting an employee on a GM account and paying them a few hundred $US to harass trolls like this all weekend.

Like it or not, those players are not violating any rules or the Terms of Service of this game.
Like it or not, those players are not violating any rules or the Terms of Service of this game.
Even so, it reflects poorly on Cryptic.
I don't doubt for a minute they're counting every number in their precious metrics, for every player who showed up just to log in and pay respects on Vulcan, trying to extrapolate just how many dollars in revenue that produced.
It'd be easier to overlook their necessary greed if they had the sense to address something so inappropriate. Like I said, this went well beyond the amplifier issue.
And, I gotta ask, do you know who they are? Because you know Cryptic's just going to ignore the issue, as if there wasn't a headless Spock serving as their unofficial mascot for the in-game mourning of Leonard Nimoy.

If a player logs in just to go to Vulcan and pay respects, then that generates Zero dollars.
Why would that generate any money? "I'm off to Vulcan to pay my respects. I'll be needing a new outfit... and a new T6 ship... and I'd better buy a few lockbox keys..."

Because that's entirely their business model. Get you to log in even once, on the assumption that 1 out of every N players will spend.
I bet more than a few people did buy a new outfit. I would be sure some bought a new T6 ship, if there was one for sale that was in some way directly related to Spock, Vulcan, TOS or the TMP-era films, but there's really no such context amongst the T6 ship.

f. stalk, threaten or otherwise harass or cause discomfort to another;
I would say that offending a person would be equitable to causing discomfort. I know that when I'm offended I'm not comfortable.
That's an insanely broad interpretation of "Discomfort" - you're really reaching there. Good luck with taking that approach though, I'm sure it'll give Customer Service a good laugh when you file THAT ticket

You do realise that causing discomfort in a virtual world has to relate to emotional or mental discomfort? You can't be reaching through the screen to give someone a real life wedgie.

Given your definition of causing discomfort, you offend me by your mere existence. Quit violating the TOS.
I don't always feel like endlessly grinding for hours with little to gain from it. But when I do, I choose Star Trek Online
Actually silly protest nonsense like this is more likely to backfire and attract curious people who want to see for themselves what the big deal is.
Just look back at how effective the Rakolta Boycott was in getting Married With Children pulled off the air.
Well sometimes right just wins. No matter how much the wrong side tries to convince itself it is right....
Errr ya that's right. lol
Seriously though... everyone needs to chill the heck out about this stuff. Agree with the zombie or ghost spocks or not. I think all of us playing this live in free countries. I may not agree with something someone says or does... but make no mistake I would stand and be counted if anyone threatened there right to free expression.
If your one of the people upset by any of this stuff... you have to ask yourself, do you stand for freedom or not. I am willing to bet everyone complaining not that long ago was all on board with the "je suis Charlie" stuff. Part of which was saying freedom of expression is more important then anyone elses feelings. (even though some of the stuff those french cartoonists published wouldn't be legal in a place like Canada where I live) Myself I still stand for freedom of expression, which means I defend ghost Spock, Zombie Spock... and any other thing any one of you may find offensive. Freedom wins, you loose.

Hate to burst your bubble but STO isn't a democracy, and there is no free speech nor right to assemble here. The game is owned and operated by a private business not a government and Cryptic/PWE decides what they will or will not allow.
Yet it isn't Cryptic complaining is it...
its the same people that will go on about freedom and rights to defend there own actions.

Because I was not a Jew.

Perhaps the best reason to defend behavior you may not agree with is to remember that. You can only call yourself a free thinker if you are willing defend others right to think as they will. The quotes I gave you may have been about democracy, try and understand there meaning and stop looking for one word to pin your point on.
Its ok to admit your wrong, and defend something you may not agree with because its the RIGHT thing to do.
This is not actually true:So, there it is. While Spock is fictional, any likeness of Spock is a likeness of Mr. Nimoy.
So that would pretty much be 90% of Vulcans in STO, if you're going to go after them, who btw one has no head so yeah good luck with that likeness you're gonna have to go for the rest
As well as all the TRIBBLE great grand children of Kirk that roam STO.

A headless in-game model?
Because it's not like they were coming up with interesting names.

Said no one ever.
If you don't see anything wrong with people doing that with Spock, and, by extension, Leonard Nimoy's image then you have my pity as well.
Unless Nimoy's family tells Cryptic that using his likeness offends his memory, they aren't gonna do anything about one insensitive person.
Getting your jimmies rustled aren't gonna bring Nimoy's back, nor honor his memory.
I'm less rustled than I am disappointed that people think that it's OK to do that. It says a lot about this day and age. And it's not good.
Just keep posting and will find out why it's true.
Every post just encourages them to do more.
