Here's what I mean:
I just bought the Qib Intel Battlecruiser for my KDF characters last week. I have the zen to buy one more ship now, but I was sure there were going to be new faction "command" ships released with the anniversary update.
I know there will always be new ships released periodically but I was sure they'd release new ones with the update. Since they didn't:
If you had zen in hand, would you buy a new Tier 6 ship RIGHT NOW from the current lineup, or wait and see if new ships get released? I could definitely make good builds out of some of the intel or other current tier 6 ships but I don't want to buy and find out a new lineup is released on Thursday...
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.
-Captain James T. Kirk
Ideally you should fly the ship you really want. If you don't like any current ships wait and hope for the command ship you want. For me, the only T6 I would buy is Vesta!
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
Considering the T6 will be useless in a few years with the next level cap, or in a few months with the usual powercreep, the answer is no.
Especially considering how overpriced they are.
The T6 I'm buying are bought through dil grind, stipends (LTS), and selling cards on steam. I'm not giving money to this game until the situation improves.
Remember how OP the bug ship was, until the powercreep get him, and new ships were even more OP. The same will be true for the T6.
I have 3k zen, I might by a command ship if a nice one comes out. I would not buy an Intel ship right now as I assume in less than two weeks the command ships will start appearing. Once I can compare them, I would know if I was interested in a purchase or not.
And as to erei's post, they won't release t7 in 2015, and unlikely in 2017. They may never at all. But do buy anything with the understanding its relative strength will go down. The t5u ships are still the top damage dealers. But eventually one will knock the scimitar off its perch. And then something else will knock that off too. If you are not OK with this concept then perhaps MMOs are not the best genre for you.

Well said. I was prepared to buy a T6 KDF Science but one was never given. I will use the Breen carrier now. Having free stuff made obsolete is just an ice race away from replacing it.
If you just want a command ship, I would just grab the 'free' ship for the Anniversary Event.
If that doesn't suit you, and there is nothing out right now that you feel you 'must have,' then I would wait. Personally, I believe that they will release some ships right after the Anniversary Event. I don't think they'll have the Kobali ship being the only command ship in the game for very long.
If there is something you really want now, then great. If not, then I would wait. I would bet you'll have more Command Ship options within the next 2 or so weeks.

Actually... we have 2 Command ships available right now. The Kobali ship and the Vaadwaur cruiser from the Lobi Store.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

"Would you buy a new Tier 6 ship right THIS moment?"
Yes !
And i did.
The Vaadwaur Astrika Battlecruiser maybe isn´t that good but in my personal opinion the Mastery Trait is a MUST HAVE
The Traits make the T6 Ships intressting
at this Point we got all the ships and all the Bridge Officer Layout we can possible think of
This T6 are not special at all, the Lobi Store one miss 1 Console until the Fleet Ship version is released, until then we have 1 more Bridge officer Seat on the Ship and that can be compensated
Until this day nobody gets me out of my "Tholian Recluse Carrier" because
no other ship is even able to do that kind of Support to a group.
I bought the Delta pack when I came back to STO after a couple of years away, since I had no existing T5 ships, just T4s.
I then flew the Mat'Ha, Faeht, and Phantom with 3 tac captains. Of the 3, the Mat'Ha is my favorite. If you want an escort-type ship and don't mind the lack of intel or command powers it's a lot of fun to fly -- tankier than the other two, but with 5 fore weapons also smashier
Still, if you can only buy 1 ship this year or if you already have a T5-U escort-type that you like, or if you just don't like escorts then maybe the Mat'Ha is not for you.
But I think it's understandeable if people start getting more wary now due to the first ship tier cap increase. Especially since the Devs did not allow us (yet) to upgrade our old ships to a full Tier 6 ships (even if there was no Starship Matery for it, I think many people would love to update their favourite ships.)
But to be honest - the "xyz got ship ABC" messages don't convince me that there are many people getting that wary.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
You already let me take my T5 to T5-U (free for some ships 500Z for others)
But you didn't go the whole way and released a half arsed system.
Let me turn a Lt/LtC station into a intel or command seat (500Z)
Let me purchase the 13th boff power slot (500Z)
Let me purchase a 5th level of the mastery which has an associated ship trait (500Z)
Allow ship traits to be account bound cross-factional unlocks with Dil sink cost when wanting to duplicate on other toons (25,000D)
In effect let me take an existing T5 all the way up to 'fleet' (although due to which ships are currently in the game I really mean lockbox) T6.
And think about it. Selling all those tokens actually puts the cost of an older ship fully upgraded to alot higher than the 3,000Z you are selling the new T6s for. And these arent account unclocks. And they don't require as much design in terms of the modelling and art design. They are tried and trusted designs that appeal to Star Trek fans which is the majority of the playerbase.
The one and only way I would ever buy a T6 ship is if that ship was a direct upgrade from my Jem'Hadar Dreadnought. Otherwise, I am not switching out of my favourite ship.
I am still holding back buying anything else until I see some concrete evidence of the course-correction concerning all types of rewards, along with less focus on revamping systems and more on repairing the ones they've yet to finish.
If I start seeing more of the quality Cryptic is capable of and a lot less of the monetized gouging we've seen since DR, I'll be more than happy to spend more on STO. So, no. Not buying anymore ships or anything else for now.
Hmm.. at the moment.. the main things I'm looking for an upgrade for are my Tactical Bortasqu(Would love a Command variant with a 'siege mode'), Ar'kif, and Tactical Vesta.
What we probably 'need' at the moment are a Command Carrier for each faction, a Romulan Science ship and a KDF Raider/BoP.
If you had zen in hand, would you buy a new Tier 6 ship RIGHT NOW from the current lineup, [...]
Alas I know this won't be the answer your looking for for different reasons, but it is a direct answer to your question.
No.
Simply because I got major burned on old T5 Zen store ships, and having to pay to upgrade them. I had most of the ships, as I'd often just change what ship I flew every few months. So I now have a massive bill to pay.
Plus recent ships have been appearing without customisation options. Which was always the nice thing about the old ships often you'd have multiple customisation options to make the ship look good to your tastes. I've got ships that have something around six complete skins (4 basic, 1 Fleet and 1-2 C-store). These days you're lucky if you get a separate material or warp engines to switch to.
There is nothing to buy. I already have the (very good) faeht and the (not bad) maha. I do not want the other two. I have cash in hand, and nothing to buy... but derp, rom and kdf players do not spend on the game... for some reason... ?
Neh, there's nothing I particularly want. I got the T6 intrepid, and used ec for a few 5U upgrades which has gone fine for my mogh and scimi. I'm also feeling pushed from the game, so unlikely to spend more for a while.
Command doesn't look like something I'd want to shake up my crew roster for, to be honest. Tac/Sci/Eng still rule the bridge.
hardly. Command is more team support, and not dps themed, so it may fall to the wayside for most people. It does look pretty nice for torps which might work for some sci ships or a few other builds. And it may actually be awesome for ground combat teamwork. But intel rules the bridge now in space.
Would you buy a new Tier 6 ship right THIS moment?
The answer is "NO," for the simple reason that there is not a single interesting Tier 6 ship. All the Tier 6 ships are ugly as sin. Many of the them are not even canon Trek vessels, which makes them even less appealing. However; The number one reason I wouldn't is simply do to their cost, 30 bucks for a Tier 6 ship is alot of cash.

I also bet the only way I lose this bet is if the are released earlier than S10.
S10 is, according to Geko, ~3 months away, you need to decide if you want to wait that long, or if you want to spend now and save up more for later.
