Hey, starsword, are you still using that google doc for the foundry mission? Because I found some stuff while reading the Koran that might or might not be applicable, depending on how far you want the analogy to extend; it's basically, the group that the bad guys are based on are not only beyond evil, their actions also constitute sacrilege in about 2 or 3 dozen different ways.
While Arkos still has an attitude, it's good that he's learned to bend a little since his time on the Avandar, and not treat his subordinates like inferiors for having different beliefs and customs. Besides, as he has probably noticed (and Q seemed to be driving home), there are really two different Christmas holidays: one that is religious, and one that has lost that connection to its roots. As a starship captain it would be problematic if he compelled participation in anything, but to actually ban people from celebrating would be a sort of "establishment of irreligion" that would be a path to something as bad as he remembered from his own past.
I wonder what Q's motivation was in this (indeed, in the Winter Wonderland in general), since I can't imagine him having any respect for tradition.

Insofar as I can tell, Q's motivation for anything is a desperate quest to relieve the boredom of immortality. The sapients of the Federation, especially Humans and Andorians, give him the most backtalk, so he really likes hanging around with (and bothering) them.

Gotta wonder what he thinks of our characters...
"D'trel? Oh, yeah, her. Great tragedy, really gut-wrenching. It's fun to TRIBBLE with her when her life is just looking up."
"That unit thing? I like seeing her TRIBBLE around with the universe. Comedy gold. Plus it's always fun to see people's reactions when she does something REALLY evil or says something REALLY crazy.
Plus she acknowledges my supreme greatness. This is a good thing in every way."
The important part to remember is that Q is a total d*ck.

I've actually been researching the Qur'an and Islamic religious practices a bit myself so I can get the religious aspects of Jaleh's character right (I do very much want an accurate portrayal of a Twelver Shiite). Although I think in this case that would be stretching the analogy a bit far: near as I can tell the True Way are in favor of state atheism and persecute the Oralians for being religious at all.

That was pretty much what I had in mind when I wrote him into "An Anomalous Nightmare" last year. I'd put him slightly towards Chaotic Good from Chaotic Neutral if we were using D&D alignments. John de Lancie Q does try to actually be helpful (unlike Junior, who's an immature jackass), but he's doing it because it amuses him. Eleya really doesn't like people like that.

@catrie - Quick, to the point, witty, and original. You really impressed me. I'm sorry that I've ignored other entries that you've made, since I can't seem to recall the other two, but this one did it's job and did it well. I'd like to read them if you don't mind linking them.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Here's the links to my previous two.

Super awesome, fun to read, nice to see some more religious diversity.
And was that a shout-out to D'trel there?
Loved it!
What, "attack pattern D'Trel Five"? Yeah, that was originally going to be.Shinzon but then it occurred to me that the Kholhr is basically a torpedo bomber. So why not make a singularity/torpedo combo be a D'Trel reference?

Yeah, it sounds like her style; of course, in the Kholhr that'd be cloak, jump, lightning turn, shoot. Nasty combo for an escort that can shoot from cloak.
Apparently, after the success of Apollo 11, a council of mullahs addressed the question of how to pray if you're not on Earth. The consensus was that as long as you're facing in the general direction of Earth, you must be facing toward Mecca. (Also, in the event you're on another planet and transport to Earth is impractical, the hajj can be satisfied by making a pilgrimage to the first place humans landed on the world.)

Yeah, well, obviously I had to make a couple modifications for Morgan's D'deridex, which just has the regular Romulan Battle Cloak. In game terms, given my D'D build, she sing-jumped, fired the Hyper-Plasma Torpedo launcher, cloaked and hit Evasive Maneuvers, APO1 and Aux2Damp 2, then dropped cloak and fired BO1 from the dual beams.

That is so awesome that they thought ahead that far. Certainly the "face towards Earth" solution for the Qibla is a lot simpler than the Malaysian National Space Agency solution, which was to face in the direction you would've faced from where you launched. That runs straight into the "there's no up in space" problem.
I also like the one they did in Pitch Black where they pray facing the sky when on another planet. Granted, according to my research the reason for the prostration, face touching the prayer mat, is to divorce the salat from any possible worship of the sun or the moon, both of which were prevalent when Islam originally came about.

In part, yes, his experiences in Starfleet have gotten him used to the idea that theists aren't necessarily all bad. Though thinking of his subordinates as inferiors is putting it a little harshly: true, they all believe in (to him) ridiculous superstitions, but he tends to judge his subordinates based on their competence and potential rather than on their personal views. In many ways, experience in Starfleet has made him a lot more tolerant than when he started, though he still tends to straddle the line between quiet respect for others' beliefs and the occasional bout of 'your-belief-is-dumb-and-you-should-feel-dumb' arrogance.
I wonder what Q's motivation was in this (indeed, in the Winter Wonderland in general), since I can't imagine him having any respect for tradition.
Many others here have already given very good answers, but the short answer: because he's Q. He does what he wants, when he wants, to who he wants, until he gets bored and switches to something else.
Awesome, really enjoyed it (though despite your casting of Jerry Doyle, I find it a little hard to envision a Romulan version of Garibaldi). Otherwise, I really liked the character of Jaleh, and further like the distinctive way in which you wrote the Romulan perspective, though I am going to have to remember to keep a Rihannsu dictionary on hand in future.
Incidentally, the whole situation on the colony reminded me a lot of the recent Ebola scares and the utterly stupid reactions to them (ie, people in the afflicted African nations refusing to take vaccines for fear of it all being some insidious Western plot). I was also reminded, rather unpleasantly, of the anti-vaxxer crowd, so I confess I felt more than a little bit of gratification when they were scared into submission.
@grylak: Wow. Just when I think the crew of the Viper has suffered enough, you drop something like this on them. Bleak as they are, I am really liking your stories about the Viper: you pull no punches, and the strain of events shows on the way your characters act and interact. Your stories remind me a lot of Battlestar Galactica in their grittiness, and I think this is what Voyager should have been like-- a daily struggle for survival instead of a merry romp through the Delta Quadrant.

Yeah, that was mostly a joke to reinforce the Babylon 5 homage. John Saint Ryan, the guy I cast as tr'Venku, played the freighter captain that Sheridan dared to shoot him in the scene I cribbed.

I actually tried pretty hard to tone down the Rihan this time, after the complaints we got regarding all the untranslated Rihan in Saith Daehpahr hrrafv Llaiirevha. Glad you liked Jaleh.

Don't even get me started, I despise anti-vaxxers no matter what reason they give, even religious obligations. Refusing a life-saving blood transfusion is one thing, but not getting vaccinated negatively affects people you'll likely never even interact with. Case in point, the 2013 New York measles outbreak that started from a family of ultra-orthodox Jews, one of whom caught it on a trip overseas.
I do very definitely believe in both God and freedom of religion, but as far as I care you do not have the right to TRIBBLE up the lives of people who haven't agreed to follow your religious rules. In the words of Zechariah Chafee as quoted by Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, "Your right to swing your arms ends just where the other man's nose begins."

I am so pleased you say that. When I decided to try this lost in another galaxy thing, my inspiration was to do what Voyager should have been like (hence the occasional mild dig about their reset button each week). Though not intentional, I guess it shouldn't be a surprise I've channeled BSG a bit. It is my all time favourite show. I'm sure I read somewhere Ron Moore did BSG in the way he did partly because he wanted to do voyager in this manner, with it being a week by week struggle and being overruled by higher ups. So he did BSG with the intention of doing the premise properly.
I've just finished writing up a nice little scene that follows on from this story, but I think I'll keep it for the opening of the next challenge.

A Romulan Strike Team, Missing Farmers and an ancient base on a Klingon Border world. But what connects them? Find out in my First Foundary mission: 'The Jeroan Farmer Escapade'
I think that was quite possibly Hawk's best crackfic yet. The pun on "resistance is futile" was pretty damn funny.

Backgrounds for NPC contact windows in Delta Quadrant content now show the correct image.
Vaadwaur Tanks have brand new death animation.
Commander Hugor no longer spawns in random groups of Klingon NPCs.
Episodes which no longer exist will now automatically be dropped from the players In Progress list.
Turned the rotating events back on for New Romulus.
These were accidently shut off.
Hirogen lips now move when speaking in cutscenes.
Resolved an issue that was causing level 60 players to not be able to access PvP Warzone Sector doors in the QoNos and Donatu Sectors.
Added music to the Devore Sector.
Resolved an issue causing the nebula to flicker in the Klingon space tutorial map.
USS Bajor to Starfleet Command, our next prompt is overdue. Anybody heard from Captain Smirk?

My apologies for publishing the mere scene-setting I produced, but it seemed the only part of the story that was salvageable. And I worried that if I let another month go by without publishing anything, I might give up on writing altogether, and I'm not ready to do that yet.
