What is this tides of ice unlocking requirement that everyone keeps mentioning? From what I could tell, the cores simply cost a certain number of beads, bells, muffs, etc.

If you want the warp core, the hat, or the kit modules, you have to run the even 5-10 times (depending on the unlock in question). Since the event only runs once an hour, that means you have to be online in the right place at the right time enough times to get permission to buy, even moreso if you have alts.

Wow, that's annoying but it's not terrible (at least not for the 3 alts I want the warp core on) In some ways, I'm glad I have less alts to deal with now. Thx for letting me know.
Hey Devs, here's a suggestion for you. If you're going to implement a stupid gated strategy like this then you actually need to make the gate of a such a quality that people will want to play it even if they're not going after the new shinys.
As it is, Tides of Ice is fun for a few times. Then it becomes TEDIUM.
(Don't know why I'm making any suggestions as you've shown in the past that common sense is alien to you, plus you don't really care for our opinions.)

Idea: Make a completely new shiny and gate the PvE to that. Not behind an existing item that's never been gated before. Ya think maybe that's why people are pissed off?
Wow! A new ice thingy! Play this PvE and get it! ---> That might be worth grinding for.
Existing shiny that we've gated behind this new PvE ---> Well I won't get that shiny. Easy solution.
They've done the first thing (the Breen stuff). They could have stopped there.
The decision is purely to pad the games metrics for the analysts. Offer a 'way-cool-must-have', then gate it behind ten hours of daily game play. Per toon.
Well played Gecko. Well played.
However, if you balance that out with now it takes me 3 races to get three ships per alt, I can't be too judgemental. PLus nothing screams the holidays more than snowborg.
^
He nailed it.
So they were bleeding out players like crazy after the DR debacle.
Solution. Let's add some time gated equipment and hats so players are forced to log in for at least 50 minutes on each toon during the next month.
Because the 5 minutes it takes to run the race each day for the ship wasn't enough.
If they were going to make us grind for a set part for the Breen set, they could have at least improved the stats on the deflector and improved the 3 piece set bonus to something with more power drain.
^I just confirmed it is per character, which is stupid considering the event is only held once per hour. Also, why eliminate the ship grind, which is one of the easiest things to do and replace it with an item grind with time consuming battles? These devs need to be fired, this **** is getting old.
This. The post DR game mode has become one punishing, alt-killing grind after another.
This is supposed to be a fun event.
They literally have ground the fun out of it with grinds.
I was truly looking forward to a break from all the DR grind with this event. I can't truly express my disappointment when I realized what they've done.

You didn't listen to Geko's last interview in that PO200 podcast, did you?
Wanting is more pleasurable than having...so leaving you wanting to have fun rather you actually having fun is the best thing they can do for the player - right? That podcast explained so many things about the game...
It's only a big grindfest. nothin more. It was a bad decision. I don't like the event anymore because this gate. I want to play for fun. Maybe Tide of Ice is fun 3 or 4 times. But then? And playing it also with my alts? For a kit or a hat? Stupid. I don't want it, so not playing my alts and not buying items for my alts (in C-Store), because i have no time to play them.
They do that all for their metrics (also the XP boost for patrols only in delta quadrant). But there will be a time, where you scare us away with your gates and grinds and metrics.
I would like to take this opportunity to complain about the ToI unlock requirements. I really don't fancy having to play it 60 times to unlock the cores on 6 characters.
Yet another alt-hostile decision.
You seem surprised that they removed the per-ship grind on Alts and brought back the Alts grinding through the back (or should I say front) door .
Let's see if this reminds you :
Season 7 -- let's take away the Dil from the STF's and put it in Fleet Actions !
(players riot)
DR -- let's take away the Dil from the STF's and put it in Fleet Actions !
(players too busy complaining about myriad of other problems)
This is D'Angelo .
If he does not get his way one way , he'll do it in another (or the same) way until it's done .
... now if only he'd use that tenacity for good instead of evil ...

A lot of us can be .
... see you could do the race whenever it was convenient for you ... , but the once-an-hour-every-hour grind is convenient for their metrics of acceptance of the Asian grind-a-ton by the Western players ...

This right here blows my mind. They make the alt-unfriendly 10-run gate and compound it by only running it once per hour, on the hour. Its like they are trying to control not only what players are playing but precisely when they want them to play it.
They should have called this Q's Metric Madness Event.
Is it not possible to finish the run in one instance then zone-hop and hope you get an instances that is not finished yet and got join that fight?
That seemed to be possible last night, although i wasn't really paying that much attention to unlocking anything.
Just glad to have some semi-enjoyable content instead of the same dull space grinds!
Since the devs have decided to destroy the players ability to use alt since DR this new idiotic requirement fits quiet well into their strategy.
It also might belong to the strategy "since DR players have been playing longer", so they confirm this in their next podcast.

While the Winter event had many cool new things, the new grind-hurdle for the item store is certainly not!
I like the re-design of the Breen Carrier and the Wonderland itself, as well as the new event, but with a x10 requirement for the warp core and 5x for half of the new items it turned a fresh, solid and fun event into another stale (up to) 2.5 hour grind (per character!).
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...
Just to kick an altoholic while they're down, the event sometimes bugs out and doesn't complete. Looking at my accolade tracker, it seems that you don't get credit for it when it does that. So you may well have to do the event more than ten times to get the unlock.
The frustrating thing is, the event is actually pretty fun and a good way to get ornaments so they didn't need to do this. I would be doing it, even though I had a stockpile, to get stuff for all my alts. I'm sure it's not, but it just feels spiteful.:(
My alt army: K'ymara, Orion Engineer. Caedera of Borg, Liberated Borg Tactical, Elyza Vix, Joined Trill Scientist. Christina Bellona, Augmented Human Tactical. T'Lana, Vulcan Scientist. Yazuri, Reman Scientist (KDF)

^This. I've done it three times on one toon, and got credit for completion just once. I assume that it's down to a problem not uncommon with STO's code, namely that its event handlers seem to have been written by a sack full of dyslexic fieldmice.
I've submitted a bug report, obviously, and I hope others have too. But this needs to be fixed... and, really, do we have to have more tedious repetition? Couldn't the holiday event, at least, just be fun?

That happened to me once, I got the commodity rewards but not the completion token. Then I queued for a Winter Invasion and as soon as I entered that map I was rewarded the token.

Because it is timed unlike the original snowman event, I don't believe it can be jumped.

That was the plan. All breen ships. Started that way two years ago, trying to continue it. I play for the fun, not for maxing out.
