I've heard about that game... People say the story is repetitive.
Yeah. It's totally unbalanced.
There are people that cannot even feed themselves. And others have Billions of Dollars, own multiple restaurants and farms.
The designers of that game really, really suck and just don't seem to care. They should have been long fired, but there are still raging fanboys that act like they can't do wrong and even resort to in-game harassment against even the most reasonable critics.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Oh just because something profits, doesn't mean it's more profitable to keep going. Because if a game is say hypothetically making only a few hundred dollars a month, it'd be cheaper to pull the plug and devote said games resources elsewhere. But yes, other PWE games are more likely to close down than STO, However STO does have a rather different playerbase though that can and does react much harsher to foolish development actions than the other games, because Star Trek fans have very different expectations of this game than the other PWE game title players do.
Anyone who thinks life without Cryptic holding the IP are bleeping insane. I hate to be the harbinger of common sense, but IP was already up for grabs, and all the companies the ignorant trolls. Blizzard, EA, and all the others ALREADY passed up purchase of the IP **after Perpetual Entertainment was forced to sell it off after having the license to make STO for YEARS. I followed STO since 2006, back when Hailing Frequencies was the only Startrek game podcast, and the most interesting things they could talk about are Armada mods and Second Life Trek communities. Anyone who thinks its easy to make a game that turns a profit in a universe built around peace, diplomacy, and negotiations than war are just suffering from delusions of grandeur. I cannot say the recent cryptic ideas are the best, but I believe with mountains of evidence everyone has it so good here they don't even know or understand how barren the Trek gaming universe is. I consider myself lucky to be able to play a Startrek game that isn't a mod, or a browser game, or even just a one and done JJ Abrams films money grabs.
Too many mental midgets on this forum with a bad case of grass is always greener on the other side complex.
No one wants the Trek IP, no one wants to deal with whiny Trek Fanboys.
Remember when that company paid billions for Star Trek? yeah neither do I, or all those game companies trhowing money to get exclusive rites to the Trek gaming IP.
That's why it never made any sense to pay money for an online game only.
You are only borrowing it.
It's not like a regular game you can buy, have, mod or use the CD to play fetch with your chihuahua.
Always made me laugh the idea of getting banned in a game I bought.
Way I figure if you bought STO every ship in there, level, character, outfit or item is your property period.
When you buy a game you don't have to unlock anything or waste your time with anything because it's yours, you bought it.
If they gave me a borg cube with double elite stats and admin so I can use commands and ban people as I saw fit, it still wouldn't warrent 15$
And this is where I completely agree with cryptic and their f2p model, time as money.
Me playing their rental game I should get paid
You're not paying for the game, you are paying for the experience. That is the whole point of mmos. If you don't understand the fundamental challenges in achieving such an experience to link up thousands of players in real time vs a single player game experience then you aren't really qualified to make such statements.

Exactly, STO wasn't even on the map till around 06, and wasn't even a blip on radar from WOW 01 MMO explosion to 06, and it remained a secret to everyone outside the hardest of the hardcore Trekkies. I could not and would not want to imagine STO without Cryptic.
That part is true, I am not - the rest you said not so much it did sound real pretty though.
Especially the parrot phrase you parading around the town square "paying for the experience" I can tell it's your go-to copy paste parrot phrase.
Me I like to keep it dynamic and figure things out while I type based on honest judgement so I don't seem like a mix between cleverbot.com, a developer apologist and a parrot
Anyway
2 things might help you understand it
First it's worth what I am willing to pay for it, "me" the customer, that could be a lot that could be nothing -
What I just said in my last post of what - I - me personally think an mmo is worth to me being a rental game and how I think a healthy and rational and sensible way to look at it is;
That secondly, in oppose to normal games you don't own this and you lose the right to play the game you paid money for when they decide

Next time you go to a movie theater, let me know if they hand you the film reel too, or see a play and demand your favourite actors move into your house ... because after all you paid money and you think that entitles you to everything you feel you are owed. I have an idea, how about Cryptic sends you the bill for the maintenance fees and the costs for the servers and other hardware and then you can tell me what you think your owed then ok?
1st. Ultima online. LS shard and i left it when they introduced a lvl cap and then started selling exp boosters where players could just buy 25 lvls at a time. it really ruined the game so i left. ( starting to do this TRIBBLE in this game now with the pay to complete now BS)
2nd. was earth and Beyond. i forget which shard it was but all my toons were progens. nearest to Klignons i could get at the time . but i played it till the game ended. one day playing next day the doors were closed. ( i didn't read the game forums back then)
and now this . so i am not a mmo addict i jsut browse allot of them till i see one that grabs me. star wars NOPE little kids sure not old farts. trek all the way . federation nope liberal care bears. Klingons all the way (family oriented, conservative & retired ARMY) lol
so im used to losing tons of accumulated digital JUNK no biggie a little sad but you survive. and move on.
but i admit i started lookign around 2 days into DR just because i completed the story and as a Klingon player it sucked canal water. and found E&B Emulator im thinking of trying out. and then we have Minecraft LOL i already built a none working Bird of prey just for kicks on one world. just waiting for trek texture pack LOL
Trophies for killing FEDS ahh those were the days.
A mind exercise, just for fun. Don't worry, as far as we know, STO is continuing to chug along.
Hypothetical scenario: Because of Delta Rising f***ing over players old and new, server problems, possibilities of players getting their Steam accounts locked, or whatever calamity affects STO, PWE loses a significant amount of money and playerbase. Because it's financially unfeasible to continue running the game on its servers, PWE pulls the plug on STO.
What happens to:
All equipment, items, ships, everything (including titles, ingame funds, dil and ZEN)?
This forum?
Intellectual property (IP) for STO's assets (such as the Odyssey Cruiser design, characters like Shon, etc)?
Our lives without STO?
Insert your own concern here
I find it unlikely we would ever see a refund, since that's how business works. It would be a huge shame to see a large amount of time, effort, and money placed into a virtual server only to have it shut down. When you think about it, the game seems rather finite and extremely fallible. Of course, the next question becomes: Why bother paying PWE your money if the server will shut down sometime in the (near?) future?
*Edit: Whoops, bad terms. Title should read "PWE shuts down STO", as Cryptic is just the game developer.
The good news, in that case is, people who used to spend lots of money, then will not able to waste more money on STO.
If it happen we would not see another Star Trek game in ten years at least and a Prime Universe game for even longer. After the JJ Trek being the mess it was I'm pretty sure Star Trek would be only playable through facebook.

As I posted near the beginning of this thread, CBS just gave NGames a new Star Trek MMO license a few months ago for a game focusing on Fluidic Space. Yes, just like Perpetual's license and Gameforge's license NGames' version might never make it to Launch but nothing has stopped CBS from issuing Trek MMO licenses to anyone willing to pay their license fees.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

This Ngames? Look at what they do. Most of their line up makes Cryptic look like Bioware. They do browser games and outside of ********* there is next to no real MMOs on browsers.
I will take Cryptic at their worst over what mess of a game these guys will pull off.

I did not say it would be a good game - then, again, I can point you hundreds of threads from people saying STO is not a good game either.
The point is that CBS is still giving out license for Trek MMOs. How good or bad they are/will be is entirely subjective to the individual playing them.

What I'm trying to say is there is there was and most likely will be a drought of Trek games after a Trek game fails. It will take someone willing to nickel and dime fans on an unholy level or a new story set in the Prime Universe to get anyone willing to risk a Trek game.
Unless you want EA and Bioware to make a STO set in JJTrek?

If they made such a game I would try it. I am a Star Trek fan, not a Prime Universe Trek purist - plus I am a gamer. It would be a boring world if we all only liked or wanted to do the same things.

I think the majority of the Star Trek fans would just go back to the old games that were published and mod them. There are also other fan Trek games out there. A few are in Flash. If you want the PvP experience, there is Netrek. I know that game is open source for both client and server software. Bottom line, Trek fans will find something Trekie to do while they wait for the next Trek game to pop up. As for the MMO players, I'm sure they will move on to the next MMO that catches their attention.

Between TOR, EA bring EA, and what EA did to TOR. I would have to repeat what I have heard many forumgoers say before. Let it die. Cryptic in their worst day won't match what EA would do to a Star Trek MMO.
Honestly? Why would anyone ever let a video game get so important to them a thread such as this is required?
I've wondered this myself. Why is it not common sense that we lose access to everything in game and don't get refunds when said game is taken down?
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
Umm.... No.It bothers me when people get it wrong while trying to correct others.
Obviously you haven't lost a loved one. There are several static models of grief (even the AMA has one). The problem is that my experiences never matched up with any of them. That includes the purposely ambiguous "you may or may not feel this way" ones. I'm also a licensed funeral director, so I have experience AND training to say individual experiences vary. None of these lists consider closeness to the person, circumstances of death, or the survivor's life position, mental state, etc.
You read the internets. You must know better than I do.

I understand that. In fact, I knew the answers, or my own personal answers, to those questions even before I wrote them.
This is a hypothetical scenario, designed to invoke thought. I simply planted the seed.

Well if STO was to go under, I still got many other games to Play. DC universe online, World of tanks, Warthunder, warframes, and next summer, a firefly game.
STO goes under, yeah i'll be a tad sad about all the ST fun I am missing out on, but I got plenty of other stuff to do and play.

I don't think we have to be concerned with STO being shut down until after Champions gets shut down. That games in far worse financial shape than this one.
Considering how DCUO is doing and it's WAY better in all respects, not shocked champions is going to hell in a handbasket.
