If the game shuts down...well, hell will freeze over.
If they take it down for a few days to fix things, it's over.
Fixed.
It has been demonstrated by other games that maintenance mode drives away more players than a few bugs. If STO looks like a dead game to potential players, THEN we'll have to worry.
UH, these are the 5 stages of dying, as studied by E. K. Ross, On Death and Dying. Greif itself is experienced differently by every individual. While IT IS MENTIONED AS STAGES OF GREIF, THE PHRASE AND STUDY ITSELF PERTAINS TO THE PROCESS THE TERMINAL PATIENT GOES THROUGH STARTING WITH THE DIAGNOSIS. Forgive the nitpick here, but it bothers me when people get it wrong. We live in a death denying society, so it's all I can do to change that.
And Sorry for the random caps. I was typing too fast. No emphasis intended there.
A mind exercise, just for fun. Don't worry, as far as we know, STO is continuing to chug along.
Hypothetical scenario: Because of Delta Rising f***ing over players old and new, server problems, possibilities of players getting their Steam accounts locked, or whatever calamity affects STO, PWE loses a significant amount of money and playerbase. Because it's financially unfeasible to continue running the game on its servers, PWE pulls the plug on STO.
What happens to:
All equipment, items, ships, everything (including titles, ingame funds, dil and ZEN)?
This forum?
Intellectual property (IP) for STO's assets (such as the Odyssey Cruiser design, characters like Shon, etc)?
Our lives without STO?
Insert your own concern here
I find it unlikely we would ever see a refund, since that's how business works. It would be a huge shame to see a large amount of time, effort, and money placed into a virtual server only to have it shut down. When you think about it, the game seems rather finite and extremely fallible. Of course, the next question becomes: Why bother paying PWE your money if the server will shut down sometime in the (near?) future?
*Edit: Whoops, bad terms. Title should read "PWE shuts down STO", as Cryptic is just the game developer.
fct is clear about doom thread you know? :P
what happens when the game is gone is simple, the game will shut down, a few weeks later the forum with it and the website, all instances of star trek online will be removed from reference related to cryptic games and pwe. it will be then official killed off by cbs and confirmed by cryptic/pwe and thats the end of it, the rest of us will disperse probably to swtor, and other such games to get our fix, apart from that it wont really make much difference.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Game goes **** up, say adios to everything you spent did, or whatever else. Chances you take with online gaming.
This is why I equate spending money with online games like going to the movies. Once you spend the $$$, you are not getting it back.
Exactly, it always fascinates me when people get so upset and try to bring money into the argument. This game is entertainment and you should have no problem setting the same sum of money on fire and watching it burn.
Don't get me wrong, I would be super bummed when shutdown day comes. Star Trek is quite iconic and if things like Star Trek Renegades pick up, they would be stupid not to try and tie into or retcon or work with that IP somehow. At least advertise. Couple that with STO's F2P model which is outright the best around (seriously how did that happen when we get such a deep deep, back of the teeth, TRIBBLE job on everything else?), and I think they'll keep on going for some time.
join Date: Sep 2009 - I want my changeling lava lamp!
They're blind and deaf. I told them this YEARS ago in a long post they deleted. I posted is as Galaxies shut down with the title, "What can we learn from the demise of Star Wars Galaxies." It was a list of things the devs should learn NOT to do, by considering Galaxies' mistakes.
They didn't listen. We see the result. Like others here, I would love to see them close down this embarrassment and let someone with some passion for the IP make something worthy of the most significant science fiction franchise ever created.
There are passionate folks making this game.
It's just that "Passion" doesn't pay the bills.
It seems to me that lately, the folks who are actually making the decisions, have kinda-sorta lost sight of the fact that there are ways to make money, without having to alienate the folks giving Them that money.
There's one particular EGO who has been around for awhile and is now making larger decisions, that apparently feels that his way is the best way and anything else be damned.
So much so, that he feels insulting segments of the player-base is OK.
That has never led to a successful working enterprise and IMO, he needs to be reeled back in a bit.

WOW this has got to be one of the most depressing posts ever.
Guys, STO isn't going anywhere, and you know why? Because it's Star Trek and that can never die.
There, with my rose coloured specs on I can now go back to levelling my Daha Master and feel the need to sink a few thousand £££ into the game to keep it going a few more days..sigh.
All things come to an end... STO is no different... Will it happen tomorrow? Very unlikely..
But it will happen eventually... Thinking anything else is just naive.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
I'm sure I may be in the minority here, but I admire the work they have done with the story all the way from start to where we are now. I consider it canon. I would be most concerned with what happens to that if someone new picks it up. Also I would miss playing very much.
I agree with most of what you say...except I already miss much of the play I used to do.
It has to be brought to some semblance of reason. If not, perhaps it would be better if it died and someone else got a shot at it. Which would be a shame...they did very good work on this game in a great many areas. Only a few poor decisions to cause a lot of harm.
Fix the game PWE/Cryptic...then continue the good job you've been doing in advancing STO lore and letting us play in it
Yep, I can say the same thing about my life, and yours, but ultimately contemplating either achieves nothing other than a sense of loss, disappointment and sadness, I choose not to experience those feelings and live the moment to the max.
Meh... I don't believe in shielding myself or others from things you can't avoid...
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
This, is the goal, of narrheehaw It's mission, to destroy new worlds and civilizations
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] And to boldly ruin, what no one has ruined before.
My only actual concern is that if this Game goes under... it will be ******n long time until there will be an actual Star Trek Game... I mean, ST Games don't have a particularly good track record and to my knowledge the latest Star Trek Game wasn't the overwhelming success (although I liked it, especially the Multiplayer Part) the publisher had thought and if STO is gone, I don't think that there is anyone wanting to loose a sh*t ton of money...
Perhaps you are cushioned by the buffer of time. As you get older, I am 50, you see things differently, as you realise there are less years ahead than have gone by already it has a way of polarizing what is important in life, dwelling on things you can't avoid instead of concentrating on where you can make a difference, enjoying the time you have left, make each day count and all that.
What's interesting is that you don't know my age... For all you know, I could be older than you... Or younger...
Point is: Being aware that STO is going to end eventually, makes it significantly easier to not care how it develops... Cause it will die eventually... There are more important things to do.
Of cause, if you want to waste old age away on pixels... that's your choice.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...

if they decided they didn't want to support sto any more they may put it up for sale to another company and assuming it is bought out hopefully they would leave most of the current data intact, if they would honour things like lifetime subs is another matter but providing they stay free to play and I could still access all of my current stuff I would be ok with that, the little I gain from having a lifetime sub now is minimal.
if you assume that no other company will step in to take control then basically its just a memory, all our characters will be gone, this forum will be closed, it will be a game that once was.
whether some other company will then or in the future have an idea for a completely new star trek mmorpg and buy the rights to publish such a game then it will be completely different to what we have now, whether it would be good different or bad different would remain to be seen.
the only thing I can say is I have had 3 good years of good fun, daily gameplay and entertainment, that's not bad for $200 IMO.
of course I would be sad to see it go and if I could find another game to take its place is doulbtful indeed, but life goes on. (so they tell me).
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Honestly? Why would anyone ever let a video game get so important to them a thread such as this is required?
If pwe/cryptic shuts down STO, I guess I'll shrug my shoulders and say, "Oh well" as I get up to go outside and play.
Outside - (n): Hypothetical place created and fondly referred to by people older than 40. Supposedly has direct sunlight and air which isn't conditioned. Also contains bugs - Eeeewwww! Does not contain InterWebs or have any access points to InterWebs! Which is is why said place cannot ever be anything but hypothetical.

I've heard about that game... People say the story is repetitive.

I have spent a lot of time and effort in this game, like many games before, but if it shut down, which it will, just a question of when, I'll just look back and say, it was a fun ride while it lasted, like many rides in life, and it gave me many ideas and inspirations, as well as met some friends to take along with me as the days of the game are over, and move on to the next of good things life has to offer.
But for now, despite it's flaws, I'll hope it lasts as long as it can, but either way, not going to be upset whether I'm forced out by either life circumstances, intolerable changes or shutting down, it was a game to be remembered!
*Breaks out the Romulan ale* So, for today and to the future! Whether it's sooner or later that we lose what we have, let's appreciate what we got now for the experience and friends it brings, and accept that while all good things do come to an end, That we can and should enjoy the now in whatever way we can!
If I were running the game, and I had to shut it down, I'd be saving the files stored on the servers until all the paperwork was done.
Then I'd format the drives, and hook the servers up to Neverwinter and Champs, based on current player rates.
Most likely only Neverwinter, however.
I think Champions Online would be the "canary" - it will die before STO (but whether 3 months, 3 years or 3 decades I won't guess).
But as tacofangs said - even CO it is still making a profit. Not STO or Neverwinter level profit, but it's making more money than it costs. Of course it has a smaller team size and a lot less additions.

NGE is a completely and utterly different level of change then STO has ever experienced. Even STO's switch to F2P was nothing compared to what Star Wars Galaxies went through.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
