I used to love "Alting" - IE: having many many toons of different types. Now with the XP changes and the truly colossal upgrading cost, I have decided to just use 1.
It's a shame really that Cryptic does not seem to realise or care just how much all these changes have hurt the legions of players that loved playing lots of different characters(like more than 5)
Edit: Something I mentioned in a later post : Perhaps it would help if Cryptic put in a "Sponsor" Token like the rep system, which would help level Alts faster after the first one has hit level 60.
Heh, saw the writing on the wall before it got as bad as it has gotten...they were gone before DR hit. I couldn't imagine running more than one toon at this point...
...and I have to say, it's kind of been rough. Having different alts that did different things allowed me to hit up what I was in the mood for - now I've just got the one guy and sometimes I'm simply not in the mood for what I need to do with him.
I have 3 major ones. Fed tac (too much money or else I'd delete it) fed sci, for sci fun, Rom KDF because feds suck and rom+kdf= all i do is win win win no matta what
if any thing I've found alts help more, instead of trying to power lvl 1 toon thru the story its been more fluid to lvl 3 toons alternately while still doing dailys and doffing and occational fleet mark farming
Yes... And I am getting bored as a result. I just don't have $1,000 to upgrade all 3. Being a student can be a drag right now. I would be able to go to work and skip my bills to solve this issue... Sarcasm intended.

I noticed you had deleted most of your alts. If I remember your past right - you have done it before as well, so I guess it was not a hard thing to do. I have become attached to them, so they will stay - just will not get used.
The end result of this? I have gone even more causal now that I am through all the content on my main.
No, not really. Though I've given up expecting to keep them all on par with eachother. I'll probably focus on 2-3 chars with one being dominant. The rest of the alts will be played ocassionally, mostly for breaking monotony and RP reasons since I don't expect them to be capable of doing the new flavor of advanced in the game without being geared up with reps and top gear.
Yep, my alts are now sitting mostly dormant...I'd delete them, but I worked too freaking hard getting them what they've got. In several cases, they've got box ships or very good gear that I don't want to just trash.
PWE/Cryptic...WHY ARE YOU DESTROYING LONG-STANDING STAPLES OF THIS GAME? You notice they respond only to specific issues, but skirt the bigger problems they've created.
I'm a grown man in his forties...I do NOT deserve to be blanket punished with SP nerfs just because others exploited things. While they did their "extensive investigation," I've heard at least five players say that they definitely exploited, while nothing happened to them, whereas other players nowhere near the exploit areas lost.
Majority punishment for minority infractions is not only unfair, it's truly bad business. If you calculate the cost of upgrading ONE ship/gear to Epic, it'll cost a player AT LEAST $275 worth of resources to complete.
The new "expansion" of mostly repetitive patrols, the nerfed SP, and the essentially nerfed purple MK XII gear all equals one thing...a major money grab. I know the company needs to make money...I've contributed a lot to that end...but intentionally reducing or invalidating years of a player's work is unacceptable.
Baldemort, K'Bald E Mort, D'Baldemort Twelve toons, one mission...enjoy STO House of DILLIGAF (KDF)
Every once in a while my characters are hit by an extreme case of extinction. I killed all the characters I made when the game launched after they implemented respecs for leveling up and not granting those retroactively.
The most recent wave of fatal accidents happened two weeks before Disappointment Rising was released. I had 26 characters. Now, I have 12. Many lockbox and fleet ships, fully equipped exploded permanently. It's more managable no with all those crazy upgrade shenanigans.

Gearing/leveling multiple alts is a rich man's game - rich in spare time and rich in money. So definitely getting many up to par is not possible for many players these days.
Perhaps Cryptic should come up with a "Sponsor" type system like the rep system. So that a fully leveled toon can sponsor a lower level toon. This would take some of the burden off alting.
Yep, went from 12 toons down to 1. Not only is leveling to slow to want to level them, there are also specialization points and gear upgrading to worry about. In the end it's Cryptic who loses, because that's less ships, uniforms and other c-store goodies I don't have to buy for my alts. In many ways DR saved me money, thanks Cryptic.

Oh, it was much more difficult to delete them than they had been in the past. I'd never really gotten attached to characters in the past. But when I deleted everybody but Willard at the end of last year, decided to do the all KDF-aligned thing - working on the solo fleet...buying all the various ships, etc, etc, etc - I set out to do it as what I'd be doing for years to come. Planned it all out, rather than just the random rolling of whatever interested me at the moment that I had done in the past.
It wasn't just a whim to delete the guys...I felt I had to, there was no way I could keep them with what I saw coming. And it sucked, with all the changes Cryptic had made to make this game more alt friendly tossed down the toilet like they did...meh.
Hell, I'm in a fleet with other people now...lol, I never did that...always had my own guys to dork around with and to be the goofball that I was - heh, that doesn't really work when you play with others; but without having joined a fleet I would have walked away from the game.
But I couldn't keep them, because I'd want to play them - and - it just wouldn't have been good for them...lol, this is so over the top melodramatic that it's silly; but it's the way it was.
And yeah, my posting has been a lot more resentful - pissy - douchebag - TRIBBLE - whatever one wants to call it since I deleted them...cause it wasn't easy, and I didn't like that I didn't feel like I had any other choice in the matter.
I have 3 main characters I play. And don't tend to drop them. Fed, KDF, and Romulan. Those have been my mains since LOR came out. And each one is good for RP as they have a "different" way of doing things.
I do have 3 lower levels. But I don't play them often. So they be lucky to get that far anytime soon. Right now they are mostly for banking.

Yeah went from 10+ down to 3 or probably just 1 ... depends if I have the patience to lvl the other 2 just with doffing ... have no intention to delete the others, though ... they'll just gather dust ... maybe some magical day they'll be worth playing again ...
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
Pretty much. I was so much an alter, one of each job for each faction plus an extra fed-tac as a dedicated Hero Char plus four dedicated farmers/trainers. All reps finished on all of them, 9 of them had fleet ships (KDF carrier specialist couldn't find a place to get a Fleet Kar'fi) and lots of fleet gear, and even my farmers had respectable setups with a couple of set bonuses. Old Crafting maxed on half of them. I was even working on getting everyone the Kirk's Protege title, even the ones not particularly suited to NWS. I'm very much OCD.
But now? Its just not possible. Even maxing out specializations on a single char with the new XP setups is a daunting undertaking to do the honest way (I'm kind of a jerk but I'm an honest jerk and I'm not gonna cheat my way through), particularly since you'd have to finish it before the next season launches when they come out with the next set of Specializations. Doing it on ALL my characters? Thousands of patrols? Thats just too big, too much, and I'm not gonna waste my time on something I can't win. Heck I'm not even sure everyone is going to reach 60, maybe just one each faction. They've just raised the bar so high that its not worth the effort anymore. Very disappointing.
Well - Dilithium mules is still kind of what I meant by giving up on them. I ran up 30+ toons to level 50 and at least 10 of them through the reps system. But they won't be getting any more "play" time - perhaps some dilithium grinding - but nothing more than that.
I'm focusing on 5 right now plus one more that I log in once per day to doff and craft on.
KDF-rom in a t5u Scimitard, my main, level 60 and does a lot of STFs. I also do crafting and doffing regularly.
Fed in a t5u TSABC (USS Leonard Nimoy), kicks major butt in STFs, level 55. Crafting and doffing too.
KDF Klingon, mirror vo'quv, mostly contraband doff missions and Foundry stuff. Level 52. I play this one a lot on weekends, when I am looking for more than just dil.
KDF Gorn, t5u corvette, contraband doffing and New Romulus rep grinding. Level 52
Fed Ferengi, t5 C-store Armitrage, Foundry and marks farming in Defera and NR. Level 51
It's possible, but it's a chore. The top two are the only ones that I'll play regularly during the week.
Also, in case you haven't noticed, I LOVE Klingons, the Klingon Empire, and Klingon language and culture.
I have 12 toons, 7 of which are each lvl 14 in a particular school.
I have a deginative main character, my KDF engineer, who I just hit lvl 54 on.
My secondary characters are my Fed Science Captain, and and KDF aligned Romulan Tactical, and Ferasan Tactical, and a Gorn Science Captain.
The ultimate breakdown, I have 7 KDF toons I still do maraudering on, and 5 Feds, 4 of which I just turn in contrabands, colonists, and doff from ESD.
Ultimately I haven't given up, I've just redistributed how my time is spent.
I'll prioritize my designated main, and meanwhile my 9 other previously lvl 50 toons are lvl 52 just from doffing.
But playing my main and KDF maruadering on my 7 KDF toons are my first priority. Rep for my secondaries when I feel like a change of pace, never know how the meta will change down the line.
But even without a bonus weekend I can rake in 100,000 diluthium refined/day with my spread of toons.
So not giving up, just adapting.

I haven't given up on them so much, but I'm concentrating on just the one at the moment. Between the latest (slow) leveling and the dilithium requirements for upgrading, I don't have the time or resources for all of my characters, and don't think I ever will.
If I knew three years ago what I knew now, I'd not have bothered with alts.
I have seven characters. 6 are level 52+ and cover the bases of Fed, Rom/Fed & KDF. My 7th is a level 29 Rom/Kdf and as of this point in time.. I have plain given up on playing all but my main Fed character. The rest are delegated to Doff assignments only to "try" to finance my main. I used to enjoy playing all of them.. Now I only play one. **** DR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got my Fed-Rom Tac to 60, and have most of the ship equipment that I want upgraded up to MK XIV on that toon. Still running stuff for the rep on that one. As I'm doing that I've been doffing on the other ones, so they are leveling right now from doffing XP. Additionally I've started upgrading the gear on my Fed-Eng now, but taking it abit slower, as there i not much of a rush to do anything while I'm still working on the Delta rep on my Rom. Once delta rep for Rom is complete I will begin running my Fed-End through the story content. Additionalyl by that time more of the ship gear I use on that toon will be to Mk XIV. I'm not really worried about getting to gold on them, most of the stuff they use is Ultra Rare fleet stuff that is getting upgraded to mk XIV. While on my Fed Eng story content, I will start the upgrade process on my KDF-Tac...... and work my way through it like that, to my Fed-Tac next and finally my Fed-sci. I've been leveling my Fed-Eng through R&D since the revamp. She's lvl 15 in beams, lvl 13 in cannons, lvl 11 in projectiles, shields and science and lvl 10 in ground. And she's outfitted with a whole slew of purple &D related doffs, So I can manufacture improved upgrades on everything myself, and superiors for beams. So I don't have to rely on the exchange or large amounts of EC to field upgrade costs.
I used to have a lot more toons but whittled it down to 10* post-DR. I guess the main reason was finding out how tedious the grind to 60 would be, but honestly I had been contemplating it for a long time, even before the crafting revamp and multiple piles of reputations made the prospect daunting.
*would be 9 but my Tac andorian has the Fed Targ from the infamous flailing fountain event and I can't bear to see that little bugger derezzed...
I still have all my alts, just not trying to get them all lvl'd at the same time. I work on 1 for a while then may switch to another when i want a little change. I'm not in any rush, but the lvling grind is very tedious and boring at time but have just been ginding thru it. I concentrated on my main and 1st toon till I got him to lvl 60 then started on another.
