For what reason do you play Star Trek Online?

hydrafacehydraface Member Posts: 41 Arc User
There are many facets to STO. Pvp, PvE, the episode-based storylines, even just 'sandbox' it and see where your whim takes you.

I tend to enjoy this as a solo game, but the social components include the fleet mechanics, there's time where I've even had philosophical discussions with other Trek heads as I wander around Earth Spacedock.

So what do you (yes...YOU!) consider to be the most enjoyable and compelling aspects of STO?

For me, I just love the universe and like seeing the ships and different species I've loved flying around. The episodes have some nicely staged storylines (Though WTF is up with the one that starts with you ushering boring guests to their seats at a boring conference...c'mon, no-one's gonna dig doing that kind of thing).

I'm also addicted to collecting the space-sets for some reson, like it's The Sims or something. I've delved into PvP on a few occasions but the environment seems hostile and elitist which is incongruous with the principles of Star Trek. I don't quite get why you'd enjoy the shows if you're all judgmental, negatative and arrogant. Having said that, it's hugely encouraging that there IS less of that attitude here than you typically get on the internet.

But I digest. What do folks most enjoy about STO, what do they reckon needs a closer look and what do you 'get' from the experience?

I am a life-long Star Trek and SciFi fan. I have also been a gamer since Pong was released in the mid-70s. Star Trek games are chocolate in my peanut butter. :)

I enjoy the space combat the most. I geek-out every time I fly a ship around.

Ground combat is what I think needs the most work. I wish it were faster paced and, maybe, a little more twitchy.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Why I play: Because I like Star Trek very much

What I like most about it: Although I criticize some things that I don't find right about it, I find it to be a great game. It has tons of things to do, it allows great variety and diversity and you can pretty much play what you like, when you like. It does have some repetitive things, but usually that is up to the player. You really don't have to repeat much if you are up to pacing yourself and taking your time.

On a side note there are a few idiots around. There are, no argument there. But there are also some great people.

I started playing STO when it went free to play, more out of curiousity because I wasn't really into Star Trek at the time. The main reasons I stuck with it over the years are quite simple: it allows me to control more than one character (and customize them however I see fit, whenever I see fit without having to pay cash to do that), I really like the duty officer system despite all its flaws and I like having the option to do either ground or space combat.

I was actually thinking yesterday that there seem to be fewer games nowadays (RPGs especially) that allow you to form a party and play as a group. My first RPG was Icewind Dale and maybe that's why I'm a big fan of a party system in RPGs and that's why I like STO as well. I know bridge officers are not the brightest bulbs out there and ground combat is a bit clunky in STO, but I still like them nevertheless.

The reason I like the duty officer system is because I get to collect all those doffs, of course :D I then get to send them in all kinds of missions so that I get richer. What's not to like about it? :P

Anyway, this is a nice topic and I'm curious to see what the others are going to say. And despite what some people say, I think STO is a quality title, especially if you're looking for a sci-fi title but don't want to be tied to flying a spaceship only.

It's a natural progression for me, as I was around when TOS was on TV. The movies, the new series, the Animated Series on Saturday mornings. Hell, I was reading the James Blish novels in 1st and 2nd grade!

Then came the old C-64, and the text games that followed. Of course the big game for me, was the whole SFC series, although SFC3 wasn't as big a draw as SFC2 and Orion Pirates.

STO has been a continuation of such games, and while it has it's flaws, there is still much fun to be had.

The little Star Trek ships, playing space barbie in the tailor, and chatting with a few friends I've made.

It's certainly not for any of the gameplay aspects.

Mostly because its a Star trek game, I enjoy the IP, and despite the number of people who will disagree, this is a pretty good Star Trek game ( Though I would relish a new space sim style game with trek IP, tougher space combat, full subsystems, 3 axis movement, etc)

Also I enjoy the missions in the foundry, its a great community and it keeps me coming back, ( Incidentally a few of the devs gave us a buncvh of new assets, lately so I'm rather enthusiastic about that)

As a kdf, I can pretend the Star Trek universe continued beyond nemesis.

Cannot do that as a fed in this game.
Plus cryptic never wants me to buy anything.
Should I start posting again after all this time?

Before i played the game when i first only heard about it i thought that the way it worked is i would play as an officer on a huge starship working a console or a job along with many other players doing the same thing. I was actually a bit disappointed when i found that we all got to pilot our own ships.

As far as why i play its because it is Star Trek. The game engine and space combat mechanics are clunky and sometimes frustrating and a lot of design decisions make me shake my head but its not like there is another Star Trek MMO out there.

Because I'm a Star Trek fan.

But mostly, it was good value for money (my Euro was taking me further than other f2p games I played). I'm reserving judgement for DR.

I'll guess I'll add my dime to this one.. Being a kid still inside well not on outside! LOL I like to vision my quest to aid those who need my help in space or on the ground. So dreams can come true in STO! Just have to have hope things will be better the next day you play!

    FED
    SCI/MED/RES/COMMANDO

    ROM/FED
    TAC/SWORDSMEN

    KDF
    TAC/RAMBO

The 3 officers I play and their BOF along with DOF crews are pretty good to serve with. As they serve under me. I do treat them very well with new tech gear. To me STO is fun way to relax and grind and most of all test, test and more test of space/ground gear!

    Keep on Treking! :D

I also do enjoy all aspects of the game.

Because i believed in the "Idea", not those who sell it, have sold it, added one track actions to it, time based stories to it's shows, but for the idea of what it was and can still be.

Above the shows, above the artists, above the actors who played their rolls above and beyond exceptional.

To those who saw these shows air live, to see what the height of what the human being could be, how the human being can NOT have personal issues and agendas with one another, to look PAST and BEYOND all issues of race, hate, gender, greed, STO simply cannot hold the sum of why i play and believe in the "idea" of "Star Trek" is, not it's figures, not it's ships, or it's aliens, or it's "conflicts", i come and go, but through the twisted nether of custom ideals that is it's written re-envisioned form, these, are the reasons i play the "idea" of ...

    Star Trek Online.

Star Trek first and foremost, followed by customization and then the combination of space/ground gameplay.

I've played every Cryptic game, but am not especially beholden to the company. I'd probably still play this even if it wasn't Star Trek, but wouldn't have invested so heavily and probably would have quit by now with the new monetization/timegating 'features' on everything.

Customization is still one of Cryptic's strong points, and the ability to create my own crew is fantastic. As a Mass Effect refugee, it was a welcome feature.

Ground combat is meh, but I don't recall playing any other game with a combination of vehicle/character customization and combat, and that's another reason why I put up with some of the systems they have in place.

Oh, and Duty Officer system. That was a new system I really did enjoy, despite their efforts to slow it down or make it more inefficient (really, still waiting minutes to complete tasks when I log in?).

The pros still outweigh the cons of the game, but about half of the pros are 'STAR TREK.'

Because i like star trek. But i am really on the edge to quit the game forever. I dont enjoy it as much as before, specially with all the glithes and terrible designed things around that makes me think "why i am still playing this..?". So, my guess is, i will soon migrate to star citizen or other promises out there. I am just hanging out to see if someday cryptic decides to do things for the best, not for the worst, but im afraid the road is already taken. Im just curious to see DR and the chaos it will bring, after that, im probably out lol. Its a shame, i really liked this game 2 years ago, when i discovered it and i was so naive about it, and i finally got a decent star trek game, until i kept playing and i realized, it is not so pretty on the inside..

    1. Its set a point in time where it feels like its continuing the ST universe. (making it ****ing unique among ST games, at least as far as I've seen)
    2. Its my ship, I can write it however I damn well want.
    3. It's fun to play.
    4. There's a lot of stuff to play.
    5. It's free (from my point of view.)

Space adventure games are my favorite genre. I like flying around in starships, complex relationships with different cultures, developing a character with solid basis in RP lore, fighting other players for resources, etc.

STO gives me something to do until a game like that is released.

Play this game as a place holder until PSO II comes to America (if ever). Once PSO II comes out, I'm gone.

(Not really a Star Trek fan... Babylon 5 for the win.)
The dress is gold and white. Over 70% people says so. When viewed from a certain screen angle it appears blue and black. The dress displayed on amazon is a blue and black dress, but it's not the same dress in the picture. If you're seeing blue & black you're slightly colored blind. A normal upright screen = white and gold.

Next its F2P so I can play and not worry about getting enough hours in per week to justify a sub.

Plain short and simple: I like chatting with my fleet... If I could get them all to be in a chatroom only, I would not need to log in at all.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

What reason do I play STO?

As a small boy I remember being glued to the screen of a 15" Black and White TV with rabbit ears on top and watching as Kirk, Spock, and McCoy did the impossible again this week. That small boy wanted to be part of Enterprise's ("The original. With no bloody A, B, C, or D." lol) crew more than anything. Started a lifelong love affair with all things science fiction.

It's Star Trek! I really don't need much more of a reason than that. Does STO have faults and inconsistencies? Sure does. Am I blind to or willfully ignorant of them? No. Obsessively dwelling on details and finding fault with everything which isn't my opinion of perfection or wanting everything to be exactly as I think it should be aren't things I waste time over. Because my viewpoint may be very different about what should and shouldn't be inside a Star Trek based game from another fan or player's. If I insist on having everything exactly the way I think it should be, then some other fan may not like it and may not enjoy the game any more. So Star Trek loses a fan. Which is a shame.
