What Is The Point Of Owning So Many Ships In STO?

maximusdecimus88maximusdecimus88 Member Posts: 174 Arc User
If you are a tactical officer or any officer, what is the point of owning so many ships? Gear matters more than what ship you use in STO, so for me as a TAC officer, I don't see the point in owning so many ships, just a cruiser and 1 escort is all I need, why would I need more?

No one uses default gear, all your ships would end up being almost the same since you would use the best gear for pvp.

What other stats are unique for a ship that can't be changed? All I can think of is Hull Strength.

STO really needs a pvp game mode where it sets your ship to its default weapons/shields etc, but it would allow you to add consoles but that is it. I would really enjoy this, games would be more balanced. I really hope the devs add a pvp game mode like this eventually.

Eh... some people are collectors. They like their trophy ships.
Others set up alt ships with full loadouts for when they feel like playing slightly different. For example, my main flies an Assault Cruiser Refit, but I have a fully equipped Steamrunner for when I want to fly an Escort instead of a Cruiser.

Different layouts depending on what you want to do and what aspects you want to emphasize, and aesthetically what you think is cool. Plus there are people who just like switching 'flavors' all the time, though sadly with the Ship Mastery system in DR, they're punishing people for doing that now too.

cryptic is killing said fun bit by bit.

old ships generally need a2b to be effective, and cryptic has been trying VERY Hard to kill it, and have stated they intent to do so(probably because its the only build that doesn't require lockbox doffs).

and now you have T5U/T6 stuff plus weapon upgrading, which is going to cost insane amounts of dil.

more and more cryptic seems to be pushing its players to use a single ship and nothing else.

I fly my JHDC and have several ships a whole small fleet i never use and about the only reason i still have so many is extra storage space.

Why pay for more bank space when you can dump gear you are not using into your old ships

    Aesthetics, gimmicks, novelties, bridge layouts.

For some people, there's the Pokemon aspect. I sometimes feel like Jay Leno with all the ships I have in my garage.

I tend to do that with tacs, but less with science, and not at all with engies.

Generally, it's for fun and to break things up a bit. For example, sometimes it's nice to break out the Andorian escort for a bit, but if I'm grinding marks I'd sooner be in the tankier Avenger. My Romulan science toon generally is in a Daeinos Destroyer, but in Dyson uses the Voth-specific Dyson ship.

It started by wanting to experience the different types of ships and get a feel for them so I could speak on different ships (and their novelties) from experience, but now there's a "Collection" aspect to it, as well as differentiation of toons by ships (my KDF, ROM and FED tacs all perform differently), and to avoid monotony. Plus, sometimes, one ship isn't very useful but the console itself is valuable. I hardly ever use a Regent but the Oddy certainly benefits from that wide-arc quantum.

    It's like Women and shoes.

They have more than they could possibly ever wear.

Yet insist on storing them, and continuing to buy more.

But its so cute, I say nothing. (or is that I not DARE say anything)

Either way, it keeps things peaceful.

Also, keep hoping they put into effect the command a squadron of ships from your collection.

I own a LOT of ships...many were kinda impulse buys and out of those many were bought before newer and better ships came out.

If Cryptic offered a service where I could *sell* back some of these ships...even for a loss I'd do it. I originally had plans to make all kinda of alts but after seeing how things go there isn't much I can do without all of them being so similar.

Right now I main two characters...a Rom Sci and a Reman Tac...the Tac is in a Recon DSD and the Sci is in a Tulwar...I'm happy where they are and I could live with returning most of the other ships I have bought in the past.

There are a lot of different ship archetypes, with a pretty good variety of primary and secondary layout variations, even more when you add faction variance to the mix. However the game itself does not really recognize these different archetypes in any way, it just sets objective of kill X target(s), so most players are like you and dont really see any real difference except for forward-firing escort and beam-fawing cruiser. You will notice the differences a lot more in PVP when you need to take a junker ship and make it beat players with better gear, then you start looking at how to take full advantage of the ship layout.

For me it was the hope of one day being able to use those ships as a space away team.

Alas, that is not likely to ever be.

this is where the content should be tiered to the ship so for example if you are playing an early mission where you would have been using a tier 2 or 3 ship then that is what you should be using now if you replay the mission.
likewise if you are playing an stf or no win where you would be using a tier 5 then you would have to keep a tier 5 for that.

then each mission or pve would state the tier required for that content just like if you play a shuttle event for example where it states you must have a shuttle to play this event so it would say you must have a tier X to run this mission.

then there would be a good reason for keeping at least one ship of each tier at the ready.

also there could be some content where you can use a range of ship tier so it might state to run this mission you must use a tier 3 to 5 for example.

and with DR content it might say tier 5 to 6 then for the later more challenging missions T5U to T6.

alternately you could have it where you could opt for the ship scales down to the level of the mission if you cant hold many ship types so a T6 ship could end up with T3 stats when playing T3 content.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

I still think there needs to be more stats added or something that makes a ship unique in it's capability, all I can think of for unique stats is hull strength and some ships having some special ability, is there anything else?

A pvp game mode that only lets you use default weapons in addition to adding consoles on your ship would be great, would make it more competitive since everyone would be at an almost even playing field.

Unique Stats: Hull, Special Abilities, Bridge Officer Seating, Console Layout, shield modifier, turn rate, weapon layout, power levels

also with the coming T-5U/T6: Starship Mastery Traits, and another BOFF type

I just had a thought that might boost ship and ship slot sales.
Add a mechanic for counting the classes of ships you have in your drydock. Cruisers give hull point boosts, Escorts a damage boost, and science class ships a shield boost. Ships of mixed heritage like the dyson give small boosts to both stats. And the amount of the boost is tied to the level and quality of the gear on the ship. So ToS Connie in the yard with mk XII very rare gear still counts as a full cruiser.

This way players are given an incentive to collect ships and keep them loaded.

Give the lobi ships a better/different bonus so you still want them in your collection even if you don't fly them.

What is the point in owning anything at all?

What is the point in having the latest car or smart phone?

Do you really NEED it? Probally not

It's the prestige of having it and the ability to show it off to other people

It's trophy displaying at it's heart

Cave men used to do it

Why are men so obsessed with the size of what's in their pants?
