What Is The Point Of Owning So Many Ships In STO?

I take the other extreme: one captain, one ship. Ships aren't (in the fiction) one's personal property -- for the most part, anyway, a Ferengi with a d'Kora is probably one exception -- and I don't really buy into a captain and crew constantly being reassigned back and forth between multiple ships. Plus I like the idea of a captain and crew becoming familiar with a single ship, its quirks and so forth, and feeling strongly attached to it.

That said, there are a lot of ships I like...so I have a lot of characters. I tend to create a character for a ship I want to fly, with some backstory in my head and an idea of how they ultimately wind up in command of that ship, with a personality and bridge crew that suits the ship.

When I built my first character I just took the stuff from one ship and put it on my new one till I had levelled up. Shortly after this I acquired a Temporal Destroyer (in a game of chance!). Once flying that thing I didn't want another ship, but the winds of change blew again and someone put a Suliban Cell Ship on the exchange minus a zero on the end of their offer.

The point I'm making is that sometimes people play different styles. Sometimes I go online and want to do STFs or special event like Crystal. Other times I'll go on and buy and sell for the whole night or fly about different places giving good fortune to people accessing the Cell Ship. What you get from different ships is different styles of play and the richer the experience then for myself and other players.

I have wondered the same thing about adding the new T6 ships myself. Seems very redundant to me.

I know they are adding the the supposedly 'vast' Delta quadrant (I am guessing it will still only take 5 min to cross the entire Delta quadrant, judging by fact the entire map they have now ony takes 10 min to travel across the whole known galaxy) but why add those (so far) not so pretty new ships when we still have to do the same old instances over and over and over again? I know they probably plan on adding new STF's at least I hope so, but like all the other STF's it's stale after the 1000th time you play them. Why can't a dynamic instance generator be developed for this? Change things up for pete's sake. How many times can you do crystal enmity without cringing of boredom?

I agree with the original poster that I also would like to see them FINALLY balance PvP so it's actually enjoyable to play consistantly. I say consistantly because once in a great while I get into a PVP game that seems very evenly matched and it is a BLAST to play! Much more exciting playing against human players IMHO. Nothing worst then having a maxed out cruiser or dreadnought and getting vaporized by a little BOP from a single blast. STUPID really, and not Star Trek. Makes PvP a thing to be avoided by the majority of players, and that's a dammed shame Jim.

Having a horde of ships in your hangar is really useless if there really is nothing really new and fun to use them for.

As for exploration, as long as you can travel 'all know sapce' in a matter of only minutes, passing by the same systems over and over and over, it will never truly be accomplished. Space in STO needs to be ripped wide open, it IS possible, but would take the will of the dev's to do so. Right now their will is to sell fancy new ships "to boldly go nowhere", that too is a shame. Star Trek has way more potential then that, and they aren't using it!

I have and fly multiple ships because I like each one for different reasons. I fly the Ody when I want a big assed ship that's elegant and can wreck stuff. I fly the Defiant because it's my favorite ship design, and I love rolling around in it. I fly the Gal-X because I get a kick outta blasting thing with its phaser lance. Etc, etc, etc.

Point is each ship is unique and has its own appeal, and I like them all for those various differences. Except for these new T6s, they all look like junk to me so far.

I don't collect ships... however, I am considering maxing the Doff slots to 500 on all my toons just because...

All my characters have their main ship that I use solo and/or pugging, then they each have a special purpose ship (customized for teaming with my fleet mates) because some powers work better teamed (swapping out a build with emergency power to shields for a build with transfer shield strength, swapping antiproton's for disruptor for the shared damage boost, etc).

All of them have at least one event ship that I use during the event even for non event stuff because it is fun and gets me in the mood, just like breaking out the costumes for Halloween.

All have a tier 2 or 3 I use for helping friends and strangers leveling and/or learn the game (I spend a lot of time helping newbs be less noobish, I find sharing their learning for the first time over and over keeps the game eternally new for me).

And I have a few who use ships to store extra sets and gear or to test builds etc.

Most of my ships are sitting in my hangars with no gear on them. I mainly fly the bortasqu, scim and oddy only for the different factions. Ill probably get the new ship, but it has to show me that ill love it more than my other ships .

Right now. I fly tac for one toon, sci for another , and varied ships for the lower ranking ones. Mainly whatever ship is availble i fly on that toon if they are not 50.

A bad ship with good weapons gear become awesome. Besides, how many of you created new toons and put purple gear on a miranda. Its awesome.

Best thing that goes with multiple toons= account bank. Best zen ive ever spend.

Makes you swop gear to lower tiered ships if its not bound to you. Also sometimes in efts you get dropped gear that you wont use on the awesome 50 leveled toon, but can use it on the lower leveled ones, then you transfer it. Lots of reasons.
Whether you think you are right or wrong, either way you are RIGHT.

What's the point of any compulsive disorder?

In their defense though it's hard to know if you like a ship or not until you've flown it

Besides some knickknacks and bank space, only other reason is if you like the looks, or story; if your captain has a bad case of crashing his new cars in joy rides.

For me, I honestly don't know why, but I enjoy building new ship builds, perhaps with a different theme, perhaps on a different toon etc etc.
In fact its largely the building of ships and tinkering with their components and different combinations that keeps me in the game.
I have a list of ships I wish to build and run a mile long, and my main toon alone as at least 10 different ships in different stages of build completion, not counting shuttles of which he has 2.
Across my four toons I know I have at least 30 ships not counting shuttles. Some are DPS monsters, some healers, some tanks, some just TRIBBLE and I've not figured out what to do with them yet, but that's all part of the fun ;)
Its just fun for me to build :)

If you are a tactical officer or any officer, what is the point of owning so many ships? Gear matters more than what ship you use in STO, so for me as a TAC officer, I don't see the point in owning so many ships, just a cruiser and 1 escort is all I need, why would I need more?

    Because some people want to.

    Next question.....

I usually try to get 1 ship per base. Like one with more Tac set up, or Eng, or Science. As it adds to what the ship can do over the other. However its fun to have other ships to enjoy.

Different ships for different moods and collecting ships is fun.

    this.

Drummond's flag is embarked on the Odyessey calss USS Altair, but spends a lot fo time on the Recluse carrier USS Tarazed, and the Orb weaver USS Alshain. for giggles I dusted off USS Aquila MVAE to build a Beamscort
