First City over run with gold spammers

monkeybone13monkeybone13 Member Posts: 4,640 Arc User
I'm getting tired of this. I have some KDF characters stationed in first city and when going through them to do the Crystalline Entity event each day, I'm having to report at least 4 or 5 different spammers.

They all seem to be advertising the same exact website to buy in game currency and/or items for real money. They are also posting their messages 2-4 times in a row in quick succession. Their messages are also spelled out in a way to get past any kind of filter system (if any) that is designed to prevent such spam.

Just before posting this I logged in and immediately saw a spammer post a message 3 times in a row. I went back to the game before finishing this post and there was a second spammer who posted their message twice in a row. Their character and/or @usernames are made up of random letters usually.

This is really a big problem. Please look into it Cryptic. :(

look at the brightside. as annoying as they are they mean someone at least thinks they can make money which means sto is, dispite all the "controversy" about deta rising, doing fairly well.

and there is little the can do except ban the reported ones. or add absolutely draconian chat limits... and even making the chat near useless don't stop goldsellers.

if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

Well... at least its not like in WoW where you also get scams in PMs for free mounts and stuff. When I get an e-mail from a goldseller, I just hit the "Report Spam" button and move on. Have yet to encounter an in chat Goldseller.

I can also confirm that there were quite a few gold spammers in Qnos tonight. I reported at least 1 to GMS for EC site advertisements and I ignored another one.

Jeeze. KDF complain when they don't get ships, uniforms and such. You get all of the gold spammers and you still complain. Never happy.

    What will please you people?!

In WoW they used to have one gnome after another plummet down from out of the sky and die on impact, and their corpses would spell out the name of some goldscammer site.

Ferengi better carry parachutes for a while, just in case.

I guess the reason I don't notice the goldsellers in Zone Chat is because I have it off.

It's simple really ... KDF in STO now stands for Klingon Dilithium Farmers ...

So the gold sellers go where they think there best client base is ...

    Ignore>Report>Done.

Yes, they could always make new accounts and spam again and again and again until it becomes too tedious or not lucrative for them to do it. But if Cryptic/PWE takes anything seriously to act upon then this is it, belive me.

Go to ESD, See them just about everyday, but once you ignore them once and report for spamming never really see them again.

Every free to play mmo game has gold spammers, I've visited most of them at one time or another and I can I have seen worse. Problem is they will never go away as long as theres people out there who want something for nothing. Theres just too many people dumb enough to say oooo I can get a million zen or whatever for $5 only go to the web site and have their accounts stolen. If people stop falling for it they will go away.

They actually are spamming all over the place now when before they used the mail system. This is what happens when they have no one monitoring the chat system and spam complaints.

    1. Accounts are free to make.

    2. F2P MMO's can't ban free accounts until after they break the rules.

    3. Replacement free accounts can be made faster than it takes F2P MMO's to respond and ban the accounts.

    4. When MMO's take steps to implement effective gold spammer deterrents legitimate players scream bloody murder about "draconian" restrictions, how they are being punished along with the spammers, and how the gold spam deterrents are going to kill the game.

Maybe they should restrict Zone chat to gold members then. Make the s[p|c]ammers pay, then report them.

Not gonna happen. Not everyone shells out $300 for a subscription. I don't. I won't.

Gold and Lifetime are not the same thing.

But I've played games where world or zone or global chats are restricted by the amount of time a player has accumulated in the game, either by playtime or character level. Something like that works fine without putting a paywall on it.

Even the pay to play WoW had them. They was so bad they could even contact you via in game chat to sell.

Some was even dropping bodies in a manner to spell out the website so everyone to see either floating or on the ground. Showing they was hacking into the game itself. To pull that off.

So no game is safe once they find out. Players would go there for quick gaming items. Even to the point of risking being banned as a result and still try it.

My fix to this is usually have my chat on NCP chat. So I can see what they say. Then when I'm on missions myself or in a RP area, then swap over.

I got a few in the mail and just report it. However it will be a never ending battle.

You do get the occasional gold seller in ESD still that's true. But when I logged onto my KDF character a few days ago, it was literally every couple of minutes I had to report. Worse than I have ever seen, and that's going back to release.

They promised me a Tri-Titanium Steak Knife Set, where I can slice cardoors in half and at least one soft tomato.

But thats still not all. If I order now, I get the first vinyl of the new Time Life Rock n' Roll Collection for only 2.99, and each fallowing vinyl for just 19.95. Or I buy the whole collection at once for only 3 small payments of 599.99 each.

What I have noticed is that they tend not to use "www." and instead use a bunch of "\/\/ ". There is some kind of commonality with their spam messages so that can be used to automatically filter out their messages.

Actually.... STO has one. But it's something some players will never notice. You have to wait a few hours after character creation to use zone chat in STO.

That would cause chaos. Gold is now "Active sub only". So anyone who's the new form of silver, AKA Lapsed gold, will be blocked from Zone chat.

Maybe tie it into a C-store/Time played system?

    Spend $5? instant access.

PLay for a week? Access granted.

    1.) Play gold seller whack-a-mole.
2.) Don't hang around First City or ESD.

I'm guessing all the 'buzz' about a new expansion is making the gold sellers think that there will be higher demand. I bet they were really happy w/ Cryptic's Energy Credit nerf. Makes their stockpiles worth more. GJ, Cryptic!
