Uh, the first post in this thread probably explains why.
No it doesn't.
To me, it just says, we've turned off the Tribble server for maintainence and we're not explaining why.
My Tribble server was up to date 1 day ago, so it should not need to be patching half the client for no reason.
I have ondemand switched off.
And yes, one of the reasons I keep Tribble updated is that with the files predownloaded, patching the live server will take less time as the files have already been downloaded.

Except there is a reason why they shut down tribble. And that is to roll out initial testing of DR related code. That patch is already live even though they have forgotten to post patch notes.
If you are wanting to pre-patch for weekly maintenance you will need to download Red Shirt

The devs have said the initial Delta Rising tribble patch wouldn't be anything but the code branch. We'll have to wait a bit longer before they actually start dishing out content.
Considering it is yet another poorly managed update (community wise so far, not that I hold out much hope we're being listened to) they should have released a dev blog just to explain how exactly they plan to do the whole "you're stuff isn't obsolete" remedy.
Frankly this should have been something they explained when they announced the update.

I no longer do any Bug Hunting work for Cryptic. I may resume if a serious attempt to fix the game is made.

EDIT: I know this is only for the JHAS, but I have a feeling that this is the result that folks who want their ships to remain competitive are looking for.
better get the early tribble files in just in case, im expecting a few of these files to be overwritten in due course with updated stuff. if it is DQ, its coming a lot sooner then i expected it would unless its stage 1 in a 3 stage plan nd they plan to release more over that time. who knows. 225mb just dl at 4% so far. probably expecting one of these files to make a jump in percentage and size patched otherwise its looking more like 4gb maybe of total stuffs to be dl'ed.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Dose anyone know if tribble is still down .... iv finished updating it and it still says i have not get promition to login to tribble normaly this is cause there are no toons on there from your account but i had at lest 10 on there befor the update so i assume that thay had been wiped like what normaly happens when a new test comes out so i transferd 4 of my toons over .... that was 6 hours ago and still dont have promition. dose this mean its Gold only testing or what?
To be honist what i mainly want to know (and i assume again that it is what is conserning most vet players) is what is going to happen to my Xindi carrier, undine, and other fleet/lobi/lock box/zen ships
EDIT: I know this is only for the JHAS, but I have a feeling that this is the result that folks who want their ships to remain competitive are looking for.
And the only reason they're doing it to that ship is because its their biggest cash cow it always has been.

It is just for the JHAS because it's a money maker, and if you really think this constitutes an accurate idea of how this makes other ships competitive, then you really have no idea what you are talking about.

i wonder what's the reason for all this server shuffling when new seasons come out. couldn't tribble always stay as it is now for bugfixes and weekly patches, and redshirt be used exclusively for new content?
it seems backwards to move everything from tribble to redshirt and do the bugfixes there, then set up tribble again for the season stuff testing, and after it's over, wipe tribble, move stuff from redshirt back to tribble and delete redshirt again.
seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.
Now clowns, that's another story. They scare the crap out of me.
We fight them too. Entire armies spilling out of Volkswagens.
We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending them in.
It will be back up when they tell you it's back up..!
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
What's my position?

I just switched back to Holodeck after downloading the Tribble patch and got hit with a 3 gig patch on the live side.

Do you have any characters transferred to Tribble?
I have 2 of them on tribble right now. All it says when I try to login is "Player does not have required login permission". I've tested 3 seasons on tribble. I have the tribbles to show for it. LOL
Are other people getting Tribble on their launcher. i can only see Holodeck and Redshirt.
I am getting Holodeck, Tribble and Redshirt on my launcher as of 3:34PM GMT. However when I attempt to go onto Tribble, it crashes as the 'Legacy of Romulus' splash screen and I get this error.

They've explained this before. Tribble's hardware is closer to what is on Holodeck (and hence a lot more robust) than Redshirt and can handle a lot more players, so they shift the development code tree to Tribble where they know and want more players to be logged in at once testing and activate Redshirt the the Live code tree to test bug fixes and emergency patches.
And for what it's worth, as a Sysadmin, I can tell you definitively that the process you describe is about ten times the work of what they are doing now. Copying and restoring data is a HUGE process, so you want to do as little of it as possible. It takes hours to copy database code trees in a large system, and even longer to restore backups, and there is always a chance that something will go wrong and you have to wipe and start over, so the the fewer times you plan to do it, the better. I know it seems strange that a database patch would be prone to failure since it's just copying bits from one server cluster to another, but all it takes is one table to be slightly different than expected between the two environments (which happens more often than anyone likes to think about) and you have to wipe, restore, and start all over again. The larger the patch, the more likely that it will happen, and the longer it takes to recover from, so you do it as little as possible.
The Tribble-Redshirt process is pretty standard for IT development; you have 4 environments: DEV, TEST, PPMO and PRODUCTION. Dev is back end only, so it's the one the Devs work on to develop the game. PPMO is a production-like environment for end user testing before it goes live. Test is a smaller environment with a clean copy of production that you inject changes into before it goes to PPMO that is on less robust hardware for limited external testing. Finally, PROD is the live end user environment. In most cases, you only need three of the 4, but before a major patch you bring the 4th one online so you can keep a clean environment for bug fixes while you do PPMO testing. I've seen this process dozens of times at every company I've worked for.
And if you say the words "wipe Tribble" again, it's likely you will find your car keyed by several members of the forums, so watch yourself

I am guessing before Tribble comes back we should get some nice Blogs telling us about whats due to arrive on it. Surely they wouldn't let us see it, talk about it, and then do a blog about it.. :P

Tribble is the main public test server and as a result, has a hardware configuration that's closer to the Live Holodeck server farm; and can handle a larger amount of players; (and they expect A LOT of players to come on to Tribble when a new Expansion is being tested publically.)
Redshirt is Cryptic's internal QA department test server (IE QA tests new patches on it before they push them to Tribble and ultimately Holodeck); and as a result, it can't handle the same player load as Tribble.
Whenever they start to publically test a new code branch (which is incompatible with the code branch on the Live Holodeck server); they STILL need a server using the current code branch in case any major issues arise that need attention before the new code branch is ready to be pushed live to the Holodeck server; thus they use the higher capacity Tribble server for the public test of the new code branch; while at the same time making Redshirt perform double duty for the exiting code branch until the stuff on Tribble is pushed to Holodeck.
At that point we go back to the old status quo and Tribble serves as the main (and only) public facing test server; and Redshirt goes back behind the Cryptic firewall and is used by Cryptic QA, until the next major code branch update.

There are 4 known servers -
Holodeck - Which is the live version
Tribble - Used for majority of testing
Redshirt - Used for weekly bug fixes when Tribble is in use for expansion/season updates
Mirror Universe - Internal Testing server
They also have a version they can run standalone on their computers.
