Trekradio STLV dev Q&A info dump

sethpcsethpc Member Posts: 103 Arc User
Okay, so I was listening to the Trekradio dev Q&A that followed the Delta Rising presentation and figured I should pass on the information in the Delta Rising thread. I ended up making quite a few posts, so I decided to gather up all the info here, in one easily-accessible thread. Pardon the syntax; I was typing on the fly.

  • Tier 6 ships: All 3 factions getting new ships. New class of starship to go along with the new class of boff.
  • New advancement system: "Beyond 50 level progression system". Progression in the system even beyond level 60. Specialization skill trees to add further character customization.
  • Tier 5 ships can still be played throughout level 50-60 content. Most existing tier 5 ships can be improved to gain some of the advantages of tier 6 ships. The devs specifically wanted to avoid making things obsolete. More details to come.
  • Cardassians as either a playable species or as their own faction is "inevitable", but nothing on the table for Delta Rising.
  • The rank increase to Fleet Admiral will not allow us to control multiple starships. It's still very much a "something Geko really wants in the game at some point" feature.
  • Secondary deflectors: Still on the schedule. Had to be pushed back due to resources. They're really close to being done.
  • Lots of old ships need love: Nebula, D'Kyr, Garumba, Aquarius, etc. We'll see some of those starting with Delta Rising.
  • SHIP UPGRADES WILL NOT BE TIED TO CRAFTING.
  • Being able to simultaneously run multiple R&D research projects in the same school was a straight-up bug. Al apologizes for the bug going out.
  • At this point, it's unlikely that any 3rd-party ships will go into the game once all the canon ships have been added.
  • Increasing the level cap and adding new gear helps to fight power creep because the game is rebalanced for a max of level 60.
  • Open-jacket versions of the Odyssey dress uniforms make sense at some point, as do more variants of the uniform in general.
  • There are plans to implement more red alerts similar to the Borg red alert. Maybe in the next year, those can be started on.
  • The devs do want to eventually bring back a true exploration-type feature to the game. They need to find a smarter way to bring infinite exploration that is interesting and entertaining. Not happening in Delta Rising, though.
  • Some of the 50-60 content will be held off to be released later. They have plans in place through at least the next anniversary. With a good amount of repeatable content in place, they can bring us more story content now.
  • Delta Rising will be on Tribble "sooner than you think". The new code branch will hit Tribble this month, but probably no content. The expansion will be released to Tribble a little at a time.
  • In wanting to improve old content, the devs do eventually want to revisit PvP. No time frame, but it will happen at some point.
  • "Nothing you have will become obsolete. Ships, gear, nothing." - CaptainGeko.
  • If anyone has any good ideas for the Captain's Table, let Geko know.
  • There are more than 40 dev blogs coming our way about Delta Rising.

I'm shocked they were even given some consideration...not my first choice at all.

"Nothing you have will become obsolete. Ships, gear, nothing." - CaptainGeko.

Sounds kinda contradictory to me, unless they worded it just plain stupid in the first line...what does *some* mean?

Plus it's hard to believe this especially when they said so recently that there wont be T6 ships...

I mean if nothing will become obsolete then why add new levels? Can't just make changes without us having to grind more? Only thing I can figure is because things are so out of hand that instead of trying to balance they're just going the easier route to 60 and a blank slate.

Hey, I just typed what I heard. If you want answers, I suggest either PMing Geko or waiting for one of the forty dev blogs coming to us between now and DR's release.

My 2 cents on the tier 6 ships, if someone has not hit on this already; they will be "better" like the Dyson ships are. New abilities, sure but new tradeoffs also. They probably saw how much people were willing to sink into the Dyson's in order to make them viable with all their intended abilities. More of that on the way I suspect.

Eh... just wait. The DOOOOOM thread will probably explode. And as to the part where T5 ships and current top tier gear will still be viable... I'm kinda in the "Believe it when I see it" camp. Usually a level cap increase comes with a new gear level as well. So unless this is a bit more of a Captain only boost and not everything leveling to 60 including a new gear level over what we have now... there will be rage.

When talking about the skill specialization, they brought up a fantasy setting as an example. You can choose to be a fighter, but then specialize as a Ranger.

I think they are going to give us something like what currently exists in their fantasy game, Neverwinter as far as handling the new skills and the powers associated with them.

I am sure that will be the base code they use to model the STO version for us. So to get familiar with the new skill specialization, I suggest you create an account on Neverwinter and check it out.

    I predict this:
    • T6 CStore Ships cost 3000 Zen. They include 2 extra items, either an extra weapon slot and an extra console slot, or two of one of them. They will each have a dedicated Tier 6 power based on their class.
    • Shipyard modules for ships cost 500 Zen. CStore 9-console ships cost two modules to upgrade. Cstore/Lockbox/Lobi/Fleet 10-console ships cost one. The upgrade will result in a fixed version with the extra two slots above, but no extra power.
    • People will freak out at the prices and they will lower them to 350-400.
    • There will be THREE packs the size of the Legacy pack, one for each faction. It will include the launch ships, boffs, and other misc gear launched with X2, as well as 10 shipyard modules. There will of course be two- and three-pack discounts, but only if you buy them up front, ala the Dyson ship packs.

What I expect is there will be some mechanism to upgrade our ships so that their stats and such are moved along the curve so they're effectively equal to T6s... in terms of base numbers. Hull HP, shields, etc. Which is fair enough, and they'll be competitive enough to do fine.

Will the new T6s probably have some edges? Yeah, but so does an Avenger or Tempest over, say, an Advanced Escort. The newer ships are probably better than the ships that came out with release.

And that's fine. I love my Fleet Prommy and still fly her more than anything and do just fine in most fights. Yes, might not have that razor line of best, but it's good enough. What I am hoping however is that their mechanism for upgrading our ships to being useful at level 60 and not 10 levels behind the curve and laughably fragile and weak isn't paying real money... for ships we already paid real money for.

This is doubly true of ships still on sale after the expansion comes out. Buying an Avenger for $25 only to have to shell out another $5 to make it not suck seems a bit greedy.

R&D, still hate the grind, unless they do the R&D events every month or less to help skip a few levels.

Must download Tribble again, TRIBBLE, but I need to test the changes as they come in.

And lastly, 40 blogs? Are they putting out a blog every 2-3 days? Wow!

Why would you waste money on something that will soon be obsolete? They might as well release them as part of the expansion -- it would be stupid to buy anything at all until October.

You can almost certainly bet that this will be the case. Of course "not suck" is a bit of a stretch - after all, a standard got-it-for-free no-MVAM Advanced Escort isn't THAT much weaker than a fleet version; it can certainly hold its own in PvE, and even in STF-level play. I am seriously doubting that the 10 levels between 50 and 60 will be more of a spike in difficulty than 40-50 was, so current 2500 Zen and certainly current fleet ships will remain usable even without the upgrade to T6.

That's kinda the STO mantra; they don't force you to move up, they just lure you there with shiny things that are slightly better. That's what makes the Dilithium currency work, as it allows you to grind up to get that next ship if you can't afford it. If the discrepancy gets to be too high, people get too frustrated, and they stop grinding. The trick is to keep the carrot close enough, and give it to them once you have reached the place you want them to go. If they don't get the carrot, they eventually stop taking you places.

Geko explained this in the STOked interview. All of their new stuff is in the Delta Rising codebranch. Anything they put into the live codebranch has to be completely duplicated into the DR one, and both sides have to go through QA/bug fixes/etc separately, literally taking twice as long and using up twice the man hours. As such, all major changes in sections of code that are impacted by DR are on hold for its release.

I think what we all want to know is:

Will we be able to upgrade our MK XII Fleet and Reputation Gear to MK XIV

If YES, will it cost ZEN?

Will our Fleet and Lockbox ships we have grown to love be FULLY competitive when facing a T6 Head to Head in PvP? Will this cost an upgrade fee?

If YES, will it cost ZEN?

Will the equipment we are currently CRAFTING be upgradable to Mk XIV?

If YES, will it cost ZEN?

If the answer to the above question is:
Yes all current TOP RANK fleet, lockbox, crafted and reputation Ships and Ultra Rare Mk XII equipment will be upgradable to the new max rank.
    AND,
There will be a way to do this without purchasing ZEN.
    THEN,
This will be the best thing to happen to the STO since launch.

IF however the BILLIONS of energy credits and Refined Dilithium players have spent to creat FINISHED characters is currency and time wasted, THEN you may have just given a large number of people a reason to look elsewhere for a game to play.

As I really, really, really LOVE this game I sincerely hope this cap increase will be done the right way and in no way be like the Rank 9 fiasco in PWI. I watched @90% of my in game friends, eventually including myself, leave what was one of the best games EVER over that cap increase to gear level.

    Everything else sounds awesome.

Yeah. ships from books, RPGs, video games, etc. are going to be avoided for various reasons, mostly legal in nature. Once Cryptic adds all the canon ships to the game, they'll focus on creating more original ships.

So, this means a Bortas, ENT era BOP, Springfield, Challenger, Princeton, Yeager, Elkins, Curry, the Raging Queen, the Constellation, the Antares-Miranda Variant, TOS Antares, ENT Intrepid, the ENT Delta ship, the Sydney, the Medusa, the Freedom, and the Mission scout will not be in the game, well maybe the Constellation (since the assets where accidentally leaked) and we will get STO original ships because we know how much The Geko hates to put in ships he doesn't like.
