But of course they are, its 2 years of nothing but more hamster wheels.
I recall a interview last year I think were I believe it was Stahl that said players wanted more story missions and they had more story missions planned but what happened? The Feature Episodes became Feature Episode, singular and we we got the Dinos with lazers in their heads ... this was after a stream of Grinds and yes, we got Romulans right before that and KDF got some missions but it was par for the course since Season 6.
People had enough, I think a lot of us were understanding since Cryptic was working on LoR and "Adventure Zones" was all we could get in Season 7 with Featured Episodes being on hold but when we seen the Tholian Rep in LoR that was Season 7 Fleet Actions and Nukara having their rewards altered, this was a sign of things to come.
It seems the Undine was the last straw ... and the writting was in the wall when in the Anniversary Event someone thought that we would have a grind for it, that the "get 1000 things" is now THE model to follow.
Now ever wonder why we got the Reputation tokens? Because people stopped after leveling then in maybe 1-2 characters, we simply shown in their metrics we stopped caring ... then come the "event ship discount" ... why? I wonder how many people looked at the Anniversary Event and decided to ignore it, I wonder how well did the Winter event actually gone.
Grind, more grind and more grind ... until the only ones left are the hardcore that spend 8 hours in the game.
still there is a lot i can still learn from everyone here and im willing to accept the challenge to produce that kind of show that i know i can.
What if this is not just about you ... -- or in a way it is , but it also isn't ?
Reasons :
- To me you come across as someone who currently enjoys STO 2-4 months out of 12 (and that is a generous guesstimate) , and yet you try to make a weekly podcast about the game .
End result : "I don't want to go out like Chris" ( <--- you , in one of the latest shows) -- which to me translates to you sensing that you sometime titer on the edge of ... going out like Chris .
And this isn't because you're giving voice to the negative community feelings via the IRC chat .
It's because (what I perceive) as how you feel .
Which is why , when I look at the quote above , I look at something that may not work . You can produce better shows , but you have to like the material of the show first .
If you don't then that will shine through ... , as that is the kind of person you are .
You're honest , in your own way .
- Now that I've talked about you , how about if I talk about why I think that this is not just about you :
Both of your past co-hosts would admit that STO is no longer their primary game .
That too shows ... , and I don't mean any offense by that .
Now let's look much further around , to the other STO Podcasts in the last 6-12 months :
P1 had one co-host leave .
Deck Eight (a UK STO podcast) , ended .
Red Shirt Army , ended / on hiatus .
Tribbles in Ecstasy had more host changes then any podcast I've listened to , with hiatuses in between .
If I add to that the (non-podcast) folding of Massively's STO column ... -- then all of it just points to one direction : things are not really going all that well ... as far as the community is concerned ... so this is the part that "it's not just you Mav" .
(not that I expect that to be much of a comfort)
Now I could shoot my pet theories at you , about how everything in this game is now being sacrificed for the expansions and Lockboxes , but those are theories at best , and not really helpful as far as the future of STOked is concerned .
My suggestions :
- Make an honest (to yourself) list with the title : how will I prevent going out like Chris (and do I even want to) ?
- Weigh how much it means to you being "head honcho" on a podcast VS the benefit of not having to "carry a show" who's topic excites you less and less .
- If you decide on merging with another podcast , look further around , as P1 is not the only show in town (only the main Cryptic mouthpiece :P -- which does not necessarily translate to a healty show) .
... them be my annoying thoughts ... between one missile raid siren and the next .
They've always been bad at marketing. Part of it is they don't communicate well with each other, let alone the people they've used to do marketing. Now they have devs on podcasts doing the marketing.
It's bad because it's a terrible marketing plan. Through and through.
They could at least try and use some professionals to do marketing. But that would require communication, a budget, stuff like that.
Given that no dev will show up without softball questions is not the podcasts or host's fault.
Wait, in this particular case wasn't it the other way around? The dev approached the podcast? That should have given the podcast leverage.
Granted I'm an old school journalist who studied it in school way back when people thought the internet was a series of tubes.
But still ...
If someone asks me for my time, I don't feel obligated to cowtow to their deamands for softball questions. You come to me, you answer my questions. Or we just go do a podcast about how to farm dilithium or something.
It was interesting he touched on the subject of power creep and he did say it would be a non issue soon and was being looked at, what that means we will have to wait and see
Wait, Massively dropped the STO column? Huh, I was unaware.
OK , correction :
Massively dropped the STO column by Terilynn Shull .
From what I remember there was a cut in salary for the Bloggers and she offered to step away as to not hurt those who did this for a living .
(or something like that)
It seems that the Captain's Log is now back on Massively (for 2 months in a row) , but the new version of Captain's Log is not exactly up to date , the first one covered S.9 , the second one "One Year since LoR" (no S.9.5) .
I also don't remember any coverage of these new Captain's Log's on the Cryptic forums .
I do not think there was any scandal about her departure. I completely approve of her parting gesture. Terilynn talks about her last Massively article on her show.
1hr59m he talks about power creep, I asked 3 times throughout about it and got an answer
Re-watching that part
He says they try and make the ships balanced with one another but pushes some to make them stand out.
Power discrepancy is a thing, he does not think its a "power creep"
They are aware there is a power issue and it "will be very much a non issue soon, or less of an issue
One way to address it is to have more meaningful elite content, different levels of content
He acknowledges there is a problem and they are addressing it
When we're talking about a person who Tweets negatively about his playerbase , who says "where's the feedback" after the UI got feedback on Tribble and on Holodeck , and a person who says "there's your exploration !" -- trolling not only the crafters but those for whom the removal of the star clusters exploration was a sore issue ... .
Al Rivera is anything but a seasoned professional .
- I was also disappointed with STOked not doing their homework .
Starting to look for the first time for Doff UI player feedback on a "player driven community show" -- when the feedback was there for weeks & ignoring or not seeing the stuff offered in the chat and then declaring "I like it" -- that is neither "semi-professional" (which is the best we can expect from podcasts) nor "community driven" .
Also , claiming to have received too many questions via email , but then taking the time for that ridiculous trivia game ... -- all I'll say is that that is wasting Dev time , that could have been used to answer more questions .
All in all I physically tuned out when the trivia started .... , but mentally I shut down when the "there's your exploration !" bit came off .
Al Rivera does not like to be trolled ?
Then maybe he should extend the same courtesy to others .
That's where "professional" starts and overgrown man child ends .
... but all this does not matter , as as long as the Lockbox money keeps flowing , Cryptic can put dancing monkeys into STO (twice) and all will be well for them ...
I guess that by this time , from their POV there is little difference between the dancing NPC monkeys and the playerbase .
An anthem for all of those that have grown weary of good for nothing freeloading pinheads, and demand for themselves their long fought for independence from the tyrannical commands of mediocrity.

Holy sh. Might indeed something radical happening on the next expansion.
Just letting everyone know im still watching how this thread unfolds and still listening to everyone's take
My advice is to consider looking into some journalism tips. At the very least some of it will help improve your overall interview process.
Tossing softballs is ok, but start to find ways to get at the more meaty and substantial topics.
Continue to build your own rep and integrity. And eventually your work becomes a source of value and people come to YOU. At that point you have far more leverage and don't have to put up with people demanding you avoid this question or that topic.
When they want something from you, which in the case of your podcast would be added marketing and exposure, then there is a lot more give and take.
It's a slow road, but overall the destination is much better.
If I could suggest something; I recommend that if you have the time (I know it's time consuming) Mav, you might want to edit the episodes more heavily. They tend to be pretty long, and some of the banter can be cut out. Basically, it just needs some tightening for the people who don't watch it live because they want something more concise.
If Geko is going to whine and cry about how difficult things are and is tired of the "ranting" (see: lumping legitimate feedback with the brats), then maybe he should find someone who can do the job, because he *clearly* is not up for it.
1) R&D levelling needed to be more time consiming, but the XP gains are a pittance, and the amount of XP you need to earn at higher levels are the definition of insanity.
2) Stop creating more dilithium sinks when we have WAY too many already!. Either that, or allow us to refine more than 8000/day.
3) TheUI is ludicrous. Why do we need to click a select button more than once per Doff mission (you know, like BEFORE they wrecked the Doff UI).
Geko did a really poor job, and didn't listen to feedback. Negative attention is a bad thing, Geko. I make no apologies for being harsh. If anything, I think I've been more than fair!

Assuming that this is the record of the stream http://www.livestream.com/stokedradio/video?clipId=pla_c98aedc6-aca1-4568-9212-678523fcda00&utm_source=lslibrary&utm_medium=ui-thumb at which mark did he say that exactly? I skimmed trough it and the only thing to power gain I catched was that he does not think much of it as a problem since not all of STO is just pewpew.
Yeah, what is this all about?
Source? Was there an announcement or something?
