Are we overreacting much?

Honestly, this is the biggest question I have to ask: are we actually sitting here, throwing fits and declaring PWE and Cryptic are greedy [REDACTED]s because of a DOFF system? Because of the removal of the Star Clusters? Because they're a game company and they need money to keep going?

Seriously, I've been looking at posts for the past few hours and I'm sitting here seeing people saying that they were going to quit because of the DOFF UI. The DOFF UI, people. It's a little unwieldy, yes, but the way you guys are acting, it's if opening it up causes you guys physical harm.

Have we, as a community, fallen so hard that we have to pitch fits over the smallest things like every other game out there? I came here August 2013, just after the last Risa event and it wasn't this bad. A year later, it's like... I dunno how to describe it, but it's bad and it's embarrassing.

I used to like coming to the forums from time to time. Not anymore. Sure, go ahead, call me out on my own ironic complaining, but at least I'm not rage quitting over a piece of code. If you guys want to quit over it, fine. Go ahead. No one's stopping you. But don't quit over something petty.

To answer the question: Yes. Everyone overreacts. I've seen it on so many MMORPG Games. And I don't care if I get burned, I rather like the updates they're doing. Except the oddball uniform colors but that's easily fixed by myself in the tailor.

If they wanted to make money, they could eliminate the Dil-Zen conversion...or make it Zen to Dil only.

I believe there were plenty of player ideas...mine was a Ferengi Casino.

What may be petty to one may not be petty to another. We do not get to decide what is petty for others or not. Sure, I might /facepalm some of the complaints - but it is not my place to call them petty or tell them they do not have the right to complain. I am sure folks have broken out their fair share of /facepalms over things that I have complained about as well.

There is a bit of sample bias here. The people who are enjoying the update are spending all their time enjoying it. With few exceptions, only the people who have very negative reactions will take the time to come and voice them.

It's not just a little unwieldy, it's extremely difficult to use if you have any desire to choose your own DOFF for any reason. The old system was vastly superior in every way.

Welcome to the forums. Leave your sanity at the door.

I do agree that selecting your own DOff is clunky as hell though.

No, it's not overreacting, at least not in the case of the new doff UI. Like many others I tried really hard to find any good points to it when it was first put on tribble but I just couldn't. It's not just a step backward in functionality, it's more like being hit by a car and sent flying back then crashing to the ground in a mangled heap.

It's literally something I'd have expected to see in a beta version before it was eventually improved into what we had previously.

Of course people are bothered by the UI, pretty much everyone hates it. The old one was pretty much perfect.

People are angry at Crafting, because it's not crafting and they added tons of monitizing that makes people uneasy, it gives the appearance of F2P than an the alternative that it is. And of course, nobody likes how Crafting is nothing but a randomized gambling, where you don't know what you are going to get. You think you're doing ESTFs for the VR mats, but walk away with nothing. You don't know what you are going to get when making the crafted item.s

In short, it's not crafting at all.

The rest, the bugs are understandable.

So what is Star Trek Online about?

Not what the TV shows were about that's for sure...

We are into year five of this game's live status. And we are no closer to having a game that even pretends to attempt to be true to the IP it is based upon. Oh sure... the featured episodes sort of try to do that. But once the story missions are done, what effort does the game put forth to present a true-to-trek experience?

Well... in Cryptic's defense... they did set the game in a time of war. We are going to be expanding into the Delta Quadrant with the next expansion, but...

I believe Captain Sulu in the intro to Starfleet Command vol. II said it best.
The galaxy is in a state of general war and chaos. It is a dark time for us all. But... Adversity breeds inovation. And the Federation will not fall without a fight.

    No we're not overreacting much.

We have a "Tribble Server" that's ostensibly there to test things. As SOON as the new Doffing UI was there, the detailed, constructive criticism came. Yet they did nothing and didn't even acknowledge it until the evening before release.

So yeah - whats the use of a test server if you're not going to encourage feedback or listen to the people testing for you?

It's about communication. If there are steps in the Q/A process they have that slowdown actually acting on any feedback from tribble, then please elucidate us, Cryptic.

The thing is, many of us here are waiting for PWE to actually give a damn about the Star Trek IP and actually take steps to actually strive for the awesome potential this game has had from the very beginning.

They have done everything with this title except try to actually make it more than just a generic MMO with a star trek skin stretched so tight over it that that it's starting to rip all over the place.

Star Trek is many different things to many different people. And yet there are many quantifiable elements that are fundamental to what Star Trek is on a basic level. To name a few, the Enterprise charter as quoted by William Shatner and Patrick Stewart sums it up pretty well:

    - To explore Strange New Worlds
    - To seek out new life and new civilizations
    - To boldly go where no man/one has gone before

If they would build the premise of STO around these three elements, then in my opinion it would make for a much better game. But as of today's season 9.5 update, they've moved further away from the core premise of Star Trek.

Yes, I know that DS9 didn't follow those 3 core elements. However the station, positioned near the mouth of the wormhole to the unexplored Gamma quadrant presented the opportunity to look at a galactic crossroads installation supporting the effort of countless ships on their way to do those three things. It also presented a great opportunity to look at the political environment of the Star Trek universe as it deals with a growing threat from

Voyager actually upheld the core charter roles while adding a 4th objective:

    - To look for a way home while doing these things

Enterprise followed the core charter elements, even though it did not use the monologue.

So what is Star Trek Online about?

Not what the TV shows were about that's for sure...

We are into year five of this game's live status. And we are no closer to having a game that even pretends to attempt to be true to the IP it is based upon. Oh sure... the featured episodes sort of try to do that. But once the story missions are done, what effort does the game put forth to present a true-to-trek experience?

from my perspective, very little effort at all.

Oh, but we get all sorts of new grindfests to keep us busy while waiting for the next update that will bring yet more grindfests...

If they would actually TRY to make the game fundamentally true to Star Trek, then maybe I would be encouraged to spend some money on it. But to me, it's a big joke.

This is an excellent way of expressing my annoyance with the removal of exploration and diplomacy along with the butchering of the DOFF system. Yeah, exploration and diplomacy weren't perfect, but they threw the baby out with the bath water, and like you said, they've moved further away from the core principles of Star Trek.

I'm not just one to complain about every update, either. I really enjoyed the latest feature episode, as it felt like the closest they had come to capturing the feel of a big season finale from one of the shows, particularly some of the Dominion War episodes from DS9.

It also genuinely irritates me when I see people say "why are you complaining about this?" Because I LIKED these features. Just because they weren't a big deal to you doesn't mean that we're "overreacting." I don't care about crafting, for instance, but obviously that doesn't mean that I think people are wrong to complain about the changes.

At least one thing came out of the 9.5 testing. We got a slider to convert up to 100 of the old mats into new ones, can you imagine what it'd be like for those of us who had thousands of mats to convert if we were stuck doing it one at a time?

But yeah it feels like most tribble feedback is straight up ignored.

monitizing, please look up that word... cause I just crafted for two hours and haven't payed a dime, and don't plan on paying anything ether. I gamer of the old school I can handle a little grind.

old doff was functional and thats pretty much it. the new one while not as good as the old is not the evil demon people make it out to be. and if/when they get around to adding sorting back it'll barely be a change at all.

p.s. the whole game is ftp. please look up what that means.

if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

I actually prefer the new Doff UI. I can easily determine the rewards and requirement of each assignment at a quick glance instead of having to click on each assignment to get that information.

MMO Companies are forced to do certain changes based on what future content they will add. Cryptic makes plans based on content that will take months or even years before we ever see the reason for it and we can only just in front of us. So players do overreact, but some of this overreaction is due to people not having all the information that the devs currently have. Of course, some players will always overreact even if this is good reason for it. As an example, Cryptic is giving us free C-Store stuff so we must overreact.

Thank you for the troll bait .
Allow me to not respond in kind :

    1) When Cryptic's UI artist get's feedback on Tribble and instead of acting on it goes off to make the Odyssey uniforms -- something's wrong .

    2) When the whole major point of Season 9.5 -- the Crafting system -- depends on said UI , and this is the behavior @ Cryptic -- something's wrong .

    3) When everything that was complained about on Tribble goes live & ppl are displeased -- then a Dev (Hawk) shows up to tell us that they are "working on some stuff for the UI" -- something's wrong .

But you know what , you got it in one whit your last line ... -- just not the way you think .
See ... , we've come to the point where it really does not matter what Cryptic does as long as the Lockbox sells .
They know it ... , and more and more of the players know it .

Thus imagine this : no new Doff UI , no new crafting , no new Oddesy uniforms , no Season 9.5 .
    Just a Lockbox .

... and we would be pretty much where we are now ... , except no players angry about the UI , about Memory Alpha , about the Star Clusters , about one more Reputation disguised as a Crafting system .

In the end , more happy players .
But my point is that the very money you claim they "have to make" (and you're right about that part) -- has allowed Cryptic to go off the deep end and embrace "substandard" in a spectacular fashion that the word "revolting" does not begin to cover . :(

    Yes.

Sometimes it's justified, sometimes it's not. But in my opinion 99% of the time it's always blasted way out of proportion.

In my experience sometimes, rarely but sometimes, a 'thing' does get looked at if the noise after release is loud enough. But most of the time it doesn't, usually once Cryptic reply to the outcry via a post from a developer that goes along the lines of 'working as intended' it stops there regardless of the noise being made. So players accept and adapt and before long you never hear of it again.

Of course there are a select few who will choose to never let a certain 'thing' go, and this is why the forums smell like dead horse all the time.

Indeed. If they only communicated with us. It's like they are sitting there appearing to be taking notes going "uh huh", but really was doodling on that notepad drawing.

And makes me how much of their budget they wasted in making most of these unpopular changes? Imagine how much money if they worked with the community to ensure that they properly implemented what the community wanted in the first place. I mean it worked nicely with LoR didn't it? They got tons of feedback and tweeked it to near perfection! And it pretty much was STO's finest moment!

But then they dropped the ball with Season 8, and said they were losing money because too many were on Tribble...........and look at were we out now.

They ignored all feedback on the UI and how people hated it. And 9.5 went live, even more people hated it........

They didn't have to close Memory Alpha, they could've kept those Diplomatic Missions and the Vendors (it was common trash anyhow). And Memory Alpha could've become a Roleplay zone or kept as a Foundry entrance. I mean by their logic they would've gotten rid of Vulcan and Andoria since they had less function, but they remain in the game. (They better stay in the game.)

Star Clusters......eh well I can understand nobody liked them. Even after 4 years I couldn't play those horrible missions. But still it was optional content that gave players a nice diversion from "the grind". Personally, I am very happy that the accolades is just DOFF Mission counters now, so I can live with that. Though I do like Exploration to return, but this time as REAL exploration.

Devs, all you have to do is work with your players. Don't just write down their wants, but understand those wants and work with them to make the most of that want. And for cry'n out loud - play the game and understand the players, you know you can interact without telling them who you are.

A lot of it is perfectly justified, especially when it comes down to dev and player communication, lack of communication can annoy the hell out of people, especially when we raise issues on tribble for example and they never get fixed.

Though granted, there's also a lot of idiocy on the forums and I sometimes will just not bother reading a thread if it is apparent that's the way it is going, which is a shame because there are some forum users who ought to know better but they apparently don't.

I do realise a LOT of game forums are like this, but that shouldn't mean they have to be.
Ten soldiers wisely led will beat a hundred without a head. - Euripides
I no longer do any Bug Hunting work for Cryptic. I may resume if a serious attempt to fix the game is made.
