I want it to be a game of exploration and random events. I want on ship missions and poker nights.
What it is currently is just a dil grind. This type of model does not support long term play. It supports massive player churn. I know grinding is just the way of mmo's, but here it seems more of a grind for grinding's sake with no real payoff.
I've cut down my play to about 1 hour a week and don't bother with boxes or dil any longer.
It's late and I think I've had too much to drink.
Same here I guess. I know STO is not a Star Trek sim, but I do try and play it as one regardless of the intentions of the devs. That's mostly why the removal of the exploration clusters is ticking me off so much; it may not have been very good, but it's simple presence made me feel more at home in the game.
A lot of Star Trek fans hoped for some kind of consistent online Trek "simulation" like 25th anniversary/A final unity, Bridge Commander and Elite Force combined. But that's neither what this game is nor what it's tryiong to be. It's a casual arcade MMO with Star Trek memorabilia and traits found in social network games.

... which is sad.

I said it in another thread somewhere: All Star Trek games that were worth something (read: worthy of the name. I'm still around to play STO, although there's really no justification to use that license. The setting of STO could be anything) are by companies that don't exist anymore. That should tell you something...

Is this thread what STO is to you or what you wish it was because it reads like the latter. This game scratches my Star Trek itch. It is at its best when it is creating missions like LOR or the FE series. I am starting to tire of the grind and took my first long break from the game a few months ago. I think a big problem is aside from two fantastic feature episodes, it feels like story content is been pretty dried up with season 9. Season 9 has been all about system revamp and grind which is not at all exciting. I hope the 2nd expansion is as good as LOR because LOR was awesome. That and the Dominion Feature series are my favorite parts of the game. The grind part, including Risa, is starting to wear me down.
STO remains the best current Star Trek game, despite the constant efforts to push the Star Trek elements away. All the elements that made the shows are here, you just have to search them out and deliberately move away from the one-track DPS is all path the game sets.
Unfortunately, the way STO is set up means any productive use of time has to be spent doing the same stuff over and over again, and the parts most Trek-like reward the least...
STO is a pretty flower, STO is the scent of the first rain of the spring, STO is the look your true love gives you when you wake up in the morning.
The STO forums on the other hand are typically three threads away from making the waiting line at the DMV seem like an enjoyable experience, and constantly reaffirms to me why the rest of human society generally agrees upon the idea of Star Trek fans being among the worst our species has to offer the world.
STO is relaxing, mental wallpaper. It is not the thing that I do to prove my manliness or stretch my horizons, and I worry for the small element of the forum that apparently see it that way.
I can wargame as a Klingon or Gorn, fight glorious battles on behalf of the Empire and Hegemony, follow a storyline, and it doesn't cost me a penny.
STO is not perfect but it's as good as can reasonably be expected, given that it's got to walk a tortuous line between hardcore Trek fans, rabid gamers and a casual majority, while making a profit in the process. It's a compromise where there are some things I don't like but a lot that I do.
I don't think it's a coincidence that despite Trek's fairly cerebral nature, most of the games based on it have been wargames, with the exception of the pen-and-paper RPGs like FASA's. That sort of RP does not translate well into an online environment with thousands of players.
Anyway, over three years playing I've developed a quartet of characters that I have some affection for, each embodying a facet of the Trek-verse I like; a dour, ruthlessly efficient Klingon engineer, a scheming Gorn scientist / politician, a heroic 22nd-century Starfleet captain, and an exuberant Klingon Warrior-Philosopher. Their crews and ships reflect those archetypes and it's just fun to keep them ticking over.
What is STO to me? A way to scratch my Star Trek itch. A way to spend a pleasant hour or two away from the Real World.
Is it "Real" Star Trek? I dunno. It's good enough for me. Because I do not allow myself to treat Star Trek or an MMO as some sort of religion. Which is not healthy and may very well be the sign of needing some professional help.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
same here, it is neither the greatest nor the worst Star Trek game, but it is good enough and enjoyable.
On the other hand, if it wasn't f2p, i wouldn't be playing anymore. Bought the game in 2011, because i found a collectors edtion and 5 prepaid cards for 20 euros at a shop. So i gave it a try despite the awefull ratings.
Otherwise i would have startet playing with f2p i guess.
now a just play because i "need to scratch my Star Trek itch" but i hardly ever stick around for more than 1 hour per day. Actually a healthy way to play a MMO.

Clearly, you aren't a "Real" Star Trek fan.

Actually I've gone to the new Swordsman game which is quite amazing.
But honestly I would like to see the game get back more on the Trek track of finding new worlds, interacting more with your crew, fun stuff that a ship does out of port.
Hopefully the new expansion will have this in mind.

I agree with you in regards to Star Trek online, it is an enjoyable game if you can overlook a few things here and there.
For me STO is a prime example of a IP getting misunderstood.
There where many good and bad Star Trek games in the past. But only very few accomplished to create a real Star Trek feeling. But sadly most games where just combat simulators or strategy games, while it would make much more sense to create some adventure or open world RPG games.
For me STO is first and foremost a example of a IP squeezed into the wrong format.
Trek was always about one ship, one crew. Adventures took place 75% INSIDE the ship. It was filled with sense of wonder and moral issues.
Massive fleet actions War and killing thousands and where just exception. Such a game would make much more sense with other IPs like BSG or Star Wars.
(Not to speak of a completely wrong representation of the main characters of Star Trek: the Ships.)

What is STO to you?
It's a facebook time-waster with a Star Trek skin. Any claim that it's anything more is fanboy devotion giving it more than any actual implementation of it ever deserved.
sto to me was like a blind date.. I had my expectations set high based on the hype that surrounded it before launch. (ie, all the promises made almost everysingle time anyone talked about it, ie, online interviews, conventions, etc. that this game was going to be very canon, and raise the bar of every other game released, that it was going to be an extension of the universe cbs had created).
instead, I buy the game, (go on the blind date) and boom, lots of disappointment. sure there are elements of the game that are cool. but they chose to make a "Star Trek" game, and in doing so have completely missed what "Star Trek" is about.
to me Star Trek was about exploration, and Gene's vision of the future. a future without currencies, a future where we ask questions and try to find a peacefull ending before we attack or destroy. a future where expanding our knowledge was our driving force.
instead, I got a star trek combat simulator.. literally, 99.9% of the game is combat oriented, and cryptic didn't even give the vision of star trek a reach around. lol.. combat would be excusable if we fallowed the prime directive, ie, we don't fire until fired apon, or have clearance to do so. half the time you warp in, and you destroy destroy destroy with little thought as to what you are doing.
im not saying there should be no combat, but.. there should be more missions like the breen missions where you have the choice to do something other than attack. that is what encounters are to me in trek. sure, I like firing my phasers and dropping torpedoes on someone too, but not every single time I do a mission. I want to "think", which is not something you have to do at all to play this game. its actually pretty mind numbing.
also, with the amount of death and destruction you cause, it should have bearing on the story of the game. ive literally ran into enemy npc's that when you interact with them talk about how the federation is all talk and no action.. UMMM ARE YOU KIDDING ME lol.. all I do is blow **** up.. id say from my perspective, the federation is shoot first ask questions later now. lol..
ill give them this, the game is a good combat simulator, it is a good resource for all things sci fi, cause they focus more on turning the game into a star wars/back to the future/ stargate / jurrassic park simulator that looks trek, than actually making the game a trek game.
need more proof that they really just don't care about star trek and what it is to people.. look at the romulan fraction...

its high point? old stf's.
its low point? crossfire, season 8, grinding and crafting (its dead jim). they took the old stfs out.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

A perfect example of a massively wasted opportunity and potential.
