Federation Shipnames

Hi all,

So I recently updated an old thread I wrote on UFPlanets.com with a list of ship names to help people when trying to find authentic ship names that they might want to use and I figured I would share the love as it were and post the list here for anyone that wanted to use it.

If you feel this might be of use to you then please feel free to use it, if you don't then feel free not to :D

Just as a heads up I have split the list in to two, one list of canon ships (ships seen or referenced on screen) and one list of non-canon ships (ships seen or referenced outside of canon such as books, comics and games). On the canon ship list I haven't bothered putting 'hero' ships like the Enterprise or Runabouts. Apologies in advance for any spelling errors or duplicates.

If you are a UFP member the thread can be found HERE.

You missed the "USS Heart of Gold" under Captain Douglas Adams (which is canon, by the way. I kid you not :Dhttp://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Douglas_Adams )

Besides, authentic Starfleet ship names aren't that hard. Just pick a place, person or adjective of a non-aggressive nature and you are good. All those "USS Destroyer" "USS Dominator" or "USS Warriors" etc. are not a good reference for authentic names.

^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^

Added Heart of Gold, thanks for that.

With reference to some of the more aggressive names, I'm not particularly fond of some of them myself but when listing them I didn't want to remove any that I didn't personally like, if that would have been the case the USS Alka-Selsior most definitely would not have been there.

There are a few names listed under both Canon and Non-Canon. Off the top of my head, Adelphi and Alka-Selsior are listed twice. I'm pretty sure there is a few more.

essentially you can add any major battle from history, and any capital warship from the US, Russia, England France and Germany also city and state/province names. IMHO, the name of a 20th century politician probably would not get a starship named after them, including JFK.

other names would be from the series, like Fitzpatrick, Nogura, Wesley (no not the crusher variety)

add to that names of stars there is your start.

although my toons tend to follow a theme, one toon has ships named after places i have lived, another named after characters from Cats

Well to be fair, some of those names are based on historic ships like the "Warrior" which was the name of several British ships.

I've done this as well. My tac officer for instance has ship names from the Honor harrington book sieries. My Klingon engineer has names of infamous mythical creatures like the Terrasque, or Krakken.

Another character my main romulan has ship names for famous swords like Anduril, or Icingdeath.

But sheesh, pick a city country or anything and you've got ship names starfleet would of used.

It isn't particularly difficult to come up with great names, as it has been stated in this thread place names, historical battles and naval ships are all good places to start. These lists are just there for those that might want to just read a list of names to see if any jump out at them.

Yeah there will be some duplicates between the two lists where ships have either appeared both in Canon as well as Non-Canon sources.

Added. Because of the sheer number of Star Trek books, comics, games and roleplaying resources the non-canon list is never going to be 100% complete but I'm happy to add appropriate ship names that aren't on either list.

I'm really surprised there's no USS JOHNSTON or USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS.

Destroyer and Destroyer escort that were instrumental in the Battle of Leyte Gulf during WWII as they charged the Japanese battlegroup of battleships, cruisers and destroyers to save their escort carriers and the Marines at the beach landing in the Philippines.

Ah yes, the Tin Can that fought like a Battleship. Good stuff.

I'm going to have to disagree with the part in bold somewhat. If the politician in question was a driving force behind something the Federation values, and made a big historical impact in the process, then I can see a Federation vessel named after them. John F. Kennedy would be at the top of the list, since he stirred up public passion for man's quest for the Moon. Without his charisma and passion, the American taxpayer and the House (which controls the Federal purse strings) would've never gone for it. Thus, that big step for Humanity may have never been taken as soon as it was (if at all, in the Star Trek universe).

Just to clarrify, on the canon ship list I haven't bothered putting 'hero' ships like the Enterprise or Voyager since the vast majority of Star Trek fans will know those. The Defiant is on the list however the Defiant from DS9 is not the only canon usage of USS Defiant (there was also a Constitution class) which is why it is on the list.

While a politician such as JFK could be a possibility for a starship, there are other issues. Persons, places, and things for ship names only work to around 1996 because (if I recall) - that's when the Eugenics wars really heated up, and anything after that in real life is pretty much 'non canon' as far as Trek is concerned.

This isn't a political comment in any way - but the U.S.S. Winston Churchill would be a valid possibility - his deeds and actions occurred according to Trek history. The USS George W Bush or USS Barack Obama - however - not so much.

Between the Eugenics wars costing 37 million lives and the opening salvo of World War 3 costing 35-50 million more - eventually finishing with over half a billion dead, pop culture names from our current time really don't work at all from a canon stand point.

Somehow I don't think that "Canon" list is anywhere near accurate. it should be much much shorter.

Canon according to Cryptic are the TV Shows less the animated series, and the movies. that's it. no novels, graphioc novels technical manuals etc.

you can't even get a Canon answer to how many Constitution Class ships there are/were. Kirk clearly says There are 12 like her in the fleet in one episode, so does that mean there are 12 or 13? was NCC-1701-A a rename of one those 12 or was there a continuance of the ship building program?

again, though, there is canonical references that much of the history of the 20th Century were lost in the Eugenics wars... so who really knows?

I don't know about other countries, but you probably cant get over half of a group of people under the age of 25 to tell you who Kennedy was, and fewer still who LBJ was.

Nice to see others know their history from Naval Warfare.

That's why my escort retrofit is the USS Clifton Sprague (NCC-91016), after the CO of that task group.

    Generally, I'd go with
    -Famous ships
-Space Explorers (Gagarin, Armstrong, Valeri Polyakov, or named characters from the ST backstory)
-Culture heroes (i.e. Saints, Legendary heroes, great leaders who aren't military, founders of a cultural group, mythic gods)
    -Cities
    -Regions
    -Naval Heroes
-Attributes that would be good for a crew to have

    These would just sound right.

I use Latin sometimes just to keep from having the same name ships as others. Like

U.S.S. Belllator meaning warrior is my Avenger class battlecruiser. Also have

    U.S.S. Missouri - Dreadnaught Class

    U.S.S. Missouri B - Excelsior Class

    U.S.S. Missouri C - Ambassador Class

    U.S.S. Missouri D - Galaxy Class

    U.S.S. Missouri E - Sovereign Class

    U.S.S. Missouri F - Odyssey Class

U.S.S. John Paul Jones - Defiant Class

In my main character I do use ship names from the Spanish Navy, similar naming origin to canon but way less prone to find another ship with the same name, along with registry numbers choosen as 9+"a year relevant to the name" when applicable.

    Current lineup:

    USS Vencedora (Class F Shuttle)
    USS Rayo (Yellowstone Runabout)

    Meteoro (Light Escort)
    USS Plus Ultra (Light Cruiser)
