I've used a variety of methods for ship naming, my current lineup is as follows:

    - USS Albion (Miranda Class) - Named after my favourite football team, Brighton & Hove Albion.
    - USS Intrepid (Vesper Class - I'd just visited the aircraft carrier of the same in New York when I named this one.
    - USS Vulcan (Dakota Class) - A British Cold War bomber aircraft that my Dad used to fly when he was in the RAF.
    - USS Seagull (Ambassador Class) - The nickname of the aforementioned football team.
    - USS Blackadder (Yellowstone Runabout) - My favourite ever comedy series.
    - USS Tribble (Galaxy Class) - I liked the idea of having a big Galaxy class cruiser named after a small cute furball.
    - USS Dragonstone (Regent Class) - Dragonstone is where my favourite Game of Thrones character, Stannis Baratheon, lives.
    - USS Gallifrey (Excelsior Class) - The Doctor's home planet.
    - USS Feynman (Dyson Science Destroyer) - Named after physicist Richard Feynman.
    - USS Hawking (Mobius Class) - Named after physicist Stephen Hawking.
    - USS Knightmare (Gal-X) - My favourite TV show as a kid.
    - USS Goldstone (Odyssey Class) - The former home stadium of Brighton & Hove Albion.

I guess there will be as many different reasons for choosing names as there are ships, and the only ones that really get on my nerves when flying around are things like "Enterprize" or "Enterprisse" or other such variations on that name - you can't use it, so get over it.

As a Patrick O'Brian fan I always just use the British Royal Navy as my source for inspiration when naming my Fed starships. Plenty of good names to choose from there.

Personally I usually either pick the name of a font ( ISS Futura Italic is awesome on a mobius, and IRW Comic Sans is great for the hated t'varo) or go to my trusty TOS technical manual for the non-canon roster therein. It's lists several hundreds of authentic sounding ship names that make my life simple.

My guess is "hope" keeps people not playing but posting on the forums. For others, its a path of sad realization and closure. Grieving takes time. The worst "haters" here love the game, or did at some point.

I always have the hardest time with names. I like to be the only one with a ship name so as you can imagine, it takes me forever to find a name i like that no one has.
