We know that some force, or a coalition of forces attempted to obliterate the Iconians some 200,000 years previous to 2409. Apparently they didn't completely wipe them out as we're again dealing with them in the current storyline. I do wonder though whether Iconians have extremely long lifespans or whether, through the generations, they've just taught their children to hate all other life.
Regardless though, someone bombarded their homeworld and nearly wiped them out. The big question here is who? The next big question - are we likely to see the who again? The Iconian technology should be a good 200,000 years ahead of our own, so the current powers (who apparently evolved technologically together) are 200,000 years behind in weaponry and knowledge, and that's assuming the Iconians weren't well established back when anyway.
It would have taken a considerable force to take them out, and we're seemingly just not going to be up to the task, so are we likely to get assistance from anyone here, or is Memory Alpha miraculously going to develop anti Iconian technology?
The Tkon came back and found the Iconians messing with their stuff, so they gathered up some primitives and spanked them from the Alpha Quadrant. Then the Tkon crew bored and left.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Why do you persist? You put us down. We rise again. You end one plot - we forge another. You try so hard. But it always ends the same. Those who know you think you're mad and this is why... Even those men you sought to save have turned their backs on you. Yet you fight. You resist. Why?

That's assuming technology has a direct correlation to time passed. Depending on how badly the Iconians were trounced, and what sort of social events happened in the intervening millenia, they might not have progressed.
My guess is that the rebels did it by compromising the gateway network, forcing the Iconians to fight it out in hastily-built and therefore inadequate starships.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
It is quite possible that the war devastated the alliance's populations as well and took them to a point where they could not recover. Or the allied species might have turned on themselves over time once the Iconains were removed as a threat - the enemy of my enemy is my friend sort of thing.
Star Trek's history is too inconsistent to ever really know. Heck, why are the Voth not the dominant species in Alpha and Beta Quadrants when they left Earth 65 million years ago? They should have millions of colony worlds in that amount of time. Maybe it was the Voth colonies that fought off the Iconians but were destroyed sending the last of the Voth into the Delta Quadrant.

How did it feel when your homeworld was bombarded and you were forced to flee and hide in a hole for a while? :P

The Iconian were defeated some 200,000 million years ago, the Voth only rose 65 million years ago.

Ah, my mistake (thank you for the correction).
In that case though, it is possible the Voth were the ones who took them out, and they suffered heavily for it (this would further explain why their technology hasn't advanced as much as we'd think it should).
Still, if the Voth did do the deed, you'd think they'd be keeping an eye out for any reference for them, and one showing up on Qo'nos, can hardly remain a guarded secret for long.

who? it wasnt the t'kon, they were wiped out long before then. the breen were not advanced enough, the tholians, its possible but highly unlikely as they are another recent power like all the rest. the dominion didnt exist until the last 2 thousand years in human history, around the time the Romans fell to Odoacer and withdrew to become the Byzantine Empire. anyways, the Talosians gained warp ability back then, its possible they may of had a hand in the destruction of the Iconians, especially with their extraordinary mental powers. the Vulcans were possibly around at the time, perhaps even warp capable, do not know for sure because of Sargon. It's possible the Voth may of had a hand in the destruction of the Iconians, the same with the Bajorans and possibly the Hirogen. other unknowns like the Monean and the Organians should never be discounted.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Every 200 000 years, the Iconians come back to exterminate all intelligent life in the galaxy, so they are not destroyed by their own mechanical creation (the Borgs).
Luckily for us, this time we have a ghost child, 3 buttons, and a lot of shepard in game. They are so doomed...
On a more serious note, we'll find something, we always do. If we are lucky and we ever fight them. So far, they are the recurring joke behind the bad guys, but they are not real a threat. Sometimes they come and troll us (before the revamped borg mission in the borg-romulan mission, taking Sela, during the Taris/Iconia mission...). But that's all.
I think we're gonna have an STO version of the Battle of Coriana 6 at some point.
I'm intrigued by what you mean by this? Do you expect just one epic space battle or do you mean two powerful foes squaring off with the younger races caught in the middle?

Nobody expects the Iconian Inquisition! Their chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... their two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Their three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to air and darkness.... Their four...no... amongst their weapons.... amongst their weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll start over.
Never mind. Monty Python called. They want their script back.

[Spoilers Ahead from Surface Tension FE; you have been warned]
idk i'd consider a single iconian able to appear and disappear at will amidst a huge congregation of combat hardened warriors and soldiers from the three major factions, in the very heart of the Klingon Empire, and able to completely vaporize 6 members of the Klingon High Council with a gesture, one hell of a threat.
i'd hate to see what their ships might be capable of were they to actually fire their weapons at us. remember, we cannot even target their ships, how would we defend against them if we can't even get a credible targeting lock.
KDF for Life! Romulan at Heart Fed cause they made me ~ :P

After 4years of doing nothing at all. Yeah, I'm so scared, we've lost a bunch of klingons.
The idea behind the Iconian plot is to weaken the major powers so they can't ally against them. That's why they pushed the Undines so they start a war between fed-kdf, they destroyed the Romulan homeworld and set a civil war amongst them.
So... when the galaxy was at war, did they strike ? No. They waited. And now we know they exist, and we are allied against them. Good job !
As I said, not a threat. But yeah, we've lost about 10 klingons.
Hmmm... Q, Organian, Melkot, Trelane-ians, Travellers, and the rest of the "hyper advanced" and "usually out to lunch" races of the galaxy probably beat the Iconians and used the study of Iconian tech/relics/whatnot to become the races they are today...
Of course, convincing an Organian, Q, or Trelane to fess up...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

You all know the mission and what is at stake. I have come to trust each of you with my life, but I have also heard murmurs of discontent. I share your concerns.
We are trained for diplomacy. We would be legends, but the records are sealed. Glory in battle is not our way.
Think of our heroes: Kirk, who made peace with the Klingons. Or Picard, who kept armies at bay with words.
These giants do not seem to give us solace here, but they are not all that we are. Before the network, there was the fleet. Before diplomacy, there were soldiers.
Our influence stopped the Borgs, but before that, we held the line!
Our influence stopped the Dominion, but before that, we held the line!
Our influence will stop the Iconians ! In the battle today, we will hold the line!
This thought occurred to me as i sat and suffered in silence through my math class today. As we do not know who it was that wiped out the Iconians and their homeworld, maybe it was the Feds, Romulans, and KDF of today that did so via time travel? Go back in time to wipe out the Iconian homeworld via a virus or something, which would render upcoming events moot.

Today. Today... At the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there is not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today we face the monsters that are at our door and bring the fight to them! Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!
Couldn't resist the Pacific Rim speech. More fitting than Independence Day.

I'll just leave that here for the more aggressive Iconians.
