How would they get around the movement issues that I mention in my last post?
You realize that Cubes are already pilotable, right? Every now and then a dev will hop in one and blow up us wee players on Tribble. So while certain things like Evasive Maneuvers may work oddly... they are controllable now. Will they stop on a dime or be able to move in any direction? Probably not, but then Cryptic doesn't care. They launched the Prometheus without MVAM. They launched the Galaxy without Saucer Separation. They really don't care if the ability of the ships reflect what we see on the screen so long as they can sell it.
It'll be a sphere, followed by a hard vacuum as the Star Trek fans leave in disgust.
I'd definately quit for a while.....then after maybe a year, I'd probably wander back in one day, see that I have a buttload of zen, see some new content, see the grindfest, play for a month, and leave again.....kinda what I've been doing on and off for the last year.
Many people have been saying Cryptic will put a Borg Cube/Octahedron in a Borg Lockbox. This will not be happening and here's why.
Do to the massive size of a Borg Cube it will not become playable, at least not in a lockbox.
The most simple powers such as Evasive Maneuvers and others like it will cause the game to bug out severely, where did I learn this? When I was having a conversation with Tacofangs in game.
The only way possible to have a playable Cube would be to create a playable Borg Faction with all new powers, but that is years of work and planing.
If you have something to argue this, please be nice about it. :P
I could see a borg box... its in fact less stupid then the idea of a undine box.
Cubes ore no doubt a no go.
However... Sphere, probe... and Diamond are all possible.
I can see the contents now.
Onega rep boxes.
A couple borg style regen / nanite torpedo infusion traits.
A Borg doff mini pack... same doffs as normal ones but all borg with borg style traits.
Borg Duty officers.
Borg Diamond Science Ship Main lockbox reward.
Borg Sphere cruiser Lobi store.
As far as how to take care of player confusion about direction you are headed... I don't see it being that hard... however. They could fix that by giving the diamond only 5 weapon slots... but adding a free [arc] mod to each slot... and the cruiser same idea... 7 weapon slots but each slot gaining a free [arc] mod. As long as they don't add an escort style ship they don't have to add small 45 degree arch weapons... anything with 90 degree and higher with the free arc mod would be hard for even the most inept player to not be able to line up. The added arc could easily be explained as the advantage of borg ship design. Make them the first dual commander boff seating ships... and the fact that they are -1 weapon could make them an interesting ship that wouldn't be unbalanced with 2 commanders.
However, the inclusion of either is just evidence that the devs have stopped caring whether or not something is canon or not.
The inclusion of bioships is not just anti-hard canon, its against STO canon.
I find it hard to put aside the perception that they just dont care whether its star trek or not.
And thats really not what I want in the developer of the only Star Trek MMO available.
Devs don't care about our opinions anymore with respect to lock boxes. We're the 1% of players who actually post on the forums remember? The rest of the player base loves these shinies and will stop at nothing to acquire them. How do you expect to change this behavior with one post?

Don't disagree I find the idea of players flying undine bio ships beyond the pail.
Borg though... to be honest its not all that crazy. In a few trek episodes they did control borg ships for short times. I really don't understand why they would ever fly one full time though and trust the ship might not decide to inject them and go home. lol
They could have done the undine box MUCH better... by NOT giving us bio ships... but federation/klink/rom ships fused with bio ship tech. That is how I KNOW they are lazy. They could have kept each races ship profiles but had large sections of living material. Think of it as next next next gen Voyager bio packs. It would have made more sense... it would have at least somewhat kept the "no lockbox at ESD" type people a little happier. Instead they went the lazy way and just updated there in game models and slapped a couple on player ship frames. Pretty weak.
They could have done the same thing for pretty much all the boxes... instead of giving us Tholian Orbs... why not Tholian out a Fed/Klink design. The only ships that make real sense are the galor and marauder... every thing else should have taken canon models for each race and infused obvious design elements from the lock box race. Think of how the Borg Set changes the lock of current ships... they could do something like that for a borg box. Not giving us actual borg ships... but rather heavily modded Racial designs based on borg tech. I think that was even supposed to be the story on the Romulan Nerada... seeing the same type of mods done to say a Akeria class... or Klingon Raptor could work...
Really though we all know Cryptic is (and have always been known as) a copy and paste MMO company. It applies to the missions they do, the models they use... and the lockboxs they have been doing. Minimal work is the only really unifying factor in all they do.
Some people, but a playable Borg Cube would break the game for everyone. Not because it's unrealistic, because this "genetic space simulator" would never operate properly. I don't agree with everything decision Cryptic makes. The thing that would break the game for me is if they made ships and equipment that would only be available to Superior Officers in a Fleet.
And with only respect please don't say "this game doesn't run properly as it is", because to some that would be an opinion.
I'm sorry to people who I, in the past, insulted, annoyed, etc.

I know every player agrees it would be bad the engine would flip....
Just when you think Cryptic couldn't do anything stupider though. They do things like Shimitar and Ddex. Cause you know those models work just fine. No clipping to see here move along.
To be honest, the canon complaints about this specific set of lock boxes kind of amuse me. Not because I necessarily think they are invalid. More that I think this particular ship (pun intended) sailed long before now.
I can see how this could be the tipping point for some though.
Personally I just don't care one way or the other about what other people choose to fly. And I understand that its partially what keeps the game running.

IMO the Warchickens are so annoying. There always clogging up space around. ESD and DS9 a Cube would just make my computer spit out fireeballs. :P

Borg ships and Undine ships are canon. They just should not be commanded by players which is the case for every single lockbox ship and the event ships. Although the Risian Corvette actually makes sense for Starfleet officers. Adding Imperial Star Destroyers and White Stars to the game would be against canon.
Personally, I am upset with Cryptic not creating Undine Hybrid ships like they did with the Tal Shiar Adapted ships or a good story with how we obtained Undine ships like the ships are actually slaves to the Undine and we rescue them. Treating them like regular ships and gutting them to make them usable just doesn't do it justice.

I agree; hybrid ships makes much more sense but that would have required more work and creativity. Anybody who has watched voyager knows the undine always come back for their own, ships included so the notion of the ferengi acquiring one and holding on to it is laughable.
A Diamond is the only ship that would make me want to use a lockbox. I always thought those were beautiful and it would go so well with my Borg Captain and her Non-Organic crew.
At this point I can only throw my arms in the air and say "why not?"
Picard would S___ a brick if he saw what's orbiting earth these days. Half the Romulan Fleet, a Jem Hadar battle group sprinkled with some Galors, Marauders and planet killing bio ships. What's an armada of Borg Cubes going to do?...
This, coupled with the space set visuals available to all of them, I can only conclude that Starfleet is a circus.
Red Squad Dominick Kane
USS Arrow-B, Defiant Class.

The sol system has been invaded!!! Wait, those are Starfleet captains!? What the!?
The best argument for justifying Borg lock box ships is "but diversity!!!"
Beamed up to my Negh'Var from the Voth Battlezone earlier and ended up next to a ****ing Nicor. Made me want to ****ing throw up.

Want to join me in my negh'var and hunt for nicors in kerrat? I think we both might feel a little better after vaporizing one.
Might take you up on that after they get the racial trait bug fixed tomorrow.

Many people in the forum are claiming a borg cube is too big, but what size of cube are you all talking about? The romulans run drone ships which transform into borg interceptors (called probes in STO) with 30K+ hull. A Sphere would likely to possess 45K-55K hull but so can a lower tier borg cube. By lower tier I'm referring to Star Trek Legacy, where there were four tiers of borg cubes. The first tier could be killed by a constitution class ship, and tier 4 was a full blown tactical cube. So yes, on this scale small cubes are highly possible, tactical cubes, never.
And who says we have to even get spheres? Why not borg assimilators, pyramids, cylinders, or even the renegade one? There are many borg ships to choose from that would easly fit into the current control method for the game.
With respect to weapons, borg ships create a whole new efficiant method of using weapons. Instead of 4 and 4 or 4 and 3, they could run 4 360deg energy weapon slots and 2 360deg torpedo slots. One torpedo would be ship specific and the other one could equip any torpedo of yoru choice. This keeps people from having to worry about orientation for ship combat and purchasing seven or eight different weapons to engange in combat on all sides.
The opprotunities with borg vessels are endless and will create a way for enjoyable and challenging game mechanics and storyline for years to come. And we all know that borg ships would sell big time, people who do not play STO would put their money into it just to have a borg ship.
Borg lockboxes will for now, be out of reach becuase Cryptic still has to fix up the breen and cardassian missions first.

I thought WoW's forums had angry elitist snobs, but I never could have imagined the level STO forums has.
However, for people who play this because its star trek and not generic space based MMO number 3, they're one and the same thing.
Anti-canon breaks the game for some people.

What about their little sisters, the Nicorettes? You can tell them apart by their pretty pink bows. And their constant gum-smacking.
Ikr? All those people have one but we don't...
Please don't punch me I'm scared

I could afford one right now if I wanted to...so that invalidates whatever theory your espousing here about this being about envy. Nice try though.

Can I have some of your money.... pretty please... XD
