playing sto is hard

with all the builds for ships, characters, bridge officiers, duty officiers, and now kits. the game is hard to play esp if you want one of the best ships eqipped in game. there too much to learn for no real reward. pvp is horrible. with making the game where you have to think so much in order not to even accomplish something, why bother playing sto? most games you dont have to think half as much in order to get character situated for playing. even the concept of change is great, its alot of work and reading. im starting to think its not worth the effort.

    So...let me see...you are wanting cookie cutter builds, with minimal effort, for great reward...yeaaaah that aint gonna happen. As for it being too hard...I am not sure what game you are playing, but its definitely not STO.

    Practice key is young padawan.
    This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

    Being the "best" at anything is never easy.

    That applies to WoW, Age of Conan, Vindictus, Neverwinter, Guild Wars 2, Star Trek Online, and life in general.

    Do you realize that this is an MMORPG right?? not the arkanoid??

    ANY mmorpg has its own difficulty and a lot of things to care of, STO is not special. If you cant handle STO for being too "complicated" dont try any other mmorpg... this is a STAR TREK game and the star trek universe is vast and complicated, if you are not a person who likes STAR TREK, i understand it can be confusing.. and complicated. But that will be the first month, after that, things get easier.

    I've always felt that there should be a random variable that changes daily, hourly or weekly that tweaks which build is "OP." They do this now, sort of, every few months with tweaks to various powers and "balance issues" but if it changed all the time at random, it would certainly make seeking out 14 different builds a futile gesture (or a killer collection activity) and just make folks play with what they have.

    i think the old LTP accronym is good for this one, The game is as easy or as hard as youy make it, and tbh it sounds like you want everything for nothing, like in any game, be prepared to work for your rewards, you will find the end result most pleasing, or if your like me and just do stuff as u like it, make multiple toons and experiment, the game is for fun its not real nor is it to be taken too seriously.

    yes but if it wasnt would we still play, I for one like some of the complexities of it because when your fed up of them you can always go bash a few drones together and make a fire.

    Building a ship that works with so many variables to take care of is lot of fun and very rewarding for you.
    there too much to learn for no real reward.worth the effort.
    I suggest you go watching disney channel if you don't want to learn.
    pvp is horrible.

    STO is hard to play, in PvP only skilled players will get to the end of the match and have fun. If this doesn't suit you for the mentioned reasons, Control Panel -> Uninstall a program. Rest is up to you. For sure we don't need more QQers in here.

    To some extent I have to agree with the OP - and I have said similar things in the past. Very little of the game is actually explained to you.

    You start in your T1 ships and everything is fine, because everyone is using the same basic T1 ship. Then you get promoted into T2 and all of a sudden you are supposed to understand the differences between Cruiser, Science, and Escort - as well as how your chosen Class functions in each of them. There is nothing in game that explains to new players why they might decide to choose a Cruiser over an Science Vessel. And on top of all that you have now had Dilithium and Doffing dumped on you without any real understanding of the importance of Dilithium or exactly how Doffing is supposed to benefit you over time. And all of this happens very quickly because leveling is at Light-speed in the game with you going into a T3 vessel in around 10 /played hours and being at end-game around 25.

    I have been here since before the Trek license was even announced as purchased by Cryptic and there are still things in this game I do not fully understand - such as where to hunt-down all the Doff chains or exactly how some of the various Equipable items are calculated into your stats when you slot them or choose a Skill - or why you should choose Engine type A over B, or Shield type D over E, etc. Very little of this game is actually explained while you play - which is why there are always so many repeat questions on the forum constantly.

    And yes, all established games have a learning curve that you either deal with or you do not play, but in many instances it seems like STO goes out of its way to not make things intuitive or even marginally understandable.
    STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

    You played another game. One of the worst things and most horrible things on STO is pvp lol. Because it is almost non existent. Because only a few play pvp in STO. Because it is messed up. And the community.. well, im not going to go that way.

    and... you beaten me to it, took me over half a year of regular play to actually learn how to make non-horrible builds, because the game does its hardest to keep information from you.

    this is why you have people using DBB cruisers, beam escorts, rainbow/skittle ships, etc, and it doesn't help when someone asks either ingame or the forums "what is the best (insert random stuff here)" folks have to give that incredibly dumb answer "there is no best", which doesn't explain a thing.

    i disagree however that playing time has anything to do it, 25h to get to max level(and that is if you're basically blasting through the content, since it tends to be more than that), should be enough to teach how to play something, even if not perfect, the problem lies with the lack of explanation.

    STO hard? That's so laughable it's potentially dangerous, as people could pass out from laughing too hard.

    But if STO is too hard, fear not- for there are games made to suit those who find STO too hard. I present to you- Progress Quest!

    I don't know anything about what builds are best or what goes with what or doesn't, its all way above me.
    but I just bung in the highest tier of whatever I can lay my hands on preferably rare on very rare and any sets that I might have picked up one way or another.
    most likely any players in the know would swoon if they see what I was using but it works ok for me....... mostly.

    When I think about everything we've been through together,

    maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

     and if that journey takes a little longer,

    so we can do something we all believe in,

     I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

    In the OP's defence. The game is not especially newbie friendly. You level up so quickly you don't have time to adjust to anything or work out what's going on before you're getting new mechanics thrown at you thick and fast and very little is well explained.

    I've introduced several, quite intelligent, friends to the game, and I've had to sit down and explain things like doffs to them. It took one of them a couple of months to realise they could switch between RPG and shooter mode, or even promote their boffs. At least the tutorials are better now.

    A significant amount is easier if you've played MMOs before as I had, but please don't take it for granted that not everyone has. Due to this being Star Trek it brings in people who would not otherwise play RPGs or MMOs, so the mechanics and concepts aren't so easy for them.

    If this game makes you think too much, never, ever, ever play EVE. The very idea of transversal velocity would consume all of your brain's processing power. We won't even get into the mechanics of cornering the market on one item with moderate demand, in three regions (one of which is a tertiary trade hub).

    This game is about as difficult to pick up and play as Lincoln logs and Lego. It seems the problem stated in the OP is someone wants to be at the top levels of performance, without putting any effort into getting there.

    I disagree. I find that this game is only as hard as I choose to make it. Find yourself a good fleet with good members who are willing to teach and it's a lot easier. I fell into an awesome fleet who has gotten my builds off the ground nicely.

    I see the OP's point, a friend of mine has similar sentiments.

    The thing is though you make it hard on yourself. Going the min-max route in a game like STO where rules are always changing and better gear is always being added is tough. Unless you play hardcore or sink in cash you'll never keep up.

    But the point is, you don't need to do it. Any of it.

    STO's flexibility is a very good thing. The option to fly whatever ship you want, in whatever configuration you want, is one of the main strengths of the game. It can be daunting to new players I'm sure, I certainly agree the game does an awful job of explaining things. But with practice it'll come.
