Marauding missions the KDF equivalent of "Diplomacy" gets prisoner and contraband, Like Federation military raids on criminals in cardassian space. Also turning prisoners in to labor nets you more dilithium than the Federation prisoner hand in.

You can also sell prisoners and colonists into slavery for GPL. As for Dilithium farming, Defense against the federation, Romulan's(Tal'shiar), and True Way, nets about 1440 Dil a mission.

Now, as noted, Star Trek III certainly demonstrates that it's biological, but there's another of those continuity issues to which I have alluded at various times; namely, Spock's explanation in "Amok Time" suggests very strongly that Pon Farr is psychological and not biological. I would find the idea that Romulans share this condition rather hard to swallow, due to their well-known reputation for being "passionate."
Actually the idea that it's at least partially psychological makes sense to me. Why? Well.... one of the main differences between Romulans and Vulcans is that Romulans don't try to suppress their emotions the way Vulcans do. Thus it kinda makes sense for their to be.. side effects.

I have 2 Romulans 1 Fed aligned and 1 KDF aligned. Mostly because I wanted a variety in Bridge Officers, as much as I want a pure Romulan crew there is something nice about different species contributing different traits and skills to the mission.

(side note: I think Romulans could make a Klingon blush in bed eyooo.)

We all get the Deferi missions (once we've completed that part of the storyline). The Empire Defense missions open up quite a bit earlier (as far as level goes; in actual time, it's not that long).

I always assumed it was both, but primarily psychological. A suppression of emotion, building up over time, and about every seven years, finally overflowing in its simplest possible form... the base instinct of mating. Vulcans don't seem the type to make love for pleasure, after all, and while I'd assume they do mate outside Pon Farr for family planning purposes, there's just no reliable outlet for those impulses. So, when the psychological tension reaches a fever pitch, and you wind up with sweet sweet Vulcan rage-sex for no other reason than rage-sex. And I'm willing to bet money Vulcan lovemaking is particularly violent (not Klingon violent, maybe, but there's almost definitely a lot of physicality beyond the expected going on) based both on how unruly Vulcans get during this phase and how their distant cousins are so famed for their, erm... "passion".

I'm no protogoth-tier expert in either race though so all that is just talking out of my TRIBBLE coupled with piecing together what I've seen on screen, nothing more.

I keep hearing about Romulans getting their own faction I guess its called. I haven't been keeping up at season 9 or whenever it will be. Is this true and will it affect the maurader/diplomacy aspect of the doff system, will there be a new doff mission type like the fed and kdf have or will it just be left alone?

I haven't heard any news about this (not that it may or may not be true) so unless the devs prove us wrong. And believe me I'd be happy to be wrong if the romulans got out of fraction status and get a full faction thats independent.

    Senator vreenak take it away!

My one Romulan (actually a Reman) went Federation.

The clincher, was that I just couldn't see a Romulan siding with a force as volatile as the KDF when such a steady and easily manipulated ally was presenting itself to me with it's throat exposed.

That said, I never leveled her, and I cannot comment on the wisdom of that choice at end game.

My first Romulan went Fed because I had friends on the Fed side. I recently made a KDF sided Romulan due to the fact that the Romulans have allied with Klingons in the past, and the D7 ship as well.

I went Federation for, well, easier access of endgame gear and more convincing action choices. Mostly the latter, really: having my romulan bridge crew get all 'honor' and all that wholesome klingon stuff was more bothersome than the occasional reference to the Prime Directive.

I actually thought the Romulan storyline sells alliance with the klingon better. The Federation really paled by contrast. But allying with the Federation made a bit more sense from the Reunificationist perspective.

If I pick a roleplaying stance on that... my Romulan female science captain was interested in joining the Federation because they have far more interests in the pursuit of science. It appealed to her more than "Grr", "Today is a good day to die!" and "Live gagh".

If i have one regret with my choice, it's fashion-wise: the KDF-aligned outfits that are opened up are far more slick and sexy looking than the Fed ones. :(

    Federation.

In-universe, my Romulan char had a childhood friend on Romulus who was the daughter of a Federation ambassador.

Out-of-universe, it's so I can put her in the same fleet as my Fed where I know everybody.

Reroll and go Fedbear. Roughly 10 levels to do over is nothing. Or you can sit there and whine and pout about it in your captain's chair for the rest of your gametime.

We do not need your kind affiliated with the Empire.

My Romulan is stuck at level 9, cause I can't decide which faction to join.

looking for some opinions on each side here...

    thoughts?

Most of my Romulans are KDF, for three reasons:

    KDF need luv.

KDF Plasmonic leech console is only 1000 ZEN, as opposed to 25 million EC per purchase. Same goes with other KDF-only content like Acetons.

KDF/ROM-KDF has a generally better quality of players, ie PvP wise.

    Downsides to KDF:
Fleet mark grinding is tougher, since no one queues for those.
Finding teams for Voth BZ, Epohh doffing etc is harder, again because less people play KDF or KDF aligned.

So if you love doing something different, KDF is the alignment for you. It's a long haul though.

I must say, KDF Rom with Arkif Retrofit... the ability to purchase Runabouts & Delta Flyers is great! Except I can't equip them

The funny thing being that I can buy Starfleet hangar pets in the Flotilla & Dyson Command (and probably New Romulus) as KDF Romulan. The Starfleet common pets aren't greyed out at all, so I can actually get them into inventory. I just can't equip them.

And I can't buy KDF hangar pets! There's no option in the usual places in Tau Dewa. Just Starfleet pets. I have to go back to Qo'nos or DS9 or Ganalda to get KDF pets.

    Starfleet Online strikes again! LULZ.

Fed, because there its easier to find better fleet gear than with KDF.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

This is sadly true ... My own KDF Fleet still doesn't have fully upgraded Fleet holdings ... I'm spending almost every EC I get buying DoFF's, Self Sealing Stem Bolts, and Photon Torpedo's, trying to get the projects finished ... Then spending all my Fleet Credits on Spire Provisions (damn you Cryptic for that!)

There is always cashed up players who fill the Dil requirements instantly, and Marks get "sniped" as well, but then the projects stagnate.

I still prefer the KDF option though ... Leech, Marauding ... And of course the Klingon Starbase is just WAY cooler IMHO.

I recently came back to the game after a little over a year. I was terribly excited to find a third faction had been introduced. Now I am trying to figure out why I bothered to make a romulan at all, since I cannot actually be a romulan. As a roleplayer (well i try anyhow) I find it very frustrating that after 9 levels of getting into the character, sharing with my character the angers of having my colony wiped off the map, and the joys of finding a new planet... I am now left in some sort of limbo with a choice that I really dont want to make. So i guess what I am really asking is, please help me understand why I made a romulan character. Why have the developer's (this may be a premature judgement) PRETENDED to introduce a third faction? My pointy ears are open, I am a-listenin ^o.0^

    My take on the alliances:
    Disclaimer: Suggestive Imagery.

It's not as bad as you may think, and furthermore now that the war between the Federation and the Klingons is over, the faction system itself seems rather obsolete.

The Federation, because in my Romulan mind, they're way more easy to manipulate and dupe into believing I've turned over a new leaf. They're far too trusting.

While the KDF have a nice healthy dose of racism against my people and will always be on their guard over whether or not I will betray them.

The Federation seemed like the best choice IMO. They are the most accepting after all. Granted they have that whole 'cultural subversion' thing going on (thought that talk between Quark and Garak about Root beer was point on) But at the end of the day they are much more likely to be helpful by nature of their culture. The Klingons can go from loyalty to bloodthirsty fury at the drop of a hat. Klingon 'help' is much more likely to end with you insulting their honor (likely on accident) or being accused of trechary or spying (probably accurate) and getting shot with a disruptor.
