I think that's the point. Now with so many rifts opening, maybe people will pay attention and CLOSE rifts instead of blasting the current wave and bailing to find another.
Hasn't worked. No one wants to close rifts half the time.

If that was the intention, then it backfired. People are getting overwhelmed and then just giving up.

Don't you see, you can't close the rifts because the ships that spawn constantly at the one your trying to close and the one 1km away that is also spawning ships keeps you pinned so you don't get a chance. By the time you dispatch the enemy ships, another wave is spawning close by so you don't get the chance. Even if I want to close rifts, most of the time I am constantly engaged so I can't do it. If the spawn rate of ships from the rifts was lower, I could see increasing the numbers, but the present spawn rate plus constant rift formation is just too difficult for a pub squad. I don't think the developers have thought this change through. Thankfully I am almost done so I don't have to endure this much longer.

It can be done, but straight pewpew wont do it.
Positioning, speed, situational awareness.
Pick your fights and withdraw if overwhelmed. you can do more somewhere else if you're swamped.
Use abilities that fiddle with the enemies ability to see you, jam sensors, mask energy field, the elachi subspace console.
Use gravity wells to pull light enemies to the other side of the rift while you scrabble back opposite to close it.
If you have a non communicative team, then use your eyes, see someone fighting round a rift dont go in guns blazing. Instead close the rift, then help mop up.
Not loving the grindiness of this event, but the mission per se (with a few minor caveats) is sound.

Nope the point was so people wouldn't be twiddling their thumbs for a couple of minutes in the first round when they have closed all the rifts.
Can't one simply turn off auto-attack and when you desire to close a rift, hit ESC to 'untarget' whatever you're shooting at? With no active target your auto-firing weapons don't have anything to shoot at.
Tried that before what happens is the next thing that shoots you reengages the target lock and your wepons start firing. You might be able to keep the auto firing weapons IF you
1 use a different key to fire weapons than any other hotkeyed power.
2 you have the auto attack set to either Target change cancels or disabled altogether. course if you have target change cancels and you get a new target by being shot at your back to square one.
And dont forget you still have to wait for your firing cycle to finish, that alone can reengage a target.
Funny, in pugs, I fly sci ships and I have the exact opposite problem. I can't seem to find support long enough to close rifts. I often have to give up closing rifts just to try and kill off the ships long enough to close the rift i'm on...then inevitably multiple rifts pop on top of each other and, sadly, I don't have the dps to do both.
Maybe I'm not "good" enough, but when I'm with my fleet, I never have to worry about taking fire, and oddly enough, the whole darn things goes laughably smooth...too "easy" if you will.
BTW I've largely given up on elite, and have seen less leeches as a result. After a point things were so bad, I wasn't really seeing that much fewer marks on the normal.
We wanted the time gate dumped altogether for that reason, and PWE gives us more rifts instead. It's seems PWE is the most misinformed of us all.
Thanks, PWE, for yet another out of touch update!
Honestly, when it has repeatedly been made clear that it is about cheeks in seats, expecting them to shorten the event rather than add to it means you are, in fact, out of touch and misinformed.
Not that I'd have have minded the gate's removal... just not suprised.

Of course. This is PWE, where no good play goes unpunished.

Is it me, or did they greatly tweek how many ships there are. Hard enough before, but you can't close a rifts or activate a relay with 10 ships shooting you. We had 4 out of 5 at one spot, and it literally took 5 minutes to clear 4 rifts and the relay.
Well, its better that u dont have a mandatory naptime if you are with a good group ..
BUT its abit ridiculous now ... not really fun & worth it after u get the event done ...
Its a tougher challenge now ... but the amount of rifts is TOO much currently ... they overshot their makrs while fixxing it ...
IMHO a maximum of 8 rifts AT THE SAME TIME would probably work , provided u dont get 4 rifts within 10km of eachother, instead of the previous 30 rifts maximum which left high power groups with 5+mins of waiting time.
Still needs some tweaking before this mission becomes a fun replay game....
Reduce the active rift number and limit the proximity of the rifts to eachother, and it will be alot more enjoyable to play this one.
Mind you, then again you get runs like the one i've just come off of.
Some poor soul got D/Ced before we started and wasn't replaced.
What followed was four ships playing an outstanding match, not just pairing up, but dynamically changing partnerships, well timed solo forays and even some timely cross healing. Everyone seemed to have eyes in the back of their head and everyone had time to be flexible and helpful.
Not quite a perfect score at the end, but in the circumstances fantastic work.

Honestly, for a culture that prides itself on surviving zombie apocalypses, I'd be surprised they didn't go around leaving front doors wide open.

Probably the most satisfying run I've had so far.
And, just to be clear on that, that was run #139.
