One of the things of an mmorpg is the sensation leveling up your character. If you give me a fully leveled up one, i dont want it. Is that simple.
If people is so desperate to have already a fully leveled player, then they are going to stop playing the game even sooner than they expected. Same happens with STO.
Leveling a toon is part of the game, if you just erase that, you are giving away an important part of STO.
There is no sense on selling leveled up charactares, not in WoW, not in any game.
I honestly dont get you guys, why the hurry of being already level 50?? seriously.. i dont get it.
Tons of time to level a character???? dude, STO is one of the fastest game leveling your character ive ever seen, if you cant be patience with it, then you will be no patient with no games at all.
In 1 week you can reach level 50 with no efforts at all. Even in less time, if that is a lot of time, then probably you never played other games sin your life.
And of course, why i must pay for something i can achieve in just a few days???? and its part of the game?? its ridiculous. Really really ridiculous.
Difference would be with WoW is that leveling doesn't prepare you at all for how to play end game without you also having leveled in dungeons, which is entirely optional. STO, on the other hand, there's not a huge difference between how you play solo vs a group as far as skills you use.
Plus, as pointed out, you still need to do at least 10 levels, it's largely a way for new people who want to play with friends right away do so without having to spend weeks levelling through 1-90 content. STO, on the other hand, you can play with your friends even if they are max level and you've just started.
There are many "companies" out there who offer their services, for a fee, to level-up your character for you. WOW's approach would seem to be cutting out the illicit middle-man in the process. While I do not agree with it I can understand why Blizzard would rather make that money then to allow some Russian or Chinese gamer to make it. Gaming is not the most profitable business to be in during economic down-turns.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
For one, you can level to 50 in a matter of days...or with limited time...a week perhaps.
And buying a level 50 character does you in no way any good. Nothing was more annoying in WoW than some level capped guy asking how his "toon" worked.
No one wants to help someone learn how to play their cash bought character. Why would we? So we can trivialize our accomplishments and knowledge?
Maybe they can set up a proficiency test as well for those who don't want to group with a level fifty with 7 different weapons in 7 different slots and no consoles to improve any of them..

You're confusing leveling with progression. There are many ways to progress a character without a leveling system. The reputation system is a prime example. A player can build up their avatar by earning tokens that unlock new abilities and items. The sensation you get is from the accomplishment of making your avatar more powerful. Basically, you feel good when your avatar becomes "more" than they were. This is the sense of mastery a player gets. Some call it "completionist".
STO could drop the entire leveling system and start every avatar at the equivalent of level 50. They could change the game from a leveling progression to a role playing progression. You could play your avatar as a diplomat (first contact), a soldier (KvF war, Borg invasion), an explorer (ESNW), a peacekeeper (Patrolling the sector), an infiltrator (espionage and surveillance) or a scientist (scanning anomalies and researching technology). The list goes on. Each type of content could have its own particular rewards that would lend to building a particular career. In this manner, you progress by doing what you choose to do rather than being pushed into a "class". Your playing habits determine your avatar's identity. If you like combat, you'll probably play a lot of peacekeeper and soldier type content. If you like story, you'll probably take the diplomat or explorer path. If you're the type that doesn't like to get their hands dirty, you might like playing the scientist or infiltrator.
Go here and show your support for a better Foundry!

That's just it, it may never happen as a store item, it was just mentioned they were thinking about it and it needed more discussions and thought. The only confirmed one is the single character boost on purchase of the Warlords expansions.
Obviously there are some people out there who are more likely to go down the route of buying more expansions and then paying for a character transfer to their main account. Which would rake in more for Blizzard at the start. As we both have said there are those willing to drop a lot of cash on their hobbies.
If it does make it live I have the suspicion it will be halfway through the expansion after the hardcore ones have done the expansion+character transfer route.

Technically though on the matter where this game is concerned it would be the equivalent of buying a level 40. I can level fast both here and in WoW, it is about knowing what to do and where to go for the quickest leveling experience. As much as I wouldn't be likely to use I can see others who would.
And btw.. 60$?? are you serious?? everybody is crazy now???, if Blizzard needs to sell leveled chars for that price, something really wrong must be happening. Its like selling something that you are getting for free a few days later. But since there will be always stupid and naive people that will buy it, thats the reason they do it. They dont have anything to lose, on the contrary lol.
I thought, the basics of a MMORPG is the need of making new content to keep the game alive (that plus fixing the bugs, but Blizzard takes that seriously, not like cryptic), not the opposite, i mean, giving players things done so they will be enjoying the game less than before. The world upside down, guys.
All relative anyway - only WoW offerring this, and that doesn't necessarily set a precedent that every other MMORPG has to follow.
Actually EverQuest 2 had this before wow, and there's another MMORPG out there that did it before too, I find it extremely silly to do this, when the point of a game is to play it. The excuse I don't have time to play does not fit well. If you don't have time to play to level, you don't have time to play a max level character either.
Don't play games if you don't want to play the game.

seeing some ppl will pay 600 to have a mount in the game i can see it just like some ppl here pay 500$ to trying and get a lockbox ship

That is the likely price of the expansion and that is the only way you can get the level boost. No expansion no boost.

doing that would kill STO, WoW can afford to do that, since most people play it for raids, STO doesn't have anything similar to raids.
as i understand it, WoW is sub based anyways, so it be a logical outcome as spending months grinding away is not to everyones tastes and because i met a WoW player once in real life, he told me about his toon and his opinion on current WoW stuff at the time was cata and something else expansion related, this was (several years ago before the panda invasion or w/e its called). from the way i understood it, it sounded like something you would need to dedicate your life to and that grinding was a tough job. i also met a r-scape player as well, but there wasnt that much difference between the players that they spent hours at their gaming. so to someone new a novice, it should be off limits until they reached a level 90 toon to avoid missing out on crucial details on the game as they progressed up the ranks. but after this it wouldnt need a player to consistently trying leveling up a toon, i can see the reason for it especially considering how much work one needs to do. then as far as the content is concerned though, i mean the game has been out for a decade now, in computer gaming terms, thats ancient.
sto is a different story, the grinds can be done within 12 hours if you know what you are doing, but average around a day to a day and half total in game time to go from 1 to 50. to be honest there is no point in putting this in and the devs wouldnt be too pleased to learn their hard work was undone by this "i win" button cutting out all the content. i would then be forced to ask why bother with any factions or content when the "i win" button will automatically skip it.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
seeing some ppl will pay 600 to have a mount in the game i can see it just like some ppl here pay 500$ to trying and get a lockbox ship
I know, but leveling a char is something that everybody can do it, and for free. There is no need to pay 60$ xDDDDD. People must be stupid (or rich) if they pay for that.
I will never pay 100$ for a ship in STO, is hilarious. But i know a lot of people waste incredible ammounts of money in STO, i know that for a fact, because the game is still alive. And its the only way cryptic works. For me 100$ is almost 1/5 of my salary xDD. But cryptic seem not to be aware of the inflation of the prices. They dont care about anything, only about profit.
I think in age of conan something like that happened as well, but i stop playing ages ago so i cant say.
Anyways, when you have money to waste, usually u dont think in all of this, if you want something, you buy it. Now, reasonable people, even if they are rich, will never waste that ammount of money in any game, because its stupid and ridiculous. But not all of us are reasonable persons lol. A lot of users in STO are just kids, or rich people that can afford to waste 100% every month just in STO. Those are the customers that are providing cryptic the only way to keep STO alive. But of course those users dont care a sxxxit about fixing the bugs. Because if they will, they will not waste every month 100$. But people like to complain sometimes even if they dont have a clue what they are complaining about.
So WoW has been experimenting with selling fully leveled characters to people.
What do you think? Would this be an option for Cryptic?
I'd love to be able to buy a lvl 50 char incl. the reputation fully unlocked.
Why?
Because I want to min/max a build without having to spend tons of time on it. I'd rather spend the money.
How?
This option could be restricted to people who have at least levelled and fully rep'd one character of the specific faction and maybe also career sought after. This way people would still play the game but not be forced into re-playing everything tons of time when they don't want to.
Mirror Universe Incursion, before it vanished alongside the rest of the hourlies, made level-capping something that took a handful of hours (and it paid well).
and this why we have a rep system why stf's got hit with a nerf bat from hek because casual players and thats what will be the downfall of wow...... it not hard to look and see it
I casually play, and can hit lvl 50 in a week or two if I really put it off. Old STFs were not difficult they were fun with a bit of challenge. Played games with difficult dungeons EQ. With WoW however you can level extremely fast too, within a week be max level in that game too according to my friends at least.
I miss MMORPG's that made it challenging to level up, and gave you a sense that you actually earned that level.
There are tons of things from other mmos I'd like to see in STO...
....also I'd really like to see it being easier (even with sponsorship) for alts to get the rep...

It's not a waste to the person. People will, if they can, drop a lot of money on their hobbies. I know a person who spent a grand or more on a stamp for his collection. I had another friend who spent a ton on a new high end graphics card when it first came out for his gaming rig. Look how much hardcore gamers are willing to spend on their rigs. I could go on.
The level boost comes free when you buy the expansion that is coming up. Therefore they are not paying more for it, yet anyway.

i can tell you them friends knows the ends and outs of the game know what quest to pick up when to leave a zone for a better one for some one new to the game would be lost if they did not know what they where doing wow requires knowledge of the game and the class you pick you just cant hit space bar and bam!! bady go down like we do in sto boss's in wow raids and so on are no joke you just cant like sto stf go it pew pew every thing down in mins
This attempt by WoW smells desperation, the masters must be demanding more money from WoW.
its possible blizzard has finally come to the point that WoW has reached its end, so now it's attempt for last second milking the system before a sudden announcement to shut down the game.

They still have over 9 million players. No other sub-based MMO comes close to them in that regard. WoW will go Hybrid FTP like LotRO long before it closes its doors - and they already offer the first 20-25 levels for free on their site.

Its nothing new in WoW anyways, their recruit-a-friend program pretty much gave you a level 60 character if you were new to the game which included a fast leveling buff. Like another poster said, this game has four times as much players as the competition, so I don't see the game going f2p for a long time.

Because a games company spends a shed load of cash on developing a new expansion with all its' associated content, raids, BGs, Arena, dungeons, gear etc when they have decided it has reached the end of it's shelf life. Then throw in the expense of publicising it, getting it out to the market etc.
As cosmic said, they have 9mil subscribers. Other newer games have either gone f2p, dual model or just shut down yet they have stayed at a high level subscription wise, even in an economic turn down.

Cosmic never said it would happen soon, he said it was likely they would go to that model before they shut it down, whenever that may be we don't know.
Recruit a friend is not a world wide thing. In a number of EU countries the service was not, or still is not, available due to the laws of those countries. The character boost will not fall foul of them as it comes with the expansion.

give me $60 I level your character for you.
that's a joke btw.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I dont know what Blizzard will do, but what i dont want is them to change their way of work. I love Blizzard, its maybe the only company that i really trust, because all their products are quality superior. As simple as that. They really care about having a clean and stable product, no matter what. They care about fixing bugs (at least more than any other companies) and they definitely care about customers, not as much as all we want, but they do. They care about having their products in all languajes possible (not like sto, for example, ridiculous how you can only put it on 4 different languajes.. hilarious). And all their games are really well-made.
They care about having only 2 or 3 titles that they treat as children (not like cryptic, with 10 titles and almost all of em full of bugs, specially STO).
If i need to pay for someting from any company , it will be Blizzard. I still have starcraft 2 with 2 adquired campaigns and i didnt even started the second one lol, because i am not in a hurry. I really like to enjoy Blizzard games.
Even if Blizzard will do something stupid like that, selling for 60$ leveled players, i dont care since, on the opposite to other companies (that im not going to name LOL), they deserve to have profits by time to time lol.
When I started playing, I was still working outside the home, with a commute of over an hour each way most days (traffic sucks). I was able to play maybe a mission or two per night, skipping some nights to spend time with my family.
I still hit 50 in less than two weeks. What do you mean, "too slow"? Do you need better ADD meds?
Comments

Recruit a friend is not a world wide thing. In a number of EU countries the service was not, or still is not, available due to the laws of those countries. The character boost will not fall foul of them as it comes with the expansion.
system Lord Baal is dead
give me $60 I level your character for you.
that's a joke btw.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
