A completely new person to STO who spent $60 on a level 50 Vice Admiral character is indistinguishable from a person who leveled to 50 but are still clueless as evidenced by the public queues.
So I would really see no difference. Only now the people who spent $60 have an excuse for being idiots. The people who have played for four years and are still clueless don't have that excuse.
I have always said, in RPG with levels (and they all have a level system), you should be able to reroll at the level you have reached on a former character. Let's say you play a human tac and have reached level 30, you should be able to start an alt at level 30. So you don't have to replay the same game content for a character that is just slightly different.
This is what I call the class paradox. We have different classes, but they all have to go through the same story, the same level path, the same game content. What is the point of being different if you have to do the same? It's like saying, when a carpenter goes to the shop to buy milk its is different then when a blacksmith buys milk.
Unless there is a complete new game experience, the player should be able to bypass game content he already has seen. In most cases, players that reroll do it for min maxing or roleplaying reason, not to relearn the system.
STO is easy on this because you can level so fast. The other day I destroyed a character and rerolled. I boosted the leveling by doing a lot of patrol mission. I hit 50 halfway through the Romulan arc. It took me two weaks. It is great because now I can skip and pick. The rewards are mk XI, I can work on my reputation, any thing, but my God, what was flying that Miranda, with torpedo HY boring.
Now take some kid with a credit card, let them buy their level 50, with zero tutorial experience, zero time in knowin the differences between beam, dual beam bank, and cannon, no idea how to balance their shields or anything, and then since the only thing to do at level 50 is to join STFs, you get this literally newb in your STF.
Gosh, so many of those posts in this thread. Funny how you complain about people just buying themselves up to 50 not knowing the game at all. What was suggested is to have access to that option AFTER you have some max level char of the specific faction and maybe also career. That's far different from what you complain about.
Kinda ironic how people complain about noobs suddenly being at 50 while they themselves give a **** about actually reading and understanding what's written in the very first post of the thread.........
although I can see why people would want to. the game is pretty easy to grind up. for reputations you now have the sponsorship tokens which can half the grind time on alts. I could see something like this actually doing more harm than good to the game. sorry op.
Why would you want to pay for a max level character? You miss out on all the gameplay(I know for some that could be a bore for them) and chances to make EC and DIL along the way. I wouldn't do it personally.

In wow the lvl90 has no reputations relivant to the expansion unlocked... in this game its also easier to level to 50 than sneezing.
Basically they'd not give you the reps so all you'd get is a fresh lvl50, my thoughts would be they'd only charge $20 for this 'honor' as tbh its a bit of a silly idea for this game. Also if you haven't played the new revaped starting areas your missing out don't waste money.
But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet, Tread softly because you tread on my dreams

I am pretty new to MMOs, STO being the 1st I have played. I also only read through the 1st 5 pages of this thread.....
I do not see the option to buy a level 50 character for those players who have already played through the game and have attained the Vice Admiral rank and have also completed the main story line. At this point the player is already a veteran of the game and generally knows what he or she is doing (supposedly). As long as the new character does not start off with anything other than standard issue weapons and equipment for the characters (Vice Admiral & Bridge Officers) and ships. Since standard issue weapons and equipment have no EC value it's not like you can strip all your ships and sell the stuff to make quick ECs to buy better equipment.
Then again, I avoid PvP action, I prefer doing the main story (although I abandoned that for the moment) and just random types of missions for now just to get a feel for what I want to focus on. Two focuses for now would be dilithium farming and upgrading my Doffs (expanding slots and replacing common with rare when I have the EC to do so). I prefer going the lone wolf route for the moment and partake in co-op missions for marks and dilithium.
Perhaps Cryptic should sell a token which allows players to not only respec their characters, but also to change class... then again Cryptic would earn more money by simply allowing veteran players the option to just buy a maxed out character.
I don't think there should ever be an option to buy your way through everything. Why? Very simple. The whole point of a game is the challenge. You start at level 1 and work your way up to level 50, learning about different builds and ships, and what works for you along the way. And you stay active and interested because you want to see what happens next and see how good you're getting. Now, say you start a new game, and use the option to pay to get a maxxed out character with everything unlocked. Now you have access to everything, and you decide to buy all the dilithium, zen, and ec you need because you're lazy and don't want to work for it. Now you can get the most powerful gear and whatever ship you want and go beat up on everyone else.
Aaaaand, you get your TRIBBLE kicked. And again, and again. So you figure it has to be the equipment and setup, so you try something else you read about. And you fail yet again. Why? Because you never bothered to learn how to use what you've got. Never had to try a mission again and again, and learn how everything works. You just got whooped by the guy who took the time to level up his character the right way, and who's spent endless hours piecing together his own ship and learn all its strengths and weaknesses. You'll never be a match for him. So you quit and move in to something else.
Or, you beat everybody. Its your first day playing, and you bought your way to the top and smoked every other player. Now you're bored, so you quit and move on to something else. Either way, youbno longer have any interest in the game because you have nothing more to look forward to. Nothing to work for and achieve.
