ESD Orbital Drydocks, Could we make these usable ?

adverberoadverbero Member Posts: 2,045 Arc User
Just a thought, We have these Orbital Drydocks all around ESD, and they can be used to take cool screenshots if you like

But my question is this, Could a system be put in place to make these drydocks into a repair contact, So that instead of having to go down onto the Spacedock and talk to the Engineer, We could fly to a drydock, Hit an interact and have our ships fixed

This would save a map transition, But more to my point is it would make them Useful, Since they are ignored by many it might be cool to give them a purpose that might actually be used

I would be in favor of this. Would be nice to have a reason to go there other then rp and general sightseeing.

I would be in favor of this, too.

I was really excited to hear Mr. Stephen D'Angelo's take on things he'd like to see in the game, and one of them was to make Earth Space Dock more fun and immersive (also functional)... a place where you feel "you're really in Star Trek".

In my opinion, usable Orbital Drydocks at ESD is a great idea... right along the lines of Mr. D'Angelo's philosophy!

    This is a good idea.

Maybe they could go the extra mile and adding a docking or departing mini-cutscene, giving us that Trek flair.

It's little things like this that would make me like this game millions of times more. Add docking/departing cutscenes for ESD and maybe DS9 and 39S, give drydocks a function, create a cutscene of your captain sitting down in his chair before you return to the tactical view, make your BOFFs not all hit their combadges before beaming up like you do... etc.

(On a larger scale, and a bit further off-topic, I'd like to see alien vessels become more of a niche thing than anything else, rather than top-tier in basic Starship classes. ESD should be filled with (normally-sized) Starfleet (And Vulcan, and Caitian, and Andorian, etc.) ships, not alien craft from every corner of the galaxy. No idea why CBS has no problem with this.)

IT would be cool to see, but I'd be for being able to skip these scenes if I so choose. Plus I think the devs got a bunch of stuff to work on first.

I've had this thought. I semi-approached it in my blog about Vulcan. But I plan on going into more detail when I do the Academy and Earth. I'll probably do those separately.

Look in my sig for a link.

Aaah, if only these forums had the option of a poll. I'd vote in favor immediately.

Like has been said, it are the little things that can enhance the Trek feeling in this game. Function to dry docks, not beaming up from your bridge when you swap to ship view. Ofcourse the Devs are by now busy working on Season 9: Fluid Dynamics (concept name made up by me, nothing official). But if it was possible for one dev to squeeze in some little time to also manage the idea in this forum, I'd be terribly happy.

Now, if only an Excelsior Bridge pack could also be added....... :P

    A slight modification or addition...

One smaller aspect of this: Perhaps we could get a simple 'repair animation' when we fly a ship into the space drydocks - like a number 'lasers' (beams of light) of various colors that 'capture' the ship and do what seems to be 'repairing' the ship while it's in the dock, an advanced version would have them 'trace' the ship like beam weapons currently do in combat.

No affect on movement, but while it's in the drydock, the beams would just be there, for screenies and general whoop-de-do-dee-ness...
Please reconsider ARC. Please make it optional, at the least. PLEASE.
It seems the vast majority of your most active players (forum regulars) hate the idea... and while that's a small subset of the playerbase, I think it's an important constituency.
THE PLAYERS DO NOT WANT THIS.

    I love this idea.

Have never really been a huge fan of 'new ship = ESD'. Having a new ship launch from either one of the Drydocks that the OP refers to, or the UP fleet yards, would make FAR more sense.

Yes, and this game could use a lot more background details.

This truly is an excellent idea, it would reduce the sequences/map transitions and the clicks. Very very good idea. An animation such as the baryon sweep seen in TNG would go a long way to this as well however lets try to avoid the topic going sideways by adding less feasible wishes in other areas such as cutscenes (despite the fact it would be very cool).

I've thought about that before myself.

I also love to use them for cool screenshots, when the game first came out, every time I got a new ship, I would roll it into a dock and do a series of TMP/ST:II "beauty shots" of my new ship.

Over the years it's fewer and far between, I still do it on my main when he get's a new ship though.

I did the same!, I kinda wish when we buy new ships it would spawn in the docks instead of the regular area that would be cool

I like all of this, also further to the sitting down for tactical view a standing up when in reverse like when you select the visit bridge option, and the feature should be changed from visit bridge to leave tactical view, I would also like that when you beam up you appear on the ship transporter pad and have to go to the bridge to select the tactical view.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Why not make it a doff of converting the ship to a hybrid experimental class. Meaning, allow the success or critical success makes faction specific skin available for a specific faction, change the prefix to a expiremental class, and then allow recolored bridge skins. Player can opt out. If they do run the ship with the skin, they get some special buff.

At the very least i would like to be able to take screenies while in the dock from all angles without the camera cramming into the front or side of my ship.

I mean FFS dont hit box the camera angles!

Also i would like to be able to fix ship via piloting into the drydocks.
    +1

And Disable the "autodock" on the space doors, makes it really hard to take a screenie of entering, but i would also like to take screenies of exiting.....

One more thing, +1 to a poll section on the forum. Suggestions sent in to Community managers who weed through, and then final list sent on to the DEV team to pick a few. This way we see what they are willing to do, and vote on it.

I really like the idea of using drydocks for repairs. I would really like to see the entire Sol System be able to travel to... Mars, Luna colony, etc. Utopia Planetia would be great to see as well.

The only problem I see in having the shipyards functional as suggested, is that it would become very crowded there. What with the massive amount of people AFK in Sol at any time, this would become something of a hassle to use. Imagine, 20+ people trying to cram their ships into the Dry Docks at any given time and 10+ more people already inside them and AFK.

Solution: Add a lot more of the Docks to the area, or put several "dock hubs" in to replace the existing single docks. (dock hub used here to describe the look of the T4-5 fleet shipyard) The could even be made into multi-tier hubs, with 4 docks per tier.

I do love the idea, don't misunderstand. I do see how its implementation could cause issue though.

Also, where would I park now!? :D

I doubt it would become crowded, people would get tire of it fast. The ones who would do such a thing would be griefers.

Sorry, but I don't see the logic of adding those multi-drydock platforms would prevent "parkers". Besides, that shipyard design is very uncanonical, while the single ones been seen since TMP.

And they don't need to add more docks since only a faction of players even need repairs to their ships, since most don't play Advanced or Elite content enough it could cause such a problem. They could some normal docks alongside the functional ones, where the functional ones wouldn't let anyone approach unless they are damaged (which allows you to dock).

They can make a map bigger a few more planets and docks. Then add as many docks wherever you want. If a player docks at the outer docks, a shuttle or transport cutscene can be done. Moving the player from the secondary dock to the main spacedock.

    Just saying.
