Star Trek Continues and STO

lordoffilinglordoffiling Member Posts: 33 Arc User
For those who haven't heard yet, we have new episodes of Star Trek The Original Series. These are apparently to be considered canon episodes.

http://www.startrekcontinues.com/

My question is, have the STO team had the opportunity to see any of these episodes yet? If so, would they be willing to make reference to them in the game?

    That would likely be legally...problematic.
You're right. The work here is very important.

As much as I like the fan series and their dedication to Star Trek, I'm afraid their works are not official Star Trek canon.

would need some kind of proof from CBS endorsing the webseries to believe it's Star trek canon.

Links, quotes, endorsements and screenshots or it never happened. Who says they're canon? You?

Let's see, cursory review of their website reveals:

    -Not licensed by CBS
-Not considering THEMSELVES canon outside of their own continuity
-Their kickstarter page explicitly saying their show is only possible because of CBS's generous tolerance of unlicensed fan productions.

"Well, Adam, that sounds just about busted to me, right?"
"Well, yeah, Jaime, for any other show. But now we're going to see if it's still not canon after we fire Buster out of a canon into an olympic sized pool full of gasoline with an episode of the show clamped in his hands."
    "What will that prove?"
"That our show is still worth its budget!"

Star Trek : Bridge Commander is more canon that anything I saw on that page... At least it had real Star Trek actors in it.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Okay okay, let's not jump down my throat here! The website that linked me to the web series introduced them as being new episodes in the canon, I suppose I jumped the gun a bit and assumed they were canonical. Sheesh.

OP, expect contrariness from the genners, this is not their Trek and they will belittle it anyway they can lest they succumb to what real Trek is.

That said, Thank you for the link. I was skeptical at first, but it turned out to be first rate.

These people understand Star Trek and are building on the series that even the genner reviled JJ has realized is the real definitive Trek.

Well, this series is never going to work...

Nobody in their wildest dreams can POSSIBLY out-overact the majestic Shatner :)

See, if they weren't trying to replace the original crew, i might think again. i mean, why couldn't this be the voyages of, for example, the Farragut? Your already a fan thing, that kind of gives you a reason to NOT be bound to the established characters.

I've never really followed any of the fan-made series, but I've gotta say, CBS's tolerance of them is astonishing.

maybe http://startrekrenegades.com stands the best chance of something coming of any of the non cbs backed productions.

    indeed.

i'd be more inclined to consider this cannon, but only in a JJ-trek, alternate universe-ish sort of way. and that's only if cbs says it.

I love when people say that. Canon was once considered only ever TOS. TNG changed that, then DS9 changed that, then some novels changed that. Canon is never stagnant, canon is added to and increased every year.

So what you are saying is that the only people with the authority to decide what is and isn't canon are the people that own the IP. Meaning CBS.

It's almost as if someone owns property, they can decide what to do with it.

Hey now, let's not jump to conclusions here. I think we need the mythbusters back into the thread to determine if the people who own the property are allowed to decide what to do with it.

Then maybe he should have let TOS inspire him for his Star Trek movies instead Star Wars A New Hope.

No, people would still find reasons to hate it. Star Trek fans have been hating Star Trek movies for not being "Star Trek" ever since TMP.

    QFT.

The anger at the JJ-prise doesn't come close to fan rage about the death of Spock and the militarization of Starfleet via that "controversial" and "non-Trek" film, The Wrath of Khan.

Both Star Trek and the original Star Wars share excitement and action, something their decendants lack.

JJ did it the right way.

Oh for the love of pete, they introduced the technology as being new and experimental in the episode. Scottie walked right through the cowboy hologram. We have that technology *today*, why couldn't they have it on a Connie?
