Well, after 7 hrs I'm back in game; uninstalled the spyware TRIBBLE Arc and installed STO through Steam.
Thx for tips and good luck to future ARC resisters.

Well I've installed STO with Arc a few months ago (didn't had a clue what Arc was) but I had the same issues with LotRO so leave Arc there and just find your STO launcher icon:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek Online\Perfect World Entertainment\Star Trek Online_en.exe

It starts the Launcher no problem, bypassing Arc. Make sure you "run as administrator" as it sometimes bugs otherwise but I never had any problems.

Arc just sits there, desperately waiting to be used... but that won't happen again!
    Works for me!
    Cheers!

Had to reinstall, would not from my old disk, and ended up with Arc.
Thank you for this, problem solved, works like a charm!

Just got a new gaming rig, networked it up with my existing set-up, copied the whole sto folder over (about 13g/20 mins). Made a shortcut for the launcher and been playing problem/ARC free. :)

My answer to Arc is very simple. Steam.

And Steam even offers something that is impossible to get any other way: the Steamrunner Escorts. You can't buy them from ZEN, not from Arc, just from Steam.

Sorry to ask (another) stupid question, but what is this "Steam" thing I keep reading about?

Steam is launcher program similar to ARC, it's tied into an online store, forums, and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's been around for years and there are probably thousands of games available through it, so its a bit more trusted then this new ARC program.

Personally, I haven't dealt with ARC yet, so I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on it.

well i dont see the point of even going trough all this a single copy paste from the arc dir and then just uninstalling arc will work just fine ... or just copy sto's shortcut on the desktop and forget that arc even exist

Or bypass the use of Arc altogether and use the standalone installer in my sig.

-- You didn't need it to play STO before. Why should you expend the extra computer resources now? Some of us (not me) play STO on a bare-bones laptop where extra processes like Arc really do affect the game.

-- Arc ****s with other overlays. Some of us use things like TeamSpeak for voice chat. I've seen at least one report of Arc ****ing up a heavily macro'd gaming mouse as well.

-- It's adware and spyware PWE is forcing on us because they want more players for their other games. Personally, STO is the only MMO I play and the only one I'm interested in playing, so PWE can go **** themselves. EDIT: I signed up for STO because I wanted to play a Star Trek space game and GOG.com doesn't have Starfleet Command or Bridge Commander.

-- Everything it does besides play PWE games other than STO, Steam already has for over a decade and does way better. Buying zen is quick and painless with Steam Wallet and works every time, whereas I can't count the number of problems I've seen people report with trying to buy zen through other channels.

Just so we're clear, I have a lot of the same objections (and others) to Steam and Origin and so forth. Steam in particular I refused to use for years because the client didn't have a download scheduler, meaning Team Fortress 2 often killed my family's data cap when I wasn't looking. We've gotten a better Internet connection since then so that's not an issue anymore, and Steam's ancillary services (especially one-button screenshotting) have proven very useful. And you cannot beat Steam's sale prices.

Origin ... well, I hate EA's business practices in general so I only added it after Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age II went on 50% off sale last Christmas. They're quite literally the only games I actually bought through Origin. (I have others in the client, but they came from other channels.) Plus, it doesn't have a built-in one-button screenshot function like Steam does (though you can work around that by booting Origin through Steam).

As if PWE wants to validate all the haters' objections, we now have reports that Arc ****s up STO directly, because PWE can't program their way out of a paper bag and/or actively hates its customers.

PWE: Fire your quality assurance and customer service teams and get ones that majored in something other than girls at college.

STO Players: DON'T. ****ING. USE. ARC. If you're stupid enough to do so, you frankly deserve the trouble you're signing up for.

Here's another one: the "don't share data" checkbox apparently doesn't work. sunfrancks caught it trying to access data after he had specifically told it not to.

I have been running STO without ARC through the advice in this thread. Just use start icon from STO folder without booting ARC. Since S8 game will still start this way but crash to desktop every time I try to start a mission etc.
Not willing to play with pos ARC running in background. Any ideas why this is happening now, was fine in S7. Any fix?

    Thanks,
    Waff

Well solved my own problem it seems so an FYI for others.

I just uninstalled ARC completely and did a new install from Starswords sig link in the posts above mine. Guess there was a conflict.

Having cleaned all traces of ARC from my comp did a fresh install with the sig link and now all works fine again. 1/2 hour start to finish. TY Starsword. (I'm afraid our chinese overlords may not be pleased...).

Hope you can help. The folders "Cryptic Studios" and after does not exist on this laptop I'm using even though I can get on STO with ARC. No matter what I do I can't find anything past PWE other than ARC related. Is there any way I can get all the folders?

Cryptic Studios or Star Trek Online should be on there somewhere, maybe it's in the Arc folder.
We'll see how things play out, I can only hope that they are not stupid enough to make it so that Arc needs to be running to play STO, if that happens that's it for PWE on my computer.

WARNING: Massive (3.5GB) download is required. Download accelerators/managers and/or premium accounts recommended but not required.

2nd WARNING: DO NOT uninstall Arc/STO yet.

Okay, here is my guide to creating an install of STO that does not have Arc in it.

First thing's first, DO NOT REMOVE your current install of STO/Arc. We still need the data files, or you will have to re-download an entire year-and-a-half's worth of patches & seasons. Don't worry, it will be taken out soon, though.

Secondly, you will need around 14GB of free hard drive space. We will be performing a little transfer of files, and the data files consume the most space.

Next, you will need one of the older installers. You need the Full Install, which is around 3.5GB. I'm afraid there's no getting around this requirement. Here are a few links:

    We're almost there.

Unpack the installer files into a temporary directory, but do not run it yet. Delete the files in the installer's PIGGS directory, and replace them with files from your current install.

The files from your current install are located here: Doing this will update the installer's data files to the current latest version.

    NOW you may uninstall Arc.

One final step: Install STO from the installer we just updated. It will take a while, and fortunately for us the installer will not mind that the hogg files are different and much larger than the originals. When completed, run the game as normal. The launcher will update itself to the latest version, and download the game's latest binaries.

Star Trek Online is now installed without Arc.

Optional: Save a copy of the installer onto a thumbdrive so you don't have to re-download every time you need to reinstall. Update the hogg files to keep the installer up-to-date. You will need to re-format the drive to NTFS, as one of the datafiles (bins.hogg) will possibly exceed the 4GB size limit.
Why don't you just get it on steam
That is how I hav it and I don't have arc :)

If I might make a recommendation? I would suggest that everyone just buy the disc. I got mine at gamestop several years ago for about 30 bucks. I never have login problems, it doesn't lag too often, and its right there if I ever need to uninstall it.

Thanks for the fast reply. Sadly Cryptic Studios and Star Trek Online both don't show on the search and only showing for ARC is ARC itself, Repair and Uninstall. After first time using I pinned the STO launcher to taskbar, when I opened launcher it patched and failed and needed to run as admin which can't be done. Only ARC can be run as admin so yes I have to open it every time.

I miss the computer I used when I started on STO as no ARC at the time.

You won't find it from the start search window, you need to open Windows explorer and look in the folder Program Files or Program Files (X86)
I would also recommend going to User Account Control Settings and moving the slider all the way down to Never notify, the UAC is one of the stupidest things Microsoft has ever put into an OS and I turn it off in every install I do.

Wow thank you so much. I was never told to look there and would of thought finding the screenshot files itself would been found on the search. Thank you again. I've found it now.

    *Reserved for future use*

Alternative: Install it via steam. Once installed remove the desltop link and set a direct one to the game file. => no ARC => no active Steam.

I had Arc and Steam and uninstalled them before seeing this, it doesn't effect the game if I reinstall Arc and or Steam, then follow the steps?
