Really looking forward to S8, but there's one thing about fighting in a Dyson Sphere that made me remember.
I just hope that they can find a way to make it so when ships are exploding while fighting in the Dyson Sphere/in a planet's atmosphere, the ships are dragged down to the ground and either explode on impact or before impact. I just don't like seeing the ships sort of float around for a bit after they're destroyed, and then explode again. I don't know if the physics engine would even allow for such a variable to be added, and even if it could, how would it be defined what a "planet" is on a map? Where would the gravitational pull be coded to? How would it be coded?
You know, I think I just defeated my own argument.
As I was reading two thoughts popped into my head. "Hmm escorts are gonna hate that full damage reflection shield thing" and "Haha the park and fire escorts are gonna have to watch out for the seeking charges".
I foresee in season 8...
There will be no more lockboxes ...
thats right ... no more lockboxes ...
instead it will be replaced with something more awesome ...
dyson lockedspheres ...
*faint*
I like the way you came up with a unique combat mechanic for the Voth.
However, as soon I finished reading the article, my only thought was, I'm staying as far away from Voth ships as I can!
I don't fault you for making them overpowered.
As they are technologically superior to the Borg, I'd have been disappointed if they'd have been anything less then this.
But still, I'm going to be very concerned about fighting them in space.
It seems I'll spend most of my time avoiding shooting the Voth, which will prolong the battle greatly.
Bees like honey, they don't like vinegar.

Looks like science and engineering captains will finally become more useful. And threat control might be critiqual for a successful battle. I like it a lot.
on the Screenshots the HUGE SCALE of the ship just doesn't come across,
the textures are placed like on any other smaller ship,
i see the patterns in the texture and my brain translates that to its size
...
look at this: http://s14.directupload.net/images/131019/7zymrcna.png
Maybe in 3D or in movement that may *feel* different but judging from the Screenshots alone... mmmh nope, not working for me.
Thank you, those ships look awesome. My hope is that the frigate and the cruiser will be selected for the lockbox promotion.
Also some badass new space combat tactics and powers there. I got atm (and alot of peaple do too) full energy builds, like on escort types front 4/5 dhcs + 2 turets+KCB rear and on cruiser/carrier full beams, so for sure i'll have to slot a torpedo somewhere for those acetons and energy absorbing skills, like maybe a harph'eng on fed/kdf ships and on rom ships that bio-molecular warhead from Mind Games episode, at least until we can get something better from the voth rep
And indeed i like alot the fact that now the sci and engie captains will be more apreciated, and the DPS race madness that is now in the STFs wont work here. Great work, keep it up.
I can tell the Voth will be very annoying to combat.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
Having played "Storming the spire" on elite, I'm no longer worried about how bad the Voth ships look since they are destoryed long before you can get a good look at them. Even the massive Dreadnaught only took a minute, I guess it's based on the Super Star Destroyer in The Return of the Jedi which was taken out by an A-wing. :P Yes yes I've seen the Vovager Voth eposide and the ship looks like it. StS is one of those Foundry EC grind missions, AFK Cryptic style. I thought that when Cryptic got more staff the game would get better, how wrong could I be. :(:(

im sure as we get clsoer to release for it, the voth ships will get harder for you.
I like the look of the Dreadnought and Battleship, but what's up with the glowing tats on em? The abilities these things bring are going to make fighting them a bit tricky, looking forward to it. I'll admit. . . I want their torpedos. Not interested in their take on antiproton though.
One thing that concerns me is the size of the ships. We saw in the Voth episode that their city ship dwarfed even borg cubes. While I don't expect ships of that size to appear in game (at least not yet, though im hoping) will the Dreadnought at least be the size of the Borg mothership we fight in the Red Alerts?
Probably bigger.
As we approach the time of the Delta Quadrant I'd like to know who else would like to see the Monument from the Voyager Episode Memorial.
With in the first minute of reading this the first thing that came to mind was that the dev just got done watching "Wingman's Hangar" with the whole "in spaaaace" thing. oh the irony if that were truly the case,
Anyone taking bets on how soon these ships will be nerfed like the Borg were?
Anytime this game adds in new things that require actual tactics to overcome, people just whine and whine till it is nerfed down into being the same as every other enemy we face.
Breen power drain was nerfed, Borg firepower was nerfed, and so were the Undine's ship regenration. Not to mention all the nerfs to the Elachi.
I'm betting two weeks after launch all the escort players will complain about blowing themselves up so often fighting these guys, that we see most of their powers removed.
Hell, just think about back when the romulan defender de'driex came out accidentally, and how everyone completely freaked out because it could heal itself and didn't die in 5 secs like every other rom ship.
They'd better not. I want more interesting enemies to fight.
As we approach the time of the Delta Quadrant I'd like to know who else would like to see the Monument from the Voyager Episode Memorial.
The device that gives everyone the memory of being a murderous war criminal? I would only want such a sadistic device in game if I got to plaster the whole planet with Photon Torpedoes.
I know I'm not the only one who thinks that the "Memorial" is really mass indoctrination tool to use on troops so they will have the memory of killing people they would otherwise consider to be innocents and thus be willing to pull the trigger in future combat.
My Romulan Liberated Borg character made it to Level 30 and beat the (old) Defense of New Romulus with the skill point bug.

Did you not watch the whole episode?
The easiest way to prevent people from committing crimes like that is for them to SEE (Experience the memory in this case) those very crimes being committed.
Not hear about the aftermath, or read about it on the base of a statue.

If this is true why do we still have repeat offenders of such crimes? The likelihood of, let's say, a civilian, in their lifetime being involved in such activities is extremely low. So why subject them to these memories if their ship just so happened to be passing by?

Well 1st off what gives the right to the people who built that thing to indiscriminately telepathically violate the minds of anyone who flew near that system? Making people believe that they committed war crimes then doing that to hundreds, thousands, perhaps millions of people is a heinous crime just as bad as the murder that took place on that world.
And 2nd what makes those people think that everyone who encounters that device will react the same way? There could very well be some alien culture who on experiencing that would relish in it.
finally 3rd all we have is Janeway and a translated inscription saying that this is a memorial to those killed. We have no cultural or political context over the construction of this device or of the massacre. If the group that built that thing were some kind of murderous fanatics who saw the colonists presence as wrong that inscription could be interpreted in the opposite way; words can't convey the suffering (of having non believers on this world), words alone can't prevent such people coming here form coming here again.
My Romulan Liberated Borg character made it to Level 30 and beat the (old) Defense of New Romulus with the skill point bug.
Voth Citadel-class Dreadnaughts and "these ships have been fitted with an internal wide-angle torpedo deployment system, allowing them to fire Transphasic Chroniton projectiles at any target nearby. Additionally, they can use this torpedo deployment system to project a series of seeking charges at all nearby targets, causing massive damage to any stationary enemy." makes me think they added another 1 hit kill super torpedo lhats impossible to defend against because it happens so fast you do not see it coming like the Borg do now. Instead of a Tachyon shield drain then torpedo we will get "multiple Aceton Drones" followed by the ever fun 1 hit kill torpedo's is what I am expecting. It's a lame mechanic for Borg please prove me wrong Cryptic.
As for the final thoughts part, we have borg tac cubes as outlined above and the Donatra for this little number, "frigates cloak defensively to become difficult to target or to flee." But happily the Donatra is a good mechanic adding challenge instead of just insta death by magic torps and plasma. So The ships look good and could possibly be a good fight but I have mixed feelings on weather it will be good or just annoying. Annoying like 1 hit kills that are unavoidable.

EDIT: This is going to be very interesting once I get to the Voth in my fanfic...just how the hell is a Type V civilization going to deal with a borderline Type III like the Voth? O_o
Type V? Able to channel a sizable fraction of an entire universe? That's almost Q level. By comparison, civilizations like the Federation are at the upper end of Type I, and the ability to construct Dyson Spheres is a mid-Type II ability.
As we approach the time of the Delta Quadrant I'd like to know who else would like to see the Monument from the Voyager Episode Memorial.
That could make a good story for the game. But knowing cryptic they would probably dumb it down so much that I would rather not see it in the game. Nemesis could be another good one to add.

We only saw the effect on crew when the monument wasn't fully powered. it seems that once it was at full power, the effects were much less traumatic on the rest of the crew. An that what made the episode interesting that a party thought that a crime was so hideous that they thought that such drastic measures were needed to try and prevent other people from committing such crimes.

May be they thought they would always control that portion of space and that only their own people would see the monument. May be they didn't think about it from that point of view.
I guess I'm coming a little too late in this topic, but could we get a size comparison chart for the Voth ships (like we got for Tholian vessels)? Pretty please.
Also, thanks for the larger screens in the blog (like in a couple latest blogs - hope this feature stays).
