To be honest, every new game from any popular franchise is always 'the one' that will shut STO down. I have yet to see it happen.
Besides, Call of Duty? Meh, those games stopped being original a LONG time ago (except Halo, that series is still excellent). The only people that will probably buy that are the exact same people who bought the last one.
ESO? I'm itching for it, but it won't be out until next year. Same with Star Citizen. So until they ARE out, anything said is speculation.
I gotta agree with this. Doom ad nauseum. This game may run its course due management errors, or because PWE financially implodes (sigh... dreams...), or for whetever reason, but the only game that could ever be the direct cause of this one's demise is another Star Trek MMO.
"So my fun is wrong?"
No. Your fun makes everyone else's fun wrong by default.
I see this as the calm before the storm Cryptic have been overly generous with stuff
First Free Z store goodies
second a Lobi store sale where we voted for the thing we wanted on sale
third they are rereleasing the CE event
four account bound lobi that we have been shouting about for years
I believe something is coming that a lot of people will not like
And I can tell you exactly what it is...the mandatory use of their data mining/spyware/malware/bloatware disaster known as ARC. They know from all the ARC threads that the vast majority of players do not want this (some don't want the data mining/spyware/malware/bloatware at all, others prefer different data mining/spyware/malware/bloatware programs such as STEAM or RAPTR). What they are doing is a classic business ploy...butter up the customer base with goodies before slapping them in the face with an unpopular product. No-one, not an individual person or a company, ever, ever, ever does anything for anyone without an ulterior motive or a catch. And their catch is going to be mandatory ARC.
I don't care what the header says, I am not now, nor have I ever been, nor will I ever be, an "ARC user".
Even if u don't give two sh@#s about lockboxes an lobi, some people did ask for this and well looks like its happening, the devs listened an we got. I say a step in any direction where we ask and get is a step in the right direction ( baby steps maybe but good baby steps ).
I asked for this and I for one am very happy about it!
I've got a large amount of Lobi on my KDF main and now I'll be able to use it for some of my ALTS.
And no, this won't affect the price of lobi ships much. Those ships cost a LOT and people who buy them are opening boxes in bulk, not spreading their lobi around. The people this change is going to help are those who open boxes on multiple characters for the per-character rewards, because now they can combine that lobi and get something with it.

I agree - but the point that I was trying to make is that Cryptic needs to take big steps -like account bound lobi - before major threats like Elder Scrolls Online (est Mar 2014 or 5 months) are released.
Elder scrolls online I think is a bigger threat right now than Star citizen - that could easily be pushed well into 2015 and even then it's not really as casual as STO.
Respectfully not everyone spends real money to get Lobi.
The Lobi I have wasn't from opening lockboxes. I got it from Doff packs and mission rewards.
And it didn't cost me any money as I used my monthly stipend to get it. And I broke even on my LTS long before the game went F2P.
So I look forward to pooling my Lobi and using it on characters that don't have enough to get a shiny bauble.
In all fairness it doesn't matter who's money it was. Once I traded the Dilithium for Zen it was my money to spend how I see fit. Thus I don't spend any of my money on Lockboxes, and I don't buy things that give me Lobi. Others are free to, but not me.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

ESO has been hyped way too much. I think the only threat is that people will be crushed to death under epic fail when it launches, and it turns out it doesn't cure cancer after all.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
According to our favorite breakfast cereal in the Release Notes for tomorrow's downtime... it looks to be coming to Holodeck right quick...
I'm still withholding judgement until after maintenance when I can log in and see how and if it works out.

Now they just need Mining Claims to be Account Bound and the Lockbox and Lobi Store will be completely fixed.
Not sure about the "completely fixed" part...,
But they certainly would be a bit more appealing.

Agreed,
All of my Lobi came from my Stipend and a boat load of Ec used to by Doff packs and Keys via the Exchange.

This is a definite yes!! at least now you can open the lockboxes on toons low on claims and just move the lobi around.
