    Bingo.

All through beta I was fine, and then whatever they did yesterday made my computer shut down all of a sudden. Randomly too, like I'll just be sitting sector space. - OFF - wtf?

Only happens with this game. I've played Arma2 and other games on high graphics, so I don't get it.

My computer doesn't FEEL hot. I have a top fan blowing down and a front and back fan - the tower is being cooled..

Honestly there is some coding problem that was JUST introduced this last patch.

It's not your computer nor anyone else's. There is no doubt a problem with STO

Absolutely. This game is the only app I run on my system that has ANY issues like this. I have this same crashing TRIBBLE every 1 to 1 1/2 hrs of play. No other game or MMO even comes close to this happening. Now to top it off, today every time I login it tells me my video cards drivers are out of date, and of course....they are perfectly fine, but STO now forces me to play at lower quality, and even then it can be choppy. I love this game, but as a product thus far, STO is a failure. I am to the point where I'm thinking of just shelving it until Summer and hope they work it out. Not once sat down for a session yet where the server, or the system didn't crash. At least Heavy Rain comes out Tuesday. :-) Thanks for letting me ***** guys.

I'll just post to say that I'm experiencing the exact same problems. And none of this occurred until yesterday afternoon, when I started playing after the patch. Hopefully the more people that the devs see having this problem, the faster we can get it resolved.

Friday night, game works perfectly. Zero problems. Saturday afternoon, as soon as I download the patch, hard crashes start every time I enter the game.

Shame too. I've been loving this game. But this is a lethal problem (at least for a game's longevity) that I hope is resolved quickly.

Yeah, I can't even get into the game. After the federation symbol appears it holds for a few moments, flashes blue like it's going to the start up screen then bam. Reset. It's got to be the patch. I haven't even gotten a chance to play the game yet. This always happens to me.

Like the rest of you, I was trekking about quite gleefully for an hour or two when my computer just shut off. Opened the case to see if anything was wonky, and noticed that the video card was HOT. Turns out that I had enough TRIBBLE in there to knit a nice beanie. It seemed to run okay again after cleaning, but it shut down AGAIN another hour or so later. STILL hot! Even taking off the side panel and having a fan blow air through the case did nothing, as it shut down on me a third freakin' time while still hot. It also has possibly b0rked my system, as not only do I get outright system lockups on trying to load into STO, it made World of Warcraft TRIBBLE itself as well. The moment I entered my password and tried to log in I got that now-familiar (and hated) hard drive click that heralds my system more or less curling into a little ball in the corner and gibbering quietly to itself.

Even curiouser is that I later ran Black & White to see if it would give me any guff, and it ran just fine. But, while listening to some music and puttering around online I got another lockup. *Eyetwitch.* Granted, I'm running an old Antec 550 watt power supply that was limping a bit already, but I think this managed to hamstring it and kneecap my video card for good measure. New parts have been ordered (been getting a video card error-beep now and then on system post), but this is perplexing to no end. Here, have some system specs for kicks and giggles:

    System Information
    Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

    Memory: 4096MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 4094MB RAM
Page File: 1431MB used, 6755MB available
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11

    Display Devices
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
    Chip type: GeForce 8800 GTS
    DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC

    Dedicated Memory: 613 MB
    Shared Memory: 1791 MB
    Current Mode: 1440 x 900 (32 bit) (61Hz)

Not sure if it makes any difference, but I'm also running twin monitors, but that should only be my video card's problem and nothing to do with the game, but at this point I'm not ruling out a damn thing. Cheers. :)

STO keeps causing my Graphic Card to shut off or cause my entire computer to shut down, Just bought this computer a few weeks ago

    My Specs

    Intel i7 CPU : Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) 8000K
Intel i7 CPU Fans : Coolermaster GeminII S, 5 Copper Heat Pipes, Dual Cooler CPU fan
Intel i7 Motherboards : MSI X58M, DDR3, SLI & Cross Fire, GB LAN, IEEE
    DDR3 Triple Channel memory : 12GB (6x2GB) PC3 12800 DDR3 1600 Triple Channel
PCI-Express Video cards : GeForce 9800GT 1GB PCI EXpress 16X dual head, HDMI
    Hard Drives : 1500.0GB Seagate 7200rpm SATA2 UDMA 300 32m Cache
Hard Drive Fans : Hard Drive Cooling Fan Aluminum Internal
    Hard Drives : 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 SATA2
Hard Drive Fans : Hard Drive Cooling Fan Aluminum Internal
DVD Recorders : Sony 24x DVD SATA Recorder Dual Layer +R/RW -R/RW
Media Card Readers : 12-in-1 Memory Card Reader Internal Black
Sound Cards : Realtek HD digital audio (onboard)
Network Cards : Ethernet network adapter (onboard)
Controller Cards : USB 2.0 Adapter Card 4 port PCI
Cases : Cooler Master Elite 310 black, Side Window, front USB
Case Fans : Dual Case Fans 120 mm Extra Quiet DC fan (two fans)
Power Supply : Ultra LSP 750W ATX Power Supply, SLI ready
Operating Systems : Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit DVD

My rig was totally custom, and havent had a problem running any games until I bought this game

750W should be more than enough to run my graphic card. I believe its a problem with the game because my computer has a snowballs chance in hell with overheating.

Just read this review, the PSU is your problem.

    http://hardocp.com/article/2008/02/06/ultra_x2_extreme_edition_750w_power_supply/

Hardocp exhaustively tested this "SLI READY" PSU and it sucks eggs.

If you don't want to read the article, the high points are.

Build quality is terrible. Low quality capacitors, badly soldered components, etc

    DC Output wildly varied.

Bottom line, bad build quality, bad voltage regulation and most importantly, COULD ONLY DELIVER 346 of the advertised 750 watts!

    Replace that piece of TRIBBLE!

I've been using the same machine with the same configuration since the closed BETA, but since the 2/19/10 update my machine now power resets (like the reset button was pressed) any time I'm online for more then a couple of minutes. Doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, even at the logon prompt.

    Intel X9770
    8 GB
    Win 7 Ultimate x64
    EVGA GTX 295
    Thermaltake TR2 RX 850 W PSU
4 Seagate 1 TB in RAID 5 configuration
    C: 654 GB of 749 GB Free
    D: 1.33 TB of 1.99 TB Free

    NVIDIA Driver Version: 8.17.11.9621 (1/11/2010)

I don't have any other problems with any other games. Tried running a series of video bench marks and no issues uncovered. I beleive I have more then enough power available. I haven't changed any of the hardware configuration since I hadded the the EVGA card back in October for the closed BETA. Thursday everything worked, Friday it didn't. Don't see how it can get any clearer then that?

I just tried turning off SLI, running in single GPU mode, and it seems to be working. I'll test it more later tonight to see if I can't crash it still. Curious why SLI would suddenly be broke?

Sounds to me like a heating issue, but it might be relatable to your hard drive or CPU.

Download speedfan, then prime95 and OCCT. Run them both for at leastl 10 minutes and see if you find any errors. They'll push your CPU and RAM to the MAX. After that, run Furmark xtreme burn and see how hot your card gets. Is it overclocked btw?

A few things that may help. I am not saying its your comps or STO. I dont have a turning off issue but STO does get my card hotter than any other game.

Get riva tuner and install it. Get the fan display up and make sure its configured to show GPU usage, Temps and Fan speed.

Try capping the game at 60 fps and 30 fps via the option in STO under troubleshooting and see if the Temps/GPU usage goes down.

If using ATI card then use either CCC or ATI tray tools to alter Catalyst A.I to Off/Low or High and check the temps again to see if there's any change. I found that Low works best on temps for me.

Dont forget that just because temps read normal or OK there could be something going on in your system where there's a weak point like a faulty component (This can be something as simple as a resistor or Capacitor) that only shows up when your PC is under stress.

STO is pretty intensive, Especially in FA's but I would also say that the engine is badly optimized from my observations.

Also I have found in my many years of building and fixing PCs that one of the most comment causes of system lock ups is heat and next the PSU. People tend to overlook there PSU and buy a cheaper model or they go for the PSU with 1000w output. The watt output means nothing, You should look for a PSU with as many Rails (Independent) as possible with the highest AMPS per rail as possible.

If you where to buy a PSU with 1000w output but with only 1 rail despite having several connection and with only 20amps on the rail(s) then forget running any of the latest games.

If you are capable with your PCs hardware, Make sure the GFX card is not on the same rail (Connection via splitter) as your HDs. When an HD fires up it drains tremendous power from the PSU and if on the same rail as the GFX it can cause a momentary power loss to the GFX card thus causing a lockup/shut down or reboot.

Something else I have noticed with STO is that the GPU usage can go up too 100% when servers are overloaded and when I play at more unsocial hours my GPU usage can be as low as 40% This is strange but could be cause by sloppy optimizations as the Engine is waiting for info from the servers.

What I also would do is run a proper Stress Test on your system for at-least a few hours (Not 10 mins) and do it when the comps been running for a while. Check your BIOS (If you feel comfortable with it) To check that nothing is overclocked or overvolted. Try underclocking your GFX card (Especially the Mem) and see if the problem is resolved.

Dont overlook your soundcard. Try setting in game to not use Digital output if using a card like the X-fi.

Download CPU-Z and see if the memory timings are set correct or if the CPU is overclocked.

If using a dual or quad core system try setting the affinity to 1,2,3 cores and see if it helps. (Do this via ALT Tab and get up task manager. Right click STO in Task manager and set affinity)

And don't forget that just cause 1 games runs ok doesn't mean another will. Theres a lot of factors.

I'm running into issues with STO and my system too.

My pc is by no means a bad@ss machine, but it's been running numerous 3d graphics games without issues, including SWG, WoW, EQ2, Borderlands, and many other games. *Without any issues at all*

I'm using an Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS, 1gb pci card.

I am running STO with the settings turned down to the "medium" sort of range, and a lot of frills turned off, graphically.
Still I get ground missions which cause me an immense drop in framerate, to the point that it's like a slide show in some situations, 1-2 fps or something.

Beyond that, even worse, I hear my graphics card making it's warning beeping noises as if it's overheating.
A couple of times I've had my system shut down completely, not crash, instant power down.

I simply can't believe this is a hardware issue on my side, because this is the first game I've encountered these issues with.

Can anyone confirm that this is some sort of issue with STO that is being looked into?

Your poor video card is far below the minimum system requirements.

Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 / ATI Radeon X1800

Its being pushed like its never been pushed before. Couple that with the fact that its fan is probably choked with dust unless you clean your system out occassionally and no wonder you're having issues.

Yeah, it is slightly sub-specs for STO's minimum requirements.
The fan's fanning and my system is clean inside, but I guess it's just running too hard.
    Time for an upgrade, hehe.

Well, I guess until I can put a new vid card in, I'll just have to turn the settings down some more and limp along. *sigh*

    Thanks.

Afraid I'll have to put my vote for "somethings wrong!". In past week STO has had an occasional habit of just shutting down the computer. It only happens when STO is running. Not going to give the whole system specs but I was having no problems until just recently. I must admit that this is making me feel weary. I hate the finger pointing that goes on in the forum (maybe its your drivers...etc.) when probably most of the documented complaintants have changed nothing on their computers, and were running the game fine before. Seems like its got to be something in a recent patch. With any luck the devs will have it figured out in this next major patch.

Win7 64bit here. Course unlike most of these people I run nvidia. 2 nvidia 9800GX2 in quad sli. xfx 780i with q9450 cpu and 8gig ocz reaper mem.

I attempted upgrading vid drivers and when I did that game ran like utter garbage. Reverted back and then it ran fast but keeps shutting off monitor and locking pc. doesn't turn off the tower but everything does lock up

I agree...I'm running a Toshiba Qosmio X305 with duo core 2gz, 4 gb ram, Ge force 9700M GTS vid ...all drivers and system drivers are NEW and up to date....and for the last 2 DAYS..it's just shut down...nope...it's not the machine or the system people...it's Cryptic, and their sloppy patches.... as this hadn't happened since the LAST patch!!! Sorry...I agree with WorryBird....it's Cryptic... (co-incedently..I can run WOW, COD and MOH all at once...on 3 monitors....quess what... Machine doesnt shut down) ;-) I think I'm done with STO until the Devs figure this one out...I dont need to fry my machine... I dont have another $1800 for another one... Sorry Cryptic., I'm gone until you fix STO....

btw...I have built and sold my own Pc's before....this isnt a power issue, cpu issue, driver issue, bios issue...etc...this started happening after the last patch came out..... check your code guys...I'll be back when you fix it...

I had this problem when I upgraded my video card from the onboard GeForce 7050 to a GeForce GT 240. I initially thought my power supply wasn't big enough. (450W) but it turns out the actual problem was the power supply fan was partially blocked by the hutch I had my PC in. I removed it from the hutch, set it in the open, and haven't had the problem since.
