Frankly, I think the only sound advice that one can give new players at this time is to stay away from PVP in STO.

Already exists (in AO), and has for 10 years.

Have to admit, it's good playing an MMORPG again.

I could switch games. However my loyalties lay with star trek. If there is a possibility to make a very good star trek game and have it an MMORPG I will continue to give my support and attention to the on going progress of this game to help in any way I can so that it will become a great game for Star Trek. I feel star trek deserves the best representation in the Game world it can.

We have come al ong way, and we will have to continue on the path of progress.

The problem with territory control in an MMO is that you can either 'force' people to be online for an actual battle at a specific time (as EVE does) to determine who controls a system, or you water it down and make the owner of a territory be determined by an aggregate of multiple smaller engagements, which can be difficult to make compelling and fun, but would be almost a given considering STO's inherently casual, themepark nature. I can't conceive of a fun, balanced way to organize STO's myriad fleets (and fleetless players) into fighting any sort of formal war, which means a lot of the excitement, tension and feeling of real consequences associated with territory control are just not feasible for STO.

    I must respectfully disagree.

This will not be for everyone, but for any person that has played pvp in STO. This would be a miracle update. I don't think there needs to be any more rewards for caputuring a territory other then just the right to fly your factions flag over it.

The victory in its self is more of a reward then any thing. I believe if any rewards are given out that at most. the people who were present for the turn over of a territory would receive a nice blue or purple item.

That would give people more then enough incentive to attack opposing factions territory.. Infact it may be too much of an incentive. lol

This would be no more real for consequences then that of capture and hold maps already.

but it would be nice if there were some percs for turning over a territory that would not effect other players that do not wish to participate.

They could make the rewards as simple as a large number of energy credits to the players who participated in the victory turn over of the said territory.

Why not take a page from part of WoW's playbook?

In some post Vanilla zones, There are certain objectives that can be met by either side (raising faction flags in 5 different towers, occupation of certain buildings changes their loyalty, etc) and if enough flags are raised or buildings are loyal to your faction you faction 'wins' that zone for the next hour or two, granting a small experience point buff, or damage dealing buff or healing buff or whatever for that time.

After the hour or two is up, the flags/buildings reset to neutral, and anyone can come in and try to capture them to start the process over.

So this isn't mandatory, wouldn't involve players who don't want to try to capture the objectives, would give a small incentive to players to participate and try to win the zone, and even benefit the players who didn't do any PvP (as the buff would be faction-wide in the zone). Those are 'real' consequences, but aren't game-breakingly overpowering or unbalancing.

They could set up 4-5 small objectives or instances in some of the more popular zones (Beta Ursae, Tau Dewa, Sirius, Qo'nos, etc) and more people would see the objectives, and be impacted by faction control of them, etc.

I like that. Maybe they could just reduce the prices of certain items for the faction like hypos and or shield batteries, or fleet items in fleet stores? This would promote fleets and give fleets a real thing to involve grouping and organizing its members .this would give the feeling of an economy change that is war related

I loved the pvp in pirates of the burning seas, "flipping" ports, port battles, realm vs realm pvp is one of the few types i really enjoy if it is done with any sense of balance.

game needs alot of work before we get there.

but adding new territories/sectors where you could cap and hold planet systems outside the current systems would allow pvers to do their thing and pvps to do their thing and add a whole lot more meaning to pvp than quing for a match that means jack squat to anything.

I know there are people who may not like sto. I would rather say I do like it despite some of its faults. I choose to support it in hopes for a better game. It may be due to the simple fact it is Star Trek. I dont think that is it . I love the p v p in this game and I think that if your having problems with it you may need work on your build which is sometimes a ongoing process.
