What was the Sisko doing in "Sacrifice of Angels"?
Sometimes they fought, sometimes they didn't. It was mostly about the adventure. STO is a dungeon game, queue for the pug, no-loss insta-respawn pew-pew. Totally different.
I'm not even saying this kind of gameplay is bad, or that I dont enjoy it, just saying that it isnt Trek at all, its something else with Trek artwork. I can deal with that.
In the final analysis, I think your main issue is that watching something is very different from doing it. Fighting in something like the Dominion War would be tedious and suck horribly..... much like a semi-failed STF.
I would actually enjoy some 24x7 battlefield stuff. Starbase 24 would be good, just show up and join the fight, maybe some klinks show up on the other side and we meet in the middle. That would be very much better than the model we have now, where Starbase 24 is basically a dungeon that you queue for and then go make a sandwich after its over. Trek deserves a long-play immersive game. This aint it. Oh well.
Well visually I would say that the following things detract from the Trek feel.
Starfleet and Klingon ships with funky strange skins and glowy bits, Jem Hadar set, and other set visuals don't look Trek at all...Starfleet ships were always extremely standardized and uniform.
Engine Trails
Small planets
Oversized interiors and terrible standard uniforms for Stafleet NPCs
A lack of iconic hand phasers, no Search for Spock Klingon Disruptors ,
Awful looking Mass Effect esque body armors which everyone seems to be wearing.
Cryptic ship designs that don't make sense, don't follow the design aesthetics that Trek has been known for and look as if they belong in another universe.
glowy 3d bits on weapons
Lockbox ships of course
Star Trek Legacy, a very mediocre game felt more Star Trek than this game
Poor music, almost no music from any Star Trek films or tv shows is in the game.
Several of my characters have "iconic" hand phasers; my Rommie on Tribble has a standard TNG hand phaser, and my Fed Admiral on Holodeck carries a 23rd-century-style Type II hand phaser, among others.
None of my toons have any "Mass Effect esque" body armor. (Did you know it's very, very easy to turn off the visual effects of the body armors, kits, and weapons?)
Most of the rest has to do with the fact that this is an MMO, and of course the fact that things might have changed quite a bit over the 30 years since the shows ended, and the almost 200 years since Jim Kirk was galloping around the galaxy...

I've done a 4-hour Romulan Temple.... it wasn't fun.
would be awesome if there was a star trek game that was closer to the star trek lore/canon but I don't think it would rit well into the free to play model.
think some forget the thing called the Trade and barter system I don't see it thinking out of the box for Voyager to trade things for photon torpedo's or stuff to make them and would you want to see Voyager trading every EP for some photon torpedo's or stuff to make them time did not stop when it was not on tv time did pass we just did not see it
I thought the same "This doesnt feel like trek" so i walked up and squeezed the backside of a pretty woman in a starfleet uniform...she slapped me....but idk it felt pretty trek to me
again there are things that have to be laxed because this is an MMO...people who play MMO's like to have a variety with their characters...few people would play this game if everyone wore the same thing as everyone else. Even in the series though not everyone wore the same thing...Kirk wore a shirt different from everyone else, so did McCoy, Troi and Dr. Crusher wore different uniforms than their crews, the DS9 crew didnt wear the same uniform as TNG crew and the Voyager crew was different than the DS9 uniforms.
I do remember a star fleet officer commanding a BOP.
Sisko piloted a bajorian space ship
Riker was once named the first offcier of a BOP
To some degree I would accept some variation in uniform but it gets pretty extreme. You would not have to be all the same species or exactly identical but you should have a bit more of a standardized outfit (IF you want to maintain that you are in-fact Starfleet rank and file).
What officer was that? Kirk when he stole it? The Bajorians joined the Federation so that is acceptable. Besides... Sisko was... Well let's not even get into that.
Riker was on that BoP in an Exchange program. He was not really the Captain of the ship and did not fly around in it on any regular basis. Whenever you see "Federation Fleets" what do you see? A sea of White ships with saucers. They were always standard Federation ships not Jem'hadar, Tholian, Cardassian, Ferengi, Breen, and Ships from the Future. You can try to argue it but you know as well as I do that it does not make ANY sense for a Starfleet rank and file to be flying these vessels.
So that leaves us with one of two realistic choices... Do not let them fly those (which is pretty much impossible now) OR say they are freelancers who do not bend knee to Starfleet and can do whatever they please which makes the most sense.
To warmaker001b: Romulan D'deridex often used single cannons.
Just as an overall note: I do not want to seem completely down on STO. I am thrilled at the sheer amount of true and worthwhile Fanservice you can find in the game from TOS to Voyager references. However, there are just some things that are irksome in how blatantly they disregard Canon.

And how do you know that they're Starfleet without metagaming?
Ships are nothing more than cheap comodities, you recieve ships like you get a car. this is wrong, in starfleet/kdf they assign ships to you. I know this cant be fixed, but it can feel better if they go through a little animation instead of a "you just bought this ship" popup. something that shows the ship being given to you by an admiral then pans out to the shipyards where the ship launches and done.
awwwwww....you want a littel animation. That's cute
Grinding for MkIV epic gear?
Ain't Nobody Got Time for That
Sadly over the years the veil of Star Trek kept getting slimmer and slimmer until it vanished.
This isnt a complaint thread about no exploration, that is only a small lacking subject.
the following drains this game of trek.
Lockbox ships without description as to how they were allowed to be flown by their respective factions.

ADMIRALS!!!!! we have admirals, this is WAY wrong. we should only have captains with varying degrees, no admirals that is a canon failures. (as for that future Boff ship team thingy, just call it the fleet captains initiative and have it as a special path for people to choose in skills)
multiple beams these have to be fixed, I don't mind some extra beams firing in either a 1-3 ratio on random sequences, but seriously I've only seen a multi beam shot once in DS9 that's it.
unlimited torpedos,....self explanitory.
I know this is a holodeck simulation but that is a weaksauce excuse, I would much wrather have captains as top level, and have commander as the captain-ra slot-up.
to the Op....i hate to say this, but this is not a TV show or a book...it's a game....not an role playing experience for you....it's the truth, but yeah...i wish it was better for RP...go watch some old TOS if you want to RP...tis true...but sigh
"If everyone used Macs, we'd be working on how to get to Alpha Centauri rather than how to get to Mars."
Roleplaying is pretending. And that's exactly what you have going for you. All you need is a piece of paper and a pencil and you pretend you are fighting dragons and all that.
If you are into rp you just pretend things are different in oppose to the rest of us with no imagination who needs the actual gameplay improved.
Anyway, it might sound crazy but the main thing that makes it feel like not star trek to me, is not being able to pilot from the bridge.
It's just a fundamental part of star trek sitting in the captain's chair and calling out plays.

The exploration complaint part is what I do not get. Why do peeps complain about NOT enuff exploration. There are collecting mishes with fighting, collections mishes without fighting, collection mishes with talking to peeps, herding space animal missions and even a mission that gets you a pretty cool ship just to name off a few. What kinda of exploring does the OP want, just curious?
yeaaaa...the torpedo thingy is a sticking point but...Voyager just replicated more and there is allways extra AM laying around...I guess.
The driving from your bridge would be fine for sector space but, fighting would a pain.
So yep, there are issues, but overall I am happy with how the game is going.

Amazingly I can live without that particular part but I do understand why you say that. It is so much part of what we see all the time that it would have been fun as an option to do it that way.
Honestly though I can understand why the Devs find that particular wish so hard to fulfill and have to give them a pass on it because it would practically require two engines for one game if we still had the away team the way it is now.
And how do you know that they're Starfleet without metagaming?
The only reason you are to believe they are Starfleet at present is because you deal directly WITH the Starfleet admiralty, get Starfleet Ranks, and go on missions where you are addressed as a member of Starfleet. What I am saying is why not just drop that little charade, keep the missions, but alter the dialogue and make it obvious you are working "With" not "For" Starfleet.

I am not the OP obviously but for me it would be nice to have a bit more Problem Solving, finding unusual Alien ruins and investigating them, outright puzzles, and tense diplomatic situations. (For the Feds anyway... Klingons SHOULD be out there killing everything in sight, that IS what they do best after all).
There are a few instances of some of this stuff. There are not that many true puzzles but there is that Diplomatic standoff above Bajor which I actually love due to how it works and how you have to resolve it. I also absolutely love the Fek'hiri missions for the KDF which IMO are the best missions in the entire game.
I thought actually getting the Iconian gate WORKING and figuring out who the Aliens were on New Romulus would have been a great addition to this sort of thing. It could have been a real puzzle you had to piece together and work hard to get correct and afterwards you could collect a nice reward but instead it is just more killing things. Mind you I like the cut-scenes for that mission but still...
I like the FE's for the most part and it is a bit sad that they are so infrequent now... Those really added a lot to the game. Cloaked Intentions is actually one of my Favorite of the whole lot. A Borg FE would have been epic.
eh, its like any mmo. Star Wars? How many hundreds or thousands of jedi master/sith lord ubertypes are there? WoW? How many supermaxed chars running 'ultrarare artifacts'?
If this was 'true to the setting', guess what, the game would have to restrict thousands of people because of limited "Admiral' slots.
Alternately, they tweak it so we're all Captains, forever. Just Captain grade 43, or something.
Normally, I can't stand Voyager; but that was hillarious.
