Great guide, thank you. Except, when I click on the links to see a build at STO Academy, all I get is this:

    Hello Mr. Hilbert@Mancom

Do you have any plans to update the Hilbert Guide, for the new season 8 Legacy of Romulus expansion pack that is scheduled to be implemented on 5/21/13?

I have been using your guide for about a year now, I have found it to be one of the easiest to understand and by far the most user friendly and helpful guides out there.

As stated in the OP of the Guide this is only a recommended and or suggested basic cookie cutter approach to PvP/PvE/STF builds. So I tried it and modified my play style to best utilize the great information that the guide currently offers. It is absolutely the most valuable STO assist websites I have found, Thank you good Sir.

I have used The Hilbert's Guide as a basic concept template, making some custom modification for each faction/class/role as needed and when applicable for all 10 of my characters from both factions FED and KDF.

May I ask if you would look over my personal ship substitutions list below; and if possible for a reply with your recommendations and or suggestions for substitution ship types.

Below is a listing of how I applied the Hilbert's Guide information for PvP/PvE/STF
    for both FED and KDF.

    FED:

    http://hilbertguide.com/#Escort

1 lvl50VA Tac, Patrol Escort (PvP) (Primary-Spike DPS) Ship type: Patrol Escort (formerly called Fleet Escort)

P.S. If you were in STO back in Season 1 and at lvl40RA selected the Fleet Escort (Like I did) aka name changed to the Patrol Escort, you can substitute either the Mirror Advanced or Patrol Escort as needed, just make sure you pay close attrition to the ship type description, the Mirror Universe Ships, are opposites in outer appearance. so make sure you apply the proper ship type for the applicable build type PvP and or PvE.

I have seen them posted on the Exchange between 25-50k ec's.
    OR
Hook up with a Fleet that has the tier 5 shipyard/store, you'll need to have enough, Fleet Ship Modguals, Dilithium and Energy Credits readly available to meet the sellers asking price/amount of the (Host) T5 Fleet.
    OR
If you do not have access to a Fleet with tier5 shipyard/store; as a last resort you can always go to the Cryptic/PWE C-Store and buy either the ship you want/need or ZEN and go to the in-game ESD Shipyard Ship NPC. either way, make sure you select and apply the best suited ship type for the applicable build and game play application PvP and or PvE, the wrong build and or ship type in the wrong content will result in less than desired results.

1 lvl50VA Tac, Advanced Escort or Mirror Advanced Escort (PvE/STF) (Spike DPS)
    & (Secondary Team Support)

    http://hilbertguide.com/#PvEscort
Attention: This escort build is not suited for PVP matches. It is specifically designed to deal with NPCs.

1 lvl50VA Tac, Ody Tac Cruiser (PvE/STF) (Sustained DPS/Secondary Team Support)

1 lvl50VA Eng, Ody Ope Cruiser (PvE/STF) (Team Tank/Damage Sponge/Primary Buffs, Hull Heals, Shield Repairs)?Eng/Cruiser as main healer
    http://www.hilbertguide.com/blog/#2012-11-18

Sci Captains: Used The Hilbert's Guide basic concepts with some custom modification for Science class/role as needed and when applicable.

((EXCEPTION BASED ON TEAM ROLE NEEDS: ))
1 lvl40RA/50VA Sci Captain, Deep Space Science Vessel, (PvE/STF)

when filling the role of the ((Primary Sci)), for ((Crowd Control/Zone Denial)) & (Secondary Support, Buffs, Hull Heals, Shield Repairs)

    OR

lvl50VA Sci Captain, Ody Sci Cruiser (PvE/STF)
when filling the role of the ((Primary Sci)), ((Team Support, Buffs, Hull Heals, Shield Repairs)) & (Secondary Crowd Control/Zone Denial)
    Sci-Cruiser as main healer
    http://www.hilbertguide.com/blog/#2012-11-18

SPECIAL NOTE: ((KDF Faction, Will need to make some custom modification for each type of Captain/Ship, class/role as needed and or when applicable.)) refer to the FED section listed above and make KDF Captain skills/ ship class type and role modifications as needed.

P.S. Just use common sense when choosing what captain class, ship type and role type that is most applicable for KDF captain skills, class and ship type as well as what role you plan to be filling in on your team as needed and most important try not to over complicate it just adapt the listed guide, blog and post information that is best suited and most applicable to your play style and needs.

For a listing of All STO, FED, KDF & ROM Characters Ship Class Types I
    Refer to: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Playable_starship

    KDF:
    1 lvl50LG Tac, B'rel Bird-of-Prey Retrofit (PvP) (Primary-Spike DPS)

It is my intention to update the THG with S8 to include the new trait system (currently I don't give trait advice since it's not possible to change traits without starting a new character) and possibly also include a second set of gear suggestions for players with access to fleet/reputation gear outside of the old sets.

Hi, Hilbert. This is very good news. Your guide has been one of my daily play companions for almost a year now. :)

Now on to a little problem I'm having:
The command is called "GenSendMessage HUD_Root FirePhasers" and this simply means that it fires all energy weapons.

Today I created a new reman character and, as with all my toons, I loaded spacebar.txt while on the first space map I was sent to, but for some reason the above mentioned command is not firing torpedoes, only beam weapons. I've tried reloading the bind file several times with the same result.

Weird thing is it still works as intended in all my pre-LOR toons, although I haven't reloaded the bind file in any of them and don't plan to, just in case.

Any ideas? Has anyone else encountered this same problem?

    Cheers.

If you want to fire both energy weapons and projectiles (torpedoes+mines) with your spacebar, you should use
    GenSendMessage HUD_Root FireAll
    instead.

Still, how come FirePhasers fires both cannons and torpedoes with my other toons?

Have you set your weapons to autofire? If yes, then FirePhasers fires only your energy weapons during the initial button press and then during the autofire activations the game fires all weapons that are on autofire, inlcuding any torpedoes you may have set to autofire.

I don't want to criticize the guide, and I'm confident it helped alot of new players out for their first build. But I think the guide needs a little bit more then just usual 4x DHC 2x EptS builds these days though.

I mean the game both pugging and teamplay has taken a heavy spin (Significant changes) and there are tons more builds that can be made these days which could be classified as 'universal' or 'standard issue'. Spike builds are more viable then ever (Yeah yeah its a pain to do sometimes) but just sayin there are alot more 'standards' now then the standard bug/fleet escort build.

I just think people need to start properly both oldies and new guys, and having some variety in builds isnt so bad at all for their own curiosity and testing, you have to get off somewhere and you cant stick with the same guide build forever.

I think the next guide should get people to actually think about it rather then just copy/paste it.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Cheers :)

Eagerly awaiting a refresher on the guide, with some of the reputation additions to grow into .. i know there are some PvP NoNo's in the rep system for example ...

That said ... the guide was meant as a 3 ship build ... PvP escort, PvP cruiser & PvE escort ..
As a starting point for ppl to participate in the PvP game, and not get blown up 15x in 2minutes flat .... (now they can actually fly into the firefight for a few seconds against an organised team).....

Use & learn ... there is no 1 way ....

As for his PvEscort ... that is still a very good thing to make & fairly easy to obtain for alot of people, instantly making their game alot more quick/survivable/enjoyable for a few hours work in getting said items, even if it can use abit of an update on the items themselves .....
Maco & Borg gear are quite hard on the resources to obtain currently with the reputation system for example ....

Plz update the guide to make it even more awesome than it currently is ... i am fairly sure that the current hit-statistics for the website will display it gets visited quite alot for a page not changed since 2012-11

Plz turn these few cents into some serious bucks ....

I think the point was to make basically one build that people could go to as a baseline. No options to weigh, no figuring out how you're going to specialize, just "Do this and you won't suck". It also needed to be cheap and not rely on expensive Doffs or rep gear. In that capacity, I think it's fine the way it is. I still link people to it who are totally new and lost, or even long time players who never looked into making a high quality/PvP-capable build before. Once they master that baseline build, then they can start thinking about customizing and specializing for whatever the environment of the current meta is.

Oh definately for sure mate. I just try and promote people to actually think why you use a specific option in a specific build, if people learn why they use the options/combos they use, and understand the mechanics, it will eventually lead these people in creating other successful builds.

Can see where it may need to be updated some for things since S7, though - no? There was a recent post somewhere from somebody that said they followed the Escort build and were having various issues - given the changes to STO since S7, one might see where folks could have issues.

    What kind of issues?

Other than the difficulty of obtaining Borg/MACO on a new character (which is a problem that I adressed in the 'Gear' section by recommending Breen+Paratrinic) I don't really see a problem with the build.

Of course, the metagame has moved to spike builds, but is there any idiot-proof spike build? The reason why I went with 4 DHC instead of 3+Torp back when I first wrote the guide was that 4 DHCs is much easier to fly, and I think this still holds true.

Some cautionary words regarding the pvp dps-usefulness of the cruiser might be in order, but I think it's still a good cruiser build.

The primary improvements for the builds that I can think of are dual EPtX builds with doffs - but that requires not-so-cheap doffs, and therefore I probably won't do it.

A different problem is something like leech. I guess it's a really powerful console, but it is comparatively difficult to obtain for new players, and the supplies are limited. That's also the reason why I never recommended particular exchange/drop-only gear.

But maybe I should include a "Should I play PVP in STO?" section and state my opinon of the current game!?

Perhaps if we stopped assuming all newcomers to PvP are idiots, things would naturally go better for em? :D

Ok, idiotproof spike builds, since having a cloak its not that much different then rotating EptX abilities under your WASD/Spacebar keys. Stack 2 Beam overloads, decloak and autofire, just press spacebar and whoop there ya go. Might need a timed TB but even that isnt too hard.

There is alot more too it and there is alot more variation then the standard every 1.30m (Alpha timer) build, which has too much shortcomings even if you can make it succeed 95>% of the time.

How is plasmonic so hard to get? Cap of a F2p is 10m, i thought a plasmonic console pack was somewhere around a mil. back in the early days i obtained like 5M ec on each toon just by leveling and selling low level **** gear. Grind up a romulan and have a big chance to get a boff which is around 10M worth or more.

I dont get all this nonsense about not being able to obtain stuff, granted the Rep grind pretty much kills half of the potential players and stop before they ever really gave PvP a chance, but cmon.

Seriously, you base your writings and guides on your personal beliefs and opinions on this game, and Imo its not realistic anymore. There is no more old skool 'pressure dmg' cruiser teams as you would like, it makes no sense with 2/3 cloakers in a team or perhaps more. The old days are over.

As sad as it is true, and I like it as much as you do, this game is now all about grind, grind grind grind, massive timeinvestement to obtain your passives which help you significantly in PvP, Acc x3 weaps are still as expensive as ever and require you to increase your EC cap before you can even obtain them.

Fleet weaps are also very good, requires tons of time investement for fleet credits and dilithium, or Zen, whichever you prefer, This game is the highlight of all MMO's when it comes to Grind2win and Pay2win now.

Either accept it or its probably for the best to move on. Sounds harsh, but its the reality. And yes Hilbert, I really would wish this game was back into Season 3~ but it simply isnt. Its only going to get worse.

Imagine in 1/2 years we have 10 reputation systems to do, how would that effect newcomers? I bet the amount of people attempting to PvP and probably stop after a few weeks because they realize its futile is probably 99% then.

Something i noticed in boot camp is that many sto players turn to pvp after they ran out of pve content, by that i mean after many rounds of ise, not when whey finished leveling. So the sweet spot of not to taxing financially for new players vs. helping players avoid making bad investments is thin. Not so much a question of intelligence.

I think that the grind economy could make for a nice additions to the guide. People will slot doffs (hopefully) and just as maco or dis-plasma hybrids are recommended and require pve grind. Good pvp doff can be had through simply playing the game as well. MAybe not SNB or Rommie BO doff, but SDR, DMG control Technician...

eg. Dmg Control Doffs for rotating two different etpx abilities can be had simply by doffing from the lt st'TRIBBLE's shop, or from the replicator.

I don't think that advanced fleet shields are very expensive, and make for an even better shield then Paratrinic (which also requires PvE). ... There are more examples.

Traits and Romulans woud make for great additions.

@hilbert: If you are interested pm me in game @havam. I have finished draft for a gear/grind/econ guide with an eye to beginning players for boot camp. I didn't have the time to finish it, cause of other deadlines. But maybe some basics about eg. doffing and starbase gear and how to obtain it quickly would be of interest to you for inclusion in the guide.

We do get dil and FM for pvp, so in my opinion, much of the starbase gear is actually easier to grind for then other rep items and that just by pewing so why not use it.

@MT: in 3 years i haven't figured a fun way to get EC. 99% of my shinnies are gifts. Ever since there is the starbase and rep gear, i m happy when i have 5 mio ec on my account :)

Does the majority of new (PVP) players have a sufficiently advanced fleet? The current idea behind gear (and boff) recommendations is that everything is essentially solo-able in a moderate amount of time (and in the case of Borg/MACO gear, it's a good idea to get these rep systems up to at least T4 anyway).

I still haven't found time to update the guide, but it is my intention to provide something like a gear progression recommendation for the builds, something like "Paratrinic -> MACO -> Elite Fleet" or "PlaDis -> Fleet Advanced/Elite" or "nothing -> Leech". This could be a way to give a wider array of options without getting into a "you have to weigh the pros and cons" that I want to avoid.

Is there a way to get three blue or two purple damage control doffs from reliable singleplayer sources? I know one can get one blue and one purple from the replicator by levelling up the doff system. If there was a way to do this, I could consider suggesting 100%-uptime multi EPtX-builds as a "progression" for the boff seating.

(Space) Traits is something that I intend to do, Romulans is doubtful for the time being since I don't have a Romulan myself.

Also keep in mind: It is not the THG's intention to provide explanations why something works, it only gives simple "do this and you will perform okay" advice.
