I'm hoping we can get a clarification on the STF armor issue. I understand the decision to have Romulans obtain the STF gear of their ally, stat-wise, but do they at least have their own skin, or will there literally be Romulans running around in furry Klingon shoulderpads/MACO spacesuits?

Thank you, you have finally confirmed what I have been saying all along, the Romulan Republic is not a true faction, but a sub-faction of the Federation and KDF.

If it was a true faction then Romulans would not be split by an invisible line that divides the other 2 "factions".

exactly. it's not a 3rd faction at all. which is a real shame. being allied with either fed or kdf which I hope changes at a later date. for me it's the most disappointing thing about the whole expansion. when people expect to play as a romulan they should expect to play for team GREEN! not the red or the blue team. the fact rom kdf and rom feds can't team any more pretty much means the republic is splintered and fractured just as much as the rse is. which effectively just makes the romulan situation far worse :(

If we cannot access the Tier 5 ships from our allies' shipyard, why bother with having the players choose an ally? According to one of the previous posts, the original reason you are forced to make an alliance is for endgame content. As a result of this one particular change, the main reason for the alliance is now irrelevant.

Can someone explain why this has changed?

Clearly you don't read the forums. Many people (claiming to represent many more who probably didn't care) may posts about how they hated the idea of Romulans flying KDF/Starfleet ships.

They left the possibility for T1-4, but T5 is all romulan now.

I actually like the idea of romulans in romulan end games ships.

This gives Fed and KDF characters a reason to exist, as since if Romulans could get fed-kdf end game ships, there would be no reason to play a normal fed or kdf character.

Especially since the romulan space trait is every tactical's dream.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

Those of us with access to Romulans on Tribble can probably provide you with pics to go with it. ;) (While Romulans are much more common, you do have the chance to pick up a few Reman officers... including one that's always female at this point...)

There is one in a romulan mission currently on tribble, I'm sure someone has screenshotted her.

I am happy to get my question answered, and that was the answer I was expecting based on how I understand the faction system works. It is unfortunate though.

Other than sharing the fleet advancement system, the Romulans are there own full faction. Yes the alliance prevents Romulans of differing alliances from teaming, but that doesn't make them not a full faction otherwise. A necessary evil. If we ever get a Romulan starbase that may change, but it has also been stated by devs that the main reason for not having 3 completely separate factions is to prevent 1vs1vs1 PvP. They just want red team and blue team.

A full faction that can't team with other members of the same "faction" unless the Federation and KDF allows it? That makes the Romulans nothing more then a sub-faction of the other 2.

Cryptic can give them all the fancy bells and whistles it wants, at the end of the day they are still dividing them up between the Federation and KDF.

As for the 1v1v1 PVP explanation, if Cryptic only wanted 2 teams they could make the queues cross-faction for all 3 "factions" and just slot players into Team A and Team B at random as they queue.

What they have done is take the quicker and easier route of shoe-horning the Romulans into the existing 2 factions, thus reducing their workload (no separate Romulan Starbases, STF sets, Fleet Actions etc.)

Q: (kirimuffin) Will Romulans have access to their allies' C-Store ships and consoles? When a Romulan character opens a console reward pack from a lockbox, what (if anything) will she get?

STO Team: As revealed in a recent blog, there has been a change in which allied ships members of the Romulan Republic can command. Romulans will have access to Tier 4 and lower C-Store ships and consoles from those ships, but will not be able to command Tier 5 (Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Brigadier General, or Lieutenant General) ships.

As for Lock Box ships, Romulans will get access their allied version of the lock box ships and console reward packs ? it's important to note that they are not able to open lock boxes until they choose an ally, though. At launch, Romulan players will not have access to a time ship variant, and thus will not be able to open those reward packs (they can still open Temporal Lock Boxes, though). We do plan to create a unique variant for them to be released at a future date. Full details about this topic can be found in this Dev Blog.

From the bolded part above, the answer states that Romulans will be able to get allied ships in a lock box. However, LoR blog #9 states that Romulans will only have access to the ships that are available to either faction: Cardassian Galor, Ferengi D'Kora, Tholian Orb Weaver, and the Jem'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier.

The Ally versions of ships in question happen to be the Mirror Escorts, Mirror Cruisers and Mirror Science Vessels for the Federation; Mirror Vo'quv, Mirror Vor'cha and Mirror Qin. Clarification of this would be appreciated, Devs.

I don't see why its technically infeasible for Fed Roms and KDF Roms to team for Rom missions. There's already error messages "That player does not meet requirements" if you invite a Cross Faction player to something faction specific. Since Roms are flagged with a Rom Faction ticker, why can't Rom missions check for this flag? Or are Roms actually inheretting Fed or KDF faction flags as their main faction flag behind the scenes?

Technically, the Cardassian Galor, Ferengi D'Kora, Tholian Orb Weaver, Etc., each have 2 versions -- one for KDF and one for Fed. They just look the same, so you can't tell the difference, but the game can and gives you the correct one based on your faction when the reward pack is opened.

The mirror ships you mentioned can not be flown by Romulans.

I'll update the post so it's a little more clear.

I think Cryptic is trying to do too much with custom bridges and not seeing an easier possibility. Champions Online allows you to choose from a selection of templates for your hideout, and then you modify that template however you choose. Surely a similar system would be doable for STO, where you choose a preset bridge layout, and then you can do things like modify the colors, textures, boff positions, and so on. At the very least, it could work as a stop-gap measure to give captains more customization over their bridges before they can implement their Foundry-based plans.

I didn't say it made sense nor that I was in favor of it, but besides the shared fleet system, the Romulans have enough content to stand as it's own faction. By saying it's not a full faction implies that it doesn't have enough content to be considered one which is misleading. As far as the pvp, you're right, other than the queues. Their reasoning for the PvP thing may actually have been a response to why there won't be a 1vs1vs1 instead of a reason for the alliance.

As far as the decision being quicker and easier and lightening the workload, it's very possible they wouldn't have had the time to make Romulans their own Starbase, etc, also it may have been a matter of seeing how popular the Romulan faciton ended up being before putting more time and money into it. There's talk of having a Romulan starbase one day, so this may change and Romulans may be 100% faction instead of 90%. I don't see this being a huge problem in comparison to what they've done right with this expansion. So I recommend choosing your battles more carefully.

I just remembered also, devs stating that having 3 completely separate factions is bad for business, that likely being the main reason. Though as I said, the success of the Romulan faction could very well change their minds.

    Hi

I The original post, there was a question about the posibility of new game translations.
In previous Ask Cryptic you mention de possibility of new translations for the game, and one of them was a Spanish translation. Can you give us any news on that? Is Spanish a possibility (even a remote one)?

    Can you say something ?

    Thanks

Q: (psiamesse) How high on the whiteboard is the Exploration revamp for STO?

STO Team: With the success of the Foundry, in many ways player authored missions has become the Exploration content within Star Trek Online. Now that Foundry missions offer valuable rewards, they are much higher quality episodes than the Genesis maps that were shipped at launch. Sometime in the next two years, we would like to leverage the popularity of the Foundry as a legitimate way to explore the galaxy.

    The Foundry.

Sometime in the next two years.

    That is disappointing.

Agreed. I like the idea of the Foundry being used, but that timeframe is a bit ... remote for my taste. :(

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Re-read the post... Time ships are the only ships that have faction-specific models as far as lobi/box ships go. They won't be available at launch, but Cryptic says they will be soon after.

My question is this - if Rom characters won't have access to Tier 5 ships from their allies, then will they get their own Heavy Destroyers like the Chimera and Peghqu' for veteran rewards?

They said in one of the Dev Blogs that the 1000 day ship is coming but not at launch. Hopefully they also use that opportunity to get Fleet versions of all three in as well (hint, hint).

That sort of threw me as well. Do they mean to say that in order for Foundry to be viable toward legit (for lack of a better word) Exploration Missions for player's, that Foundry itself needs as much as two more years of development? Or do they mean something else?

Very disapointed that the Romulans wont have their own STF based armor, like the feds and kdf do. Is this something thast going to be looked down the road or planned or what?

Seems kinda silly for the Romulans not to have their own ground set.

I was looking forward to having Romulan STF armor, yet one more mark against supporting this expansion for me. I still have to think about buying the legacy pack. I don't get why Romulans wont have their own armor if we surpose to be our own faction.

So there's a good question, can we expect maybe to see mirror Romulan ships in the future? And what would happen if a Romulan character opens a lock box and whatever algorithm that determines what you get pops out that you should get a mirror ship?

Romulans have their own base and hub, they really don't have to go to ESD if they don't want too....the only thing they don't have is the Academy.... I don't see a problem with them showing up at ESD or the FC, Earth Space is already filled with non Starfleet ships, at least these Romulan ships will be piloted by Romulans and not Dominion ships piloted by humans.
