Gene never declared anything canon after 1991 when he left TNG.
And even CBS doesn't consider STO canon. It's an alternate reality setting.
And anyone who thinks Star Trek canon includes constantly flying alien enemy faction ships, having bridge crews full of alien enemies (Jem'Hadar, Breen, Gorn, and Reman), and killing everything in sight probably hasn't seen much Star Trek.
Well pretty much decreed that TOS Season 3 is not canon, TAS is not canon, the Meyer's films not canon, Star Trek V not canon, and parts of TUC is not canon. He was worse than Babylon 5's JMS in declaring things not canon.
Personally, I could care less and if anyone wants to stay STO is not canon, XI is not canon, and whatever, so be it, its their opinion. I feel everything is canon in my book, some of it is an AU, and some needs to be explained a little.
Gene freely violated canon left and right whenever he felt it desirable (not necessary, just desirable) for a good story. I don't think it's either fair or productive to treat any arbitrarily-chosen set of episodes as holy writ.
Like or dislike JJ's movies on their own merits, sure; but canon doesn't enter into it.

Gene Roddenberry was no saint and the reverence being afforded him now by people who quote him as if quoting divine scripture is, at the very least, hilarious.
We can thank him for bringing us Star Trek but to be honest, if he had stayed in control of it, it would never have made it as far as it did.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
No way, although it would probably work for today's generation as it's just pew pew pew compared to the prime universe's story driven shows. Good luck to them if they ever do it, but I'm not going to be watching.
I get all the Star Trek pew pew pew I need right here on STO!
I would absolutely not watch any JJ Trek reboot of TNG, or likely a any other JJ-influenced Trek series down the road. While TNG wasn't without its faults, I consdier NuTrek to be horrible. It's absolutely not anything I want to see attatched to the name 'Star Trek'. Right now it's somewhat easier to ignore because its a movie seires and not a TV series, but if it came to television, I would not be a happy camper.
What we need is either a continuation of the TNG era (ignoring the horrible Voyager ending and the Nemesis movie) or a series set between Undiscovered Country and TNG, when they had those spiffy red uniforms.
The former is a comfortable era for a lot of trek fans, I feel-and probably the most beloved era. I think there is good reason for Trek to be brought back as something familiar (with higher production values) to bring back the old fans, because lets face it, a lot of the TNG movies and later Trek content such as Voyager and Enterprise, really hurt the franchise. Trek has to go back to its roots, and while I realize that TNG isn't necessarily Trek's 'roots' in the simplest definition of the word, with three series to draw from, it is the most established 'era' of trek by far.
The latter was an era that never got a series of its own, spanning a not inconsiderable amount of time in the Trek timeline. It's an untapped goldmine, effectively. It also has the benefit of drawing from an era of trek that spawned some of the best Trek movies out there (wheras the TNG era movies are generally derided, with the exception of First Contact). TOS-movie era had a certain aesthetic and charm that hasn't been seen since, and in many ways, it's a bit more 'sensible' imagine-no awful holodeck plots! None of that silly stuff like children on board warships etc. If Trek wants to go into a more mature direction, this era would be the logical one to utilize.
Maybe... but only if he create completely new crew, ship, universe. Hell no for "remaking" existing characters only because he has different vision of them. You have different idea of character? Create new which suits you. In my opinion Star Trek trade mark, and characters from TOS were added to the last movie only to attract to cinemas old fans.

If you think that, then you really don't know what you are talking about, since the whole movie has more nods to the Trek franchise itself then any of the other ones. George Samuel Kirk and Winona Kirk were only characters in a few novels or the fact that McCoy's equip about his divorce was a nod to an earlier Trek script.
Since the new movie restarted and reenergized the franchise, I say to you haters, you really need to look at the old movies. The majority of them are the pew pew variety, in fact, none of them really stay with the origins of going no where no one has gone before and with very little exploring what so ever. TMP comes close. Right now, the Prime Universe has so much back story that only established Trek fans will go to see the movie. Look at the last few movies like INS and NEM, while I wouldnt say ENT died because of few viewers, it died due to the UPN folding.
You really need to look at the all the series, Trek goes all over the place with story-driven episodes to all-action ones to comedic ones to ones that literally makes no sense. This new Trek was bound to happen and it brought in whole new audiences and a whole new generation of Trek fans. If my cheerleading-I-am-all-about-the-popularity daughter went to see the movie, there is hope for our beloved franchise.

I don't say that it didn't do that. But JJ did have to recreate already existing characters and history to do that. He could simple create totally new ship, captain and crew and movie won't lose anything by this.
I absolutely would watch a new show based on JJTrek.
However, I don't have regular TV any more, I just watch by streaming and I think networks are STILL not taking that audience into account... so it would probably look like it has low ratings and get cancelled.
Let's just say the new movie pulls huge numbers, and I think it can. Then a 3rd film in made, and JJ feels it's time to bring it back to TV.
But here's the catch 22, It MUST be set in his new timeline, AND..............
He wants to reboot TNG with this new show. We are talking about new actors, new look ship, and a lot of new twist to a few prime stories, and a ton of new story lines to go down.
Would you support a New show set in JJ's world, or be hardcore, and protest it by not watching one clip?
I have a feeling this might be the road they want to go down, but it will be based on what these next movies do at the box office. New younger fans, and hopfully more money in the bank.
So how do you feel about this idea?
I would.. I hope that happens. Star Trek.. the old trek as much as I love it.. needs updating. We as audience want action, intrigue, intelligence..all mixed up in a tidy little bow. The old trek feels old.. If they would create a new series it would have to be in the new era.

Since we were on a drought of Trek for the first time in 20 years with NEM flopping and ENT being cancelled, I would say it reenergized the franchise, and I think STO had a hand in it too.

I'm not even going to go see the new movie when it's released. Abrams Trek is just not enjoyable to me.

That's my 2 cents.
Most of the ships , uniforms etc are canon (except the sad "modern" ones)
