What Stahl said and whats in that podcast sounds rather different.
One is talking about power for combat and what types of power a ship bringts to combat like a weapon power core or a shield power core while in the podcast it sounded more like general sector space stuff ie Transwarp, slipstream, sector space turnrate asf

Yes, but if you listen carefully Al Rivera does mention power to different sub systems as part of the functionality too. Which is in line with what Stahl said. Rivera came up with the idea and Stahl was just repeating his plan. The above podcast is the best info you'll get on the topic atm.
I really like the idea, as others have said it would mean more customisation and perhaps more control over what set bonuses you want to have. Could be some good combinations.
Like, for example, the deflector and the engines from the Assimilated Borg Set combined with the shields and the 'warp core' from the KHG/Adapted MACO set. So you'd have a ship with Tactical Readiness, Autonomous Regeneration Sequencer and faster travel in sector space.
Unless of course they change all the passives when warp cores are introduced, but you get the idea.
I personally feel we are not ready for warp cores in this game. We already have several in game equipment types that need to be fixed or differentiated from other items.
The top two examples that come to mind for me are:
1) Beam Arrays--These items work the same way as cannons except with less dmg and a wider arc. It would be nice if they changed into a precision weapon with different dmg modifiers and effects than cannons do.
2) Crew--They give some passive regen but they are still worthless. This has been in since launch and still hasn't been fixed.
I'd love to see the equipment and stats we have on our ships have a true purpose before we start adding on more slots.
It might be a mountain of work, but its one of the few ways they can keep folks buying ships. If each ship had a different warp core modifier or there were multiple types that could only slot into certain ships it would help differentiate the ships and make some more appealing to purchase.
"IF" PWE were smart, they would kill 2 birds with 1 stone. They would take a C-Store Galaxy and give it one of the best Warp Cores so that the ship again has purpose. But....at the same time allow the Warp Core to be swapped on any Cruiser. Players who don't want to fly a Galaxy will need to purchase a Galaxy (extra $$$ for PWE)...to transport it over to another Cruiser. And players who want to keep it on their current Galaxy, will have a useful ship again.
IF Pwe wanted to take this and run with it, they could fix Cruisers for better turning/DPS, Escorts for Sci/Heals, and Sci Ships with more toys, and the same across the board for the KDF.
Now there's the word that indicates you've already lost the argument.
If you think the best gear is going to be Z-store only, then you really need to educate yourself on Cryptic's method of releasing new gear. We will see the best warp cores come from reputation systems, not the Z-store. Oh, but the dilithium grind is too hard! Well no, not really. I have had both the current reputations to Tier 5 for the last two months and have gained all the gear I want from them by grinding dilithium only. No Zen purchased.
Given the way that sets seem to be creeping into the Lobi store, I would imagine that the best warp cores would go that way.
I subscribe to help keep the game going, but I don't want to subject myself to gambling, and while I have no problem with those who do, I'm pretty sure I'm not alone here. Not that other-faction ships really interest me. This might be how they intend on trying to pull people like myself in, come to think of it.
Nice to see Suricata's idea finally see some light, I always thought it was a good idea.
I'm really intrigued to see what they come up with, more so since they kinda shrugged of my idea for warpcores all those months back. They kinda incorporated my ship tier charts in the ship info windows ingame, would be nice if another of my ideas makes it in :-P
Edit: Wow, didn't realise I've been on these forums over 4 1/2 years!!!!

yeah I'm about just as old, good god it's been a while.

Unfortunately, I think the Warp Cores to be introduced will simply be items akin to deflectors and engines. Would be nice to see Suricata's designs get used.
Which is unfortunate, the concept was awesome and would have made for some great diversity in starship layouts.

No probs

Start from the 51 minute mark to listen about warp cores and armor slots.
