Who flies a ship for other reasons?

Not because it's OP in pvp, but because it was your favorite growing up, or you think it looks cool or it just plain fits you?

I tried tons of different ships, trying to find one that was just.."me". The Gal X, the excelsior, the nebulas, practically everything but the defiant and the odyssey.

I was rather overjoyed when the Steamrunner came out. Always liked the look of the thing, but didn't want to buy the Armitage for the Zephyr skin. Not only did I get the ship I wanted, but it turned out to a very tanky escort, which fit my engineers playstyle as well. Plus there's not a gazillion of the things flying around. Nothing I would hate more than rolling up in an Armitage next to 12 other ones outside ESD

So who flies the Nova because they liked how it looked when Kim flew it? Or who flies an assault cruiser because they loved the scene where it jumped in front of the Defiant in "First Contact"? Anyone still running a Miranda at VA level just because?

Sometimes I fly my Regent to annoy the people who complain about forward-swept nacelle pylons.

I run a setup on my Steamrunner that many would probably laugh at me for (Torp boat!), but it actually pulls some impressive DPS in ESTFs, it's fun, and I enjoy the hell out of it. What more could one ask?

Let me put it this way...my original headstart character in STO is a male human, with Asian facial features. He and his crew previously used the Wrath of Khan red or maroon jackets, and later upgraded to the Jupiter-style modern versions of the same.

He uses a particular C-store cruiser, and I'll probably be upgrading to the Fleet version of that ship soon, since it's just been released.

If you couldn't tell I'm talking about the Excelsior, I dunno what to say. I used to PvP regularly, and if I start again with a fleet upgrade, I know folks are gonna grumble about a Pay-to-Win ship. Honestly, though, I've never cared. It's just happy coincidence for me that the ship I like is actually pretty damn good.

I suspect it's that way for a lot of people.

I've always loved Ferengi's.. my main is an Engineer...

So the D'kora was something I just had to have... sadly I prefer Science ships for gameplay... Now if they made a Ferengi Science ship.. I'd be all over that...

Also, I have a character, a human science officer, in a Nova-class ship, with nothing better then Mk IV greens, that I intend to slowly but surely level all the way to 50 (using the same gear I have now) on elite difficulty, seeing as little combat as possible.

Character and away team do not use armor, kits or personal shields, and use nothing but tier I stun phasers and rifles.

Slow leveling, but so much more fun.

If it's ever going to be released, I am going to fly the Yaeger Class....

Untill then, I fly what I feel like... Sometimes that means Chimera... Other times Defiant... sometimes the odd... wait... nope... Never gonna touch that thing
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Eh, that was a rather lazy and mutated studio model kit-bash. The general shape was interesting, but they made no effort whatsoever. The Intrepid saucer is so blatant it is insulting to fans of classic designs like the Connie and Galaxy.

I fly my Sovy because it looks great to me, and it's one of my favorite fed ships (even though the design flaws still make me cringe). And when the Romulan faction finally comes out, you will see me living in nothing other than a D'deridex and/or Scimitar, just because the Romulan warbirds were always awesome to watch in the show, and the Scimitar, as terrible as it's turn rate will probably be, was just so badass in Nemesis, I couldn't say no even if I wanted to.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once. B)

Courtesy of Armada, of course. The most awesome-looking Romulan design I've ever seen.

Haha. I do the same in my Akira...ok, it's technically an Armitage, but I use the Akira look with some minor Thunderchild update of the torpedo pod.

I build it to the original intented specs, as a torpedo boat/carrier.
I got "accused" of a noobish build just yesterday in a C&H match because if that.

nice thread we got going here :)

I'm mainly a Voyager and TNG fan, I always liked the Galaxy class but when I saw Voyager I really liked it.

I've used an LRSV since my main hit Captain and I haven't changed my ship type since. I have the LRSV Retro now and I'm aiming for the Fleet LRSV.

I have to give Cryptic some credit for the design of the Bellerophon LRSV Refit... it is by far the sleekest looking ship and a lovely improvement on the Intrepid design. went hyper when I realised I could use the model on my LRSV Retro.

whether I'm hindering my builds true potential by being unable to simply change my ship, I don't really care, its a beautiful ship and with the Veteran skin It looks spectacular.

I've loved the Sovereign ever since First Contact...for me it is just the ship. I think about the combat scenes in the TNG movies, and they just send chills up my spine. The Regent then just takes what was awesome about the Sovereign and makes it more awesome.

I know its sub-optimal. What I do right now could be done better in a Tac Odyssey. I've also tried the Aventine, Defiant, Patrol Escort, Galaxy-X...but I ALWAYS end up back in my Regent. Maybe someday I'll get access to a Tier 5 shipyard and be able to upgrade it, but until then, its just gonna be the C-store Regent for me.

And yes, this is a nice thread we've got going here. :) I think a lot of us are trying to tap into what Star Trek means for us, even if it means we don't always have the best layout. I love the fact that all PvE content, even the elite stuff, is playable that way too (just hope that it stays that way, so I don't get left out in the cold).

This is a great thread. A gem amongst a lot of the other argument filled threads.

If I wasn't at work, I'd go further into why I have certain ships and what I have, but for now I will keep it short and sweet.

I loved the Excelsior. I am lucky enough that the Fleet Excelsior is a bad a$$ ship and it fits in more or less with my Military RP with my fleet. My main is a Tac and yes, efficiency wise I should probably be in an escort, but I don't care. I do PvP a lot and the ship rocks even there.

I own a Fleet Nova because I just LOVE the look and design of the ship, even if it is smaller than I usually like a ship to be.

    The list goes on :)

I grew up on TOS, so I always aim for that basic cruiser shape. But I prefer science ships. Until the Vesta came, I've not been able to capture the look I wanted (came close with a Luna/Sol hybrid). Now I love my Vesta/Rademaker hybrid. If only the nacelles would take the visual effects (e.g. MACO shield). RP wise, my ship in my story is a weapon development platform, and not a huge cruiser, so Vesta fits best too.

That said, I still fly a classic cruiser now and then for fun (classic meaning 2 nacelles that are higher than the saucer section).

I always hated the Galaxy so I opted to fly my Cheyenne way into admiral territory until I could afford a Sovvie (what a beauty) but still find it difficult to alter my playstyle to accomodate cruisers coming from an escort experience (my other 2 toons). I DO keep my second ship around just for tooling around and looking for stuff- Connie refit.

The Chel Gret is gonna be a godsend for my fed toon.

Back in the 90s I was part of an IRC Star Trek RP group. The first ship my character ever commanded was a Sovereign refit. So, naturally, once I get RA I took a Sovereign and named it after my first command.

I've since moved on to escorts, because I find the Army fun to fly, but I still have that old Sovereign at the top of my ship list. Next Featured Ep series, I'll probably fly her again.

I love DS9 and the Defiant, thankfully it is pretty powerful in STO. The only thing that could ever get me out of it would be an Andorian ship... no matter what stats. So thankfully I will be able to get one of those next month :D

I fly the fleet sabre because its cool. Sure, its inferior in every way that matters to the fleet patrol escort, but its small and cool looking. Basically a federation style bug ship (but not as good ofc).

i originally got the star cruiser simply because i liked the way it looked. i soon learned it was a poor performer. i tried everthing to make it a a good ship that could take and give damage, but it just never measured up. i no longer have that ship. needed to make room for a new ship the steamrunner.

i have strong dps ships like the mobius, armitage and steamrunner, but i still like playing around in my tholian web slinger and my oddys. i think the tholian ship looks absolutely great.

i tend to experiment a lot with the regent. no telling what set up i might have on the regent, but it is fun sometimes just to try something different. right now the regent is a beam boat loaded with newly acquired borg items and torps. i really like trying to time a good riker's manuever to do a lot of damage to multiple ships.....just for the heck of it.

Honestly all of my characters are more or less built towards a favorite ship of mine.

I have a "Romulan" captain who after much tinkering around will be ending up in a Akira torp boat/carrrier, with the Romulan set (she's getting back in touch with her heritage).

I have an Andorian named Blake, who flies a Tholian carrier named the Liberator. Bonus points if anyone knows what I'm ripping off.

I will have another Andorian with an all Andorian crew who will be flying that Andorian ship, if its anything like the one from Enterprise.

I never liked the look of the Galaxy-X, but the Ventrue-X just brings it together for me, so I'l have another character to fly that one. Again, probably won't be the best build, but I'll like it.

The Sovereign is a favorite too, and the Nebula's modern look in game is good, so I'll probably add more for those. And KDF side, I've always wanted a D7 end game, and I had a B'rell once, but traded it in for the KDF destroyer, but I'd want to fly one of those again.

So many ships, so little time.

For me it has got to be the defiant. Decloacking on top of a jem'hadar bug and destroying it in one cannon blast is what this ship is all about. Plus running rings around and blasting s**t out of large ships ala mirror defiant VS worf's negh'var in DS9

Took me ages to get it but now I can't fly anything else.

This may sound weird, but I'm more a fan of the TOS movies than TOS itself. As such, I love the things that came out of it, in particular:

    The Excelsior.

As such, to fly that very same ship (and now at fleet level) is truly amazing to me. I love it completely, without a doubt. I loved how it looked in the movies, the technology it had with a 'transwarp drive', and so on.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

This thread is pretty cool, Especially for people like me who constantly take a bashing for flying what i like into ESTF's...

For me, Gotta be Stargazer class with a Maco shield.

I Mean damn, thing looks like a muscle car. Seriously epic looking ship. Can hold it's own in STF's too, with a full beams (PreS7 MkXii Purples) actually does do some damage.

For my Fed I fly the mirror universe Star Cruiser because one it is like the sovereign but a alternate version which suits my character since he is also from another universe and also suits my play style as well.

As my KDF I have the B'rel something that always had me in awe from the first time we saw in in Star Trek III all the way into the undiscovered country when they had ine that could fire while cloaked pity that our bridge officers make ours decloak though
