Extreme Lag, Disconnects Constantly

EVER since the release of the Winter thing the game has been so laggy as to be unplayable at least 50% of the time.

Is anyone else experiencing this. It seems essentially like unlimited lag.

For example, right now I've been cruzing through a sector for 30 minutes in a straight line. Every few minutes, I jump back to the beginning. No assignments are visilbe, no mail, no exchange, although I see other players flying around.

What the heck is going on?

Hitting me too, and it seems zone specific sometimes, or action specific. I can see chat, but my movement is all "rewind"-y like you describe.. disconnects on lag-related deaths, other times it just sits there and I have to kill the entire client. Seems like specific pieces of the infrastructure are choking.

Yeah, it seems very Zone specific. EXACTLY what you describe.

I wonder if it has something to do with Comcast in Northern California. What is your internet provider and area?

Yeah it is totally Zone Specific.

If I transwarp out of a problem Zone, everything is fine. Until I hit another problem Zone. Of course, it take a few minutes to transwarp from a problem Zone because of the lag.

    Devs, what up?

    Comcast, in Northern California. >_<

I only just started playing again after a year away -- please tell me they usually get along?

Gosh, I'm in Central California with Comcast, and I've been getting a little more lag as of late. Maybe there's a connection here. . .

Still the Zone specific thing could not be explained by Comcast.

    I think its the servers.

They usually get along fine. I'm not sure they are not getting along now. I'm guess, again, that its the servers.

One last thing that probably is nothing, but...

My super lag started after a player from my fleet asked me to log in to their account to review their ship build.

You didn't log into someone else's account at their request did you (i.e. could this be some type of virus or trojan horse that is somehow activated by logging in to an account)?

    Nope.

Apparently I need to add more characters to be able to meet a minimum post length requirement. This should do...

Typing that usually gets around forum character limitations, because the hard return to type that line counts as a character.

Anyway....this probably belongs in PC/Tech issues, but...try running traceroutes and a nettest...at least it'll show if your connection is going bonkers and where any laggy spots may be en route to the server.

Also, because there may not be some people aware of this, make sure PMB is not running on your PC while you're playing. This is because PMB acts like a P2P client and if it's running and you happen to have the STO installer (obviously this would not apply to people who either played prior to F2P, have a boxed version, or DLed the game from steam) or any other game's installer which utilizes PMB, it's uploading in the background while you're playing and this can eat up bandwidth and cause lag/connection issues (this, I know from experience -.-)

I've been having a lot of lag, but just today, its even dropped me a few times. I'm Comcast in Fremont here.

I'm not having any unusual lag in any other online game I've been playing.

But I'll go long periods where nothing I do happens in game, then it will be OK, then it will just be rubber bandy.

I'm in the Bay Area and a Comcast user, and I have the exact same issue. Pinging the actual game servers (like 208.95.184.101) results in dropped packets about 20% of the time. Been like this for a couple of days now.

I was able to work around this by VPN'ing into my corporate network. Once under VPN the issue disappears. There is something wrong in the routing between NorCal and Cryptic servers, which is ironic considering Cryptic is based not too far from here.

Comcast and NorCal here. Same problem.

I poked around a bit. Routing to certain Cryptic servers from NorCal Comcast seem to be half-broken at the moment. Connecting to some game servers (and only *some* game servers, not all) result in dropped packets 10 to 20 percent of the time, leading to the "lag" effect we're seeing. Not sure if it's Comcast's fault or Cryptic's. I thought this would go away soon, but it hasn't for the last two days.

If you have access to a VPN, routing your Internet traffic through the VPN will temporarily bypass this problem.

I have this also , and i send it the trace report to tech support , send in my pc status .
They said try several optional suggestions , one of them being IP adress link on your pc .
Then i said it still did not work .
They said it was not there fault everything is ok from there end , it must be your fault !
Have not been playing for over 4 months now !
    I have a on going account ( Lifetime ) .
I have send in another request for help , it came back with same answers and feedback from them .
Which ultimately ended into a loop !
I gave up when they ask me to send the same report you posted below , and left it at that .
I knew it would yet be another one of those , it is not us , its you situation .

I keep my PC clean from all stuff government and private sector tries to put on my pc so they can monitor me or slow my pc down .
I trace the cookies so i make sure i am not excommunicating some cookies that are trust-able .

Yet this company is not telling me anything i need to know when it comes to a problem .
It is a shame i cannot play , i feel like i am being ousted for idk what ...

Trust me i tried every thing when it comes to software and compatibility with STO and my pc and the internet provider .

I live in Holland Europe and the only thing i came up with is maybe it is some sort of server providence block or bump which makes this happen everytime .
    That is my theory .

I bet a fleet credit ! No developer or support team or Moderator will read this post i placed and try to look into this issue .

I turned on the US Proxy in options at the launch menu. That seemed to solve the problem for me.

Makes sense, since all our traffic would then be routed to the proxy server, and then on to the destination... instead of through whatever problematic path is currently giving us fits.

Thanks for posting that, gonna go try it myself!

Lews, everyone has done that...its not much help, no offence. I am having the same issues after all the the test you have recommended above. No matter how many times you post the same advice over and over in other strings, its obviously not helping anyone at this juncture ;) It is clearly the majority of us in northern California and/or after the season 7 update.

The game simply has become unplayable for me, regardless of all the advice given :(

Well, I don't tell everyone to run a nettest/traceroute because I expect it to fix anything (I know that doesn't) but TS is gonna ask for it anyway. It's suggested to have a baseline for tech support/tech knowledgable members to have a look and see what the problem might be.

I know, having run several traces myself and corroborating this with traces posted by other players, that there's the probability of a bottleneck somewhere in the final hops of the trace. This may or may not be related to the problems with northern CA users but it's definitely an issue.

Tech support isn't an exact science. Everyone has to start somewhere, hence the advice given. It's worked in my own personal experiences with lag and such, in any case.

I want to add that I'm in California, and from two different locations, both using Comcast, i get severe lag and rubber banding. I can see what others are doing around me, but my input takes forever to happen, or I suddenly disconnect afterward a few minutes of unresponsive controls.

    It's driving me bonkers!

Having this problem too for a couple of days now. Super annoying! The game is unplayable.

I'm also in Nor Cal, using Comcast.

Whomever needs to fix this, get to work!

Now I connect from the Silicon Valley using Comcast, and was suffering from severe lag and server connection issues since last friday. As a temporary solution, I've found that setting the STO Client to use the US Proxy has greatly reduced the lag issue, enough so that once again STO is playable....

(Though the fact that using the US Proxy improves the issue shows that there is a serious peering issue between Comcast and Cogent Communications that needs to be addressed)

I am seeing the same issues here. Based in Northern California, Comcast XFinity ISP. I frequently encounter paralysis lag in both ground and sector space. My character or ship are paralyzed and unable to move, exit to sector space, beam up / down, interact with NPC's or doors, etc. I am also seeing the same issues on two separate PC's tied to the same router.

Yes, tried updating the router firmware, but haven't noticed any improvement.

The game now frequently crashes when shelling out to the Windows7 desk top -- it never did this before season7.

My hardware is more than enough to run the game:
-i7-2600k processor on an Asus P8P67M-Pro
    - 8 GIGS DDR3 PC2000
    -160gig SSD
    -2 TB secondary hard drive
    -EVGA GTX580 super-clocked video card

Using my ISP's connection testing utility, I have 4.25MB upload speed, 25.5MB download per sec.

    Please advise.

For all you other NorCal Comcast people, I have had success with using the US proxy setting in the launcher options as a workaround for now. I set it up yesterday and haven't had any appreciable lag/rubberbanding/crashing since.
