Atarti tokens? Are we in an arcade?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Can Atari actually force you to change the name of C-Store points or is it something you guys decided to do... because Atari Tokens sounds stupid. I feel like I'm shoving tokens into an arcade machine instead of buying in game stuff.

The name hardly matters seeing as how they function the same way.

Atari owns Cryptic. So, yes. If Atari wants Cryptic to make their website pink it happens.

Atari Tokens are the new name for Cryptic Points. The goal is to move all Cryptic and Atari games to be using this "new" currency ASAP.

You'll be able to use them here, in CO, or in any other Atari game (such as on Facebook) which has micro transactions.

As far as the idea of putting tokens into an arcade game... I think that's the image the marketing guys were trying to evoke. We're an old school company, and we're proud of that heritage.

    Thanks,

Basically, coupled with the ability to use them in non-Cryptic games, say, to play an arcade game. Or heck, maybe buy a T-shirt eventually.

It's just Atari-wide currency. So far, the exchange rate/prices haven't changed for STO.

Oh no. Not an arcade. Where they have video games.

    What will the neighbors think?

Great. You're getting more Atari on my Star Trek. If you start running Missile Command: The Movie ads in my load screens I'm afraid I'm going to have to take your teacup.

One thing I'm curious of; if we're Lifetime subscribers to Champions Online, and get 400 Atari Tokens per month for being "CO Gold Subscribers", can we use those tokens to buy STO items?

It hints that the Atari Tokens are universal, but I just wanted to be sure...

I don't get the complaint, its a subtle difference, I don't get why we can't just use cash but there we go.

I think the isn't to bad either, does remind you of an acarde which is kind of cool.

I'm not a Dev - but play both games, and the CO Devs have stated that the CO 'stipend' points will ONLY work with the CO store. (And LTS and Gold CO players will see the first Stipend on 2/4/11 - with all future stipends to be given on the 'anniversary' of when you started your paid sub each month. For LTS, we assume the day date of the month you purchased the CO LTS.)

This is confusing. I remember a dev post a month or two ago saying that these would be separate, that you wouldn't be able to use your CO subscription points in STO or vice-versa. People aren't fans of multiple currencies (maybe they're easily confused), but I think there should be some sort of hierarchy:
    • Atari points: usable in all Atari games (IE, not just Cryptic); bought from Atari
      • Cryptic points: usable in all Cryptic-developed games like CO & STO
        • CO points: specific to Champions Online; this would be from CO subscriptions/lifetime; only usable in CO
        • STO points: specific to STO; available from STO subs/lifetime; only usable in STO

Well, if you're changing the name you might want to mention to the art team to change the new Ship and Close Tailors in Tribble to change it to AP from CP.

Perhaps instead of AP, just use the Atari Symbol in-game?

True, that was a few months ago, before this whole integration thing came up. I really wonder if they'd use tech just to keep stipend points in a specific game.

Basically, Atari points are what you pay for directly. CO and STO points are given to you as part of your stipend. So while the Atari points are universal (to even to Atari Facebook games) the STO and CO points only work in their respective games.

    Funny....

They had to seperate what they were giving away as a stipend with what you buy. I think it makes sense. They didn't want lifers in CO racking up Cryptic Points and using them in STO.

Old School? Cryptic isn't that old. Or are you refering to Atari.

Anyway Are these points transferable between CO and STO now? I might be tempted to reup to CO for a month to check things out if the points can be used over here.

Would that really break them? They're still keeping the business within Cryptic, although I can understand if they want to be sure which game sells better. But even that desire would be better handled by having 1 special currency across all games.

btw. did anyone compare what 500 C-Points and 500 Atari Tokens do cost in comparison?

just curious if it is an actual 1:1 conversion or if we are getting merged into an existing system that has diffrent values?

i guess turning it back into $ and € would make to much sense....
