Yep, I got this. Got to be a bit of a pain in the past. It doesn't seem to like post processing effects very much, switch those off and then back on again though and i didn't have too many problems, except the odd graphics twitch here and there
I looked at that card, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Card. I ended up going with the GTS450 and I love it. I run everything maxed out.
WOOT!!! thx for the feedback...I had Nvidia run a check on my comp and said it would be NO problem running it...just wanted to check and see if it was any good.

Yeah, but Cryptic's being paid to support nVidia [and Intel...] isn't it?
Wouldn't normally complain, but given the superiority of the 5xxx series of ATI/AMD cards it's disappointing and suspicious how many graphical glitches and other issues remain in STO for them.

Most of that isn't Cryptics fault iin that if there's ONE thing ATI gets a failing grade for, it's driver support and a willingness to WORK with software application makers to resove such hardare and driver cinflicts. ATI has never been good with the latter (hell, in the 'old days' you were lucky to even SEE a newer driver for an ATI graphics card after the initial release - sometime in two years there would be ONE new driver.)
So, yes. these days while it's true ATI has increased their driver updates a bit, they still don't seem to be as willing to work with app developers to address driver issues in the manner te Nvidia folks do - which is why nI still avoid ATI cards to this day regardless of the 'better hrdware'. If the hardware won't work well with what I want to use it for, nd the company isn't all that willing to work with developers, it's not much good to me. (YMMV)
I run dual 9600 GT cards, and I love 'em. I bought them a couple years ago when I upgraded my machine for Fallout 3, and they still work great (with STO and other games as well). I can run STO with pretty much everything on high (maybe not totally maxed out, but pretty darn close), so I would imagine that a 9800 GT would be a good card to get.
(Also, although I use 2 cards, I'm not currently running them in SLi because I use them to run 3 different monitors. If I needed to, I would run them in SLi, but I haven't had to yet, but, then again, I don't play many computer games other than STO and FO3 and some other 'older' titles, so YMMV. )
I have the 9800 GT OC with the built in overclocking. Only problem is they glitched out the overclock so you have to dial it down a bit with rivatuner but otherwise I can run everything maxed with no problems. Havent found a game yet that I can't run maxed.
I have this card on my computer but STO runs very slowly when the graphics settings aren't on the second lowest slider section. Any more than that, it gets all choppy.
It's funny that when I first started playing, everything ran very smoothly even having the graphics settings maxed out but once I ran a couple of missions, Starbase 24 and New Romulus, it started having problems.

Looks great.
We run these in the office. They're good cards.
Thanks,

although a dual core 2.5 or higher cpu and 4gb of ram helps

Don't know what to do about it. Please help.
